They take his house at noon.

By evening, Lin Mu is standing at the edge of town with everything he owns tied in a single rag, watching the smoke from other people’s dinners curl into the sky. One bad choice in the fields during harvest, one mistake everyone can point to, and the boy who used to run errands for half the market is suddenly someone no one will meet eyes with.

There’s nowhere for him to go except the scrubby woods beyond the last fence—the place he used to vanish to as a child when chores got too heavy and grown-ups too loud. The old tree is still there, bark rough under his fingers, roots like sleeping animals in the dirt. But when his hand slips into the hollow where he once hid toy swords and stolen fruit, his fingers close around cold metal.

A ring. Dull, pitted, its surface eaten by rust, wedged so deep into the heartwood it might as well have grown there.

The first time Lin Mu pulls it free, the world shudders. Air thickens. The wind seems to carry whispers in a language he has never learned but somehow almost understands. What looks worthless is anything but, and the boy the town threw away finds himself pressed up against secrets that do not care about village borders, or harvests, or the comfort of small lives.

To put the ring on is to step onto a road that runs far beyond the outskirts—and once his foot is on it, there’s no path back to the boy who walked into the trees with nothing but a bundle and his shame.
