Tears welling in my eyes, I fall to my knees and throw my arms around him. “You made it. How—?”

Lifting both of us to our feet, Trent says, “I had help.” He tilts his head toward the street.

I was so focused on Trent, that I didn’t notice Roberta, Levi, Keaton, and Jonah standing in the driveway. I hadn’t even thought about Trent being stranded in the same city where they live. Only that he was stranded halfway across the country. Those four really are the best friends I ever made in college. Haven’t seen them in person since I graduated and Trent got drafted. I’ve missed them so much.

“I tracked them down and we took shifts driving through the night. No way I was going to miss my baby’s birthday.”

I cup my hand over my mouth, holding back a sob.

Trent peels it away and presses a gentle kiss on my lips.

“I know it’s not the weekend getaway or backyard carnival you’re used to…” Trent whispers, pressing his forehead to mine when our lips part.

Looking between him and our friends coming up the stone path to join us, I smile, so full of joy for us all to be together again. “Best birthday ever.”
