Chapter 18
The story starts in Chapter 18 of "In Their Hearts": âIâve never gotten more than one.â I blurt out, attempting to make sense of this.... Donât miss it!
âIâve never gotten more than one.â I blurt out, attempting to make sense of this. But I look. Itâs an exact match, address and all. What the heck? Did she send two, just to make sure I didnât miss it?
âWhat do you mean? Youâre acting like this isnât new, Jo.â Clay is now staring me down. Iâm feeling every inch of his height next to me. Not that I think he would ever hurt me. Grantâs looking at me just as confused as I feel.
âWell⌠not entirelyâŚâ Fuck. What do I tell him? Iâm terrible at lying. I canât tell them about my dead fiancĂŠ or his angry mother. Iâve never told anyone.
âSpit it out. I canât help you if I donât know whatâs going on.â
âWe canât help you.â Grant corrects him.
Double shit.
Do I even want their help? If she starts sending more letters, I donât know how much more I can take. I also donât think Clay is going to drop this. He seems⌠invested for whatever reason.
âI get one every year, but just one. I swear. Thatâs the weird part.â
âThatâs the weird part? Jesus Jo. This isnât normal at all. Nothing about this is okay.â
âLet me read it.â
He hesitates for a second, but he decides I need to read it.
Jolee,
I wasnât planning to write this letter, but I canât hold it in anymore.
I knew he didnât love you. He loved me. Only me.
We had a life planned, and you werenât in it.
I was his real loveâdoesnât leave this kind of wreckage behind.
This isnât a conversation. Not up for debate. Itâs simply something I felt you should know, since you still seem to occupy space in a story that is no longer yours to tell.
Itâs time I made my own peace. Itâs also time to help you understand how you destroyed my family and me.
SJ
Sheâs right. I donât understand⌠any of this. Something more has snapped in her, and Iâm not sticking around to dwell on it. She already consumes enough of my life.
âClay, Iâm fine. Theyâre just letters. Nothing more.â
I donât know whatâs gotten into Sherry, but whatever. If it makes her feel marginally better, then so be it. I might need to stop opening them, though. My walls arenât built for this.
Both men look concerned, but I do what I do best. Ignore it. Attempt to go about my life. And right now, we have a wedding to get to.
âWe should get going. I donât want to be late.â
I grab Starâs gift and head out the door.
They can follow or not.
