The King's Pawn

Flames were supposed to finish me. One moment I was in a lecture hall; the next, smoke, screaming, fire devouring the only life I’d ever planned for myself.

I didn’t die.

Sasha Sokolov pulled me out.

He’s the name whispered in back rooms and into burner phones. Bratva royalty wrapped in a tailored suit, knuckles scarred, eyes that never really warm. The man my father crossed. The man my father feared enough to trade his daughter instead of his own life.

Now I wake up in Sasha’s house, where the walls are thick, the windows locked, and nothing happens without his say-so. There’s always someone in the hallway. Always a camera red-dotted in the corner. He tells me I’m safe here.

Safe. As if safety feels like his hand at the small of my back, guiding me whether I want to move or not. As if safety sounds like my name in his low, unhurried Russian, like he’s tasting it before he lets it go.

To him, I’m not a guest. Not a hostage either. I’m a settled score, breathing and furious and still stupid enough to push back.

Every time I do, he steps closer. A shadow at my door, a touch that lingers a fraction too long, a gaze that strips away my defiance and shows me something I don’t want to see in myself: that dangerous, aching pull toward the man who owns my freedom.

The worst part isn’t the cage he’s built around me—it’s the moment I realize some part of me is curling up inside it, choosing it, learning the shape of his darkness. And when the truth finally comes out about the price paid for my life, there won’t be any clean escape—only the choice to run and be hunted… or stay and become the king’s willing pawn.
