Rean steps in front of the blade, takes the hit meant for someone else, and dies before he can even wonder why he bothered.

All his life, there’s been a hollow place where other people keep their fears, their wants, their reasons. Food tasted like cardboard, victories felt like paperwork, and even kindness was something he did the way you might close a door that’s swinging in the wind—automatically, without thinking. There’s a flaw coiled deep in his soul, a quiet defect that keeps him from truly caring.

So when they call his final act “heroic,” it doesn’t sit right. There was no burning resolve, no last-second surge of courage. Just a body moving on habit—and then the cold.

That should have been the end. Instead, Rean opens his eyes to a presence that smells of dried flowers and winter air: Death, amused and oddly curious, leaning over the mess that is his soul. Reincarnation, Death explains, isn’t supposed to work on someone like him. Which makes Rean a problem—and Death has always had a soft spot for interesting problems.

Given a new life under the quiet, watchful gaze of the one who collects all endings, Rean is pushed into a world that expects him to choose, to want, to fight. For once, drifting along isn’t enough. If he can’t learn what it means to care—really care—then every sacrifice he makes, in this life and the next, will be nothing more than an empty reflex.

And Death is tired of empty endings.
