The Secret

I slip the ring onto my finger and hear myself promise to love, to honor, to obey.

It’s a script, a performance, a bargain struck on a quiet afternoon long before the flowers and the champagne. Stefan needs a wife on paper; I need what he can give me. We both agree this marriage is a transaction, nothing more.

Then the doors close, the guests go home, and I learn how literal obedience can become.
