Synopsis

They haul Calliope Hart out of her father’s house at dawn, bare feet leaving dusty prints on the porch he used to bleed on. Her father is dead, the town is hungry for someone to blame, and the strange Hart girl—with her quiet stare and bad-luck aura—is the easiest answer.

She doesn’t argue. Steel bars and fluorescent lights are cleaner than the Hart family kitchen. A cell is still a cage, but at least it doesn’t call her names in her father’s voice.

Only after she’s locked away do people notice the way things begin to rot.

The corn yellows, then blackens. Wells taste metallic, like old pennies on the tongue. Storefronts go dark, one by one, as if some unseen hand is pinching out the town’s last good candles. The Hart women were always whispered about—hexed, ruined, wrong. But it takes Calliope’s absence for anyone to understand the truth:

she was the thing holding everything together.

Years later, when the gates finally open, she steps back over the county line as a woman who has learned exactly what she is. The odd child with haunted eyes has grown into something sharper, coiled and deliberate, with power that sits heavy in her palms like wet clay ready to be shaped—or broken.

The town that cast her out is shriveled and desperate now, its whitewashed porches peeling, its people still pretending they’re innocent.

Calliope Hart has stopped pretending anything.

They wanted a curse to point at. Wrangled gives them one who walks, breathes, remembers every slight—and is done being the thing that suffers so everyone else can thrive.
