The Choice

We promised each other everything in the dark, not under an altar.

No lace, no bouquet. Just a bare kitchen table between us, the clock ticking too loud, Stefan’s hand covering mine as if that alone could keep the world out. We didn’t trade rings; we traded secrets. We vowed to put us above the blood and money that had raised us, to stand shoulder to shoulder against the quiet rot in both our families.

For a while, that was enough. We learned each other’s breathing in the night, shared coffee from the same chipped mug in the morning, pretended that love could be a wall high enough to block out history.

Then the past stopped knocking and simply forced the door.

Old debts arrive with new faces. The men who once owned Stefan’s loyalty want it back. The people who shaped my childhood are suddenly interested in my future. Every message he doesn’t answer, every call I silence, stretches the space between us a little wider.

Stefan can’t keep the life he built before me and still walk beside me into what comes next. I can’t bear to watch him sacrifice the last pieces of himself he hasn’t already given away. Yet the one decision that could save us is the one neither of us can make without destroying the other.

Time is narrowing around us, hard and sharp. Whatever we choose now won’t just rewrite our marriage; it will decide whose sins we carry, and whose bodies we step over, to make it out alive.
