Chapter 24
Chapter 24 of "The Mafia's Queen" commences with: Hayes smiles next to me, and Doyleâs grin turns hard.Tapping my desk with thick leather... Donât miss the next part!
Hayes smiles next to me, and Doyleâs grin turns hard.
Tapping my desk with thick leather gloves, he winks. âYou know what, Ace? I like you.â He reclines in the seat, hands clasped under his chin as his stare burrows under my skin. âTough. Beautiful.â My skin crawls. âYou remind me a lot of your fatherâruthless and calculating. Rules and traditions donât matter to you. You do what you want.â
Those familiar eyes land on Hayes, and he smiles. My shoulders hunchâDoyle is as charming as the devil and just as inconspicuous. I know a strike is coming.
âTake what you did here. The first captain to host the Games in what, twenty, twenty-five years? And you choose the enemyâs son. A bold move.â
âBest man won,â Hayes growls. White knuckles flex. Frankly, Iâm impressed with his restraint.
âRight. Remind me of who you were, again?â He picks a piece of lint off his jacket. âBruno Seniorâs whipping boy?â
Hayes surges forward, only held back by my quiet hand in the air. These idiots donât know what theyâre starting by ticking offmy second. What Iâll do if they so much asglanceat my friend wrong.
Iâm tempted to let him goâsee him pull the Board member apart. Itâd certainly make me smile.
Doyle whistles. âCute. What about your dog?â His gaze falls on Killian. The Reaper leans there, curling the knife over his knucklesâa party trickâand ignores him. âIs he leash-trained too?â
âPet him and find out.â
Killian chuckles, his laugh like smoke in the airâheavy and smothering. Doyle frowns, directing his attention back to me.
I grin, and I donât care how psychotic it looks. âIs there a point to all of this?â
âJust making observations,â he says, shrugging. âAbout how nontraditional you are. You keep the enemyâs bastard as a friend, and a sociopath as a contract killer on payroll.â
âIâm actually a psychotic killer.â Killian winks. âI plan out my kills. Not very impulsive. Unlike our captain.â
Hayes snorts.
Doyle continues, unamused. âNo one has the balls to act the way you do, spitting in the face of things that have kept your organization going for decades.â
âGood thing I donât have a pair of balls to get in the way.â
He laughs loudly, slapping his knee. My hand finds my knife on my hip, and I watch him closely. âSee? Youâre different. Youâre not like other women.â
Ironic. If he knew anything about women, heâd understand weâre more alike than not. If allowed to express our rage, weâd set the entire world on fire with our fury and dance in the ashes that blow away. Hell, I know I would.
âMost women care about money, gems, or status. Not you. Youâre into different things.â
âLike pretty knives and spilling the blood of idiotic men who waste my time.â My grin turns wicked. âGet to the fuckingpoint, Doyle.â
The asshole smirks, gesturing for Murray to give me something. Out of his messenger bag, he pulls a thick white contract and tosses it onto my desk. âIâm sure you remember this.â
Of course, I do. I remember those wordsâI remember everything my father tried to do to my siblings. All the contracts, the underhanded deals, and the venomous words are imprinted into my mind like a fucking sick lullaby that wonât rest.
Leaning back in my chair, I lift my chin. âEnlightenme.â
âItâs the decree your father gave to Sloane.â He points to her name as if to prove a point. âIt says here, on the day of her twenty-first birthday, she was to become my wife.Mine. And yet, your father dies, and you conveniently ignore his last wish.â He shakes his head. âUnbecoming of a captain.â
His eyes glint with malice. âHow did you become the captain, anyway, Ace? Last time I checked, women canât hold this role.â
I sit there, silently fuming. It takes every ounce of willpower not to slash his throat and toss him out into the snow. Heâd make a pretty frozen statue for the birds to shit on.
âAnd last time I checked,â I begin, words soft, though no less murderous, âmy father was dead. I donât honor dead menâs requests.â
âIt wasnât a request!â he shouts, slamming his fist onto the desk. My pens rattle, my computer shakes, and my heart lurches. Thereâs a brief moment where my body locks down at the sudden noise, and a switch flips. I canât react fast enoughâcanât draw my knife and fight back.
Iâm there againâstuck with Michael and his disgusting punishments. Cigar smoke chokes me, and I canât see past his horrible grin.
