Last Dancer of the Egyptian Sky

Nakht’s world is no larger than the polished stone of the palace floors and the circle of Meryt’s arms.

They dance for Pharaoh until their feet blister, bodies gilded and perfumed, nothing more than beautiful possessions—but together they steal small freedoms: a shared fig behind a curtain, a whispered joke during a procession, the slow, secret choreography of two men who have decided that love can exist even in a gilded cage.

Then a night of steel and shouting tears that fragile life apart. A failed coup, a single wrong turn in a darkened corridor, and Meryt is gone—his blood washed from the tiles before dawn, as if he were only another servant’s mistake.

Nakht offers his own life up in answer, kneeling beneath the open sky and begging the gods to take him too. They listen. But rather than death, the great male gods set him a trial: if his devotion is as pure as he claims, he must walk through every pleasure, every temptation they can conjure—riches, power, bodies, the chance to stop being a slave—and turn from all of it, eyes fixed only on the memory of Meryt.

If he succeeds, they will let him stand beside his beloved again, whether in Pharaoh’s shadow or in the bright fields of the afterlife. If he fails, Meryt is lost to him forever, and Nakht will know that the one thing he thought unbreakable—his love—can be bought, bent, or worn thin under the blazing Egyptian sky.
