The Wrong Husband

The first time the motorcycle dies, he’s alone on a sunburned highway with nothing but heat shimmer and the taste of freedom in his mouth.

It was supposed to be a clean escape. When the Westwoods started murmuring about arranged introductions, suitable brides, and the next generation of the dynasty, he answered with a set of keys and a full tank of gas. No itinerary. No ring. Just wind.

Then the engine coughs its last outside a forgotten desert town, and he limps into a small, cluttered garage that smells like oil, coffee, and dust. That’s where he meets her.

The mechanic with silver-gray eyes doesn’t care about his last name. She wipes her hands on an old rag, names a price, and treats him like any other stranded stranger. She belongs to this place of faded storefronts and hand-painted signs, to a family shop held together by stubbornness and late nights. He belongs to boardrooms, legacy plans, and a future drafted before he could vote.

He tells himself it’s temporary—helping her patch up the shop, sharing greasy takeout on the hood of his dead bike, learning the rhythms of a town where people wave at every passing truck. But his hands start to remember work that isn’t on a laptop. His chest starts to ache when he thinks about moving on.

Back home, a Westwood doesn’t go off-script. Contracts are waiting. So is the life chosen for him.

Out here, there’s a woman who won’t ask him to stay—and a version of himself who can’t bear to leave. To love her, he’ll have to become the wrong husband in his family’s story, and let the future he was born for burn in the rearview mirror.
