He should have opened his eyes in a new life, in a new body, with all the usual transmigrator perks. Instead, he drifts—disembodied, weightless, a stubborn scrap of consciousness snagged on a foreign continent’s sky. Years blur, kingdoms rise and rot away beneath him, languages twist into shapes he no longer recognizes. Wind howls through mountains that forget his name. Forests grow, burn, and grow again.

A hundred thousand years of being no more than a watching ghost would break most people. Gawain counts constellations, memorizes the changing coastlines, listens to prayers never meant for him. Somewhere in all that emptiness, the idea takes root: to truly arrive in this world, he needs flesh, breath, a heartbeat that is his.
