Chapter 50 of "When He Lies" opens presenting key developments: Ryan laughed.Jezebel didnât.âOh, come on.â Another rough laugh escaped him. âItâs me.ââYes, and I saw... Read on!
Ryan laughed.
Jezebel didnât.
âOh, come on.â Another rough laugh escaped him. âItâs me.â
âYes, and I saw the way you looked at her. Be careful. Even spies can get their hearts broken.â
He had the feeling she was speaking from personal experience. But she didnât need to worry about him. âNo worries. My heart isnât on the line.â
She didnât reply. Jezebel took the eggâsheâd tucked it into her pocketâand she climbed onto the elevator with her guards. A few moments later, the elevator doors closed, and she vanished from sight.
His heart was not on the line. Not. One hundred percent not.
He opened the door to the suite.
Harry rushed toward him. âI, uh, couldnât stop her!â
Fuck. âWhat did she do?â He closed the door. Secured it. Heâd left them for minutes. Minutes. And Simone should have been sleeping during that time. OnlyâŚ
She strolled from the narrow hallway, looking extremely bright-eyed and awake. âCalm yourself. I was starving. I figured you had to be starving, too, so I ordered room service.â Simone slanted a glance toward Harry. âSomeone nearly fainted. Though why he fussed so much, I have no idea. Room service is not a capital offense.â
Ryan squeezed his eyes shut. âYou couldnât stop her from ordering food? You couldnât stop her from making a phone call?â What if the call hadnât been to room service? What if sheâd called someone else and leaked their location?
âWell, I, um, didnât want to hurt herâŚâ
Ryanâs eyes flew open. âDamn straight you didnât want to hurt her. You put your hands on her, you hurt her, and weâll have a major fucking problem.â
Silence.
Okay, heâd probably been way too aggressive with all of that.
His breath blew out. Slowly. âWeâre not eating in here. Simone and I are going downstairs to the hotelâs restaurant.â
âWe are?â Surprise flashed on her face. âButâŚthe hitâŚâ
âThe goal isnât to stay hidden. The goal is to bring the bad guys out into the open. Weâll have eyes on us at the restaurant.â Jezebel had already told him that agents would be located throughout the hotel and restaurant. Just not the agents he knew and trusted well.
âCancel the order,â Ryan told her.
She stared at him a beat longer, then spun on her heel and marched back down the hallway to the bedroom.
âHow do you knowâŚâ Harryâs low voice. âHow do you know that she isnât calling some of those associates she mentioned? She could be plotting her escape.â
âSheâs definitely plotting an escape.â Heâd be a fool to think otherwise. âItâs just not going to happen. I wonât let her go.â His gaze had lingered on the hallway as he watched Simone vanish, but now he glanced at Harry. âDonât ever hurt her.â
Harry swallowed. âUnderstood. I-I wouldnât.â Then he grimaced. âUnless I had no choice. UnlessâŚunless she is coming at me with a weapon and I had to stop herâŚâ
Ryan moved to stand toe to toe with Harry. âCan I trust you?â
âIâm MI6!â His cheeks flushed. And his voice cracked.
âThatâs not a yes and thatâs not a no.â He stared into Harryâs eyes. âLet me make certain that I am perfectly clear. Simone doesnât get hurt.â
âTh-thatâsâŚitâs not something I can promise. Itâs not something you can promise!â Fast words. âIf she comes at you with a knife or a gunâŚyouâll fight back, too. Unless youâre going to vow that you wonât ever hurt her, either? What are you going to do, stand there while the woman kills you?â Harry asked Ryan.
âAhem.â Simoneâs overly loud throat clearing.
Ryan had already heard the tread of her returning steps. The little tap of her heels.
