Chapter One
Five Years Ago
Silence had weight.
It pressed against his ears, thick and constant, broken only by the drip of water somewhere behind him and the uneven rasp of his own breath.Nikolai Petrov measured time by those sounds now.By pain.By how long it took for the cold to creep back into his bones after the heat of blood loss faded.
Theyâd stopped asking questions weeks ago.
That was how he knew heâd won something.
The room was concrete.Always concrete. No windows. One exposed bulb swinging slightly from the ceiling, casting shadows that made the men bigger than they were.Heâd mapped the space with his body long before his eyes had adjustedâfour steps to the wall, two to the drain, chains bolted low so he couldnât stand fully upright.
They wanted him small.
They wanted him loud.
He gave them neither.
A fist slammed into his ribs without warning.Nikolai âKolâ Petrov absorbed it on instinct, curling just enough to protect what little still worked.Something cracked this timeâsharp, finalâbut he didnât make a sound.Didnât even suck in air too fast.
That was what infuriated them most.
âYou will speak,â one of them snarled in Russian, close enough now that Nikolai could smell cigarettes and cheap cologne.âYou were trained to observe. To record. To remember. We know what you know.â
Nikolai lifted his eyes slowly.
He said nothing.
The man hit him again.Harder.Methodical.They had learned that rage wasted energy. This was punishment, not interrogation.A reminder of ownership.
Ownership.
The irony would have made him laugh once.
He had been loyal.God, he had been loyal.
He had served under the flag, believed in the language of protection and necessity, trusted that the lines he crossed were sanctioned because they mattered.Surveillance, extraction, quiet removalsâalways justified as protecting Russia from threats that lived in shadows.
Until he discovered the truth.
The money trails. The altered manifests. The men who disappeared not because they were enemiesâbut because they were inconvenient.Civilians rerouted, erased, sold. Not enemies of the state.Inventory.
Heâd filed his report through the proper channels.
Within forty-eight hours, he was no longer a soldier.
Within seventy-two, he was in the hands of the Bratya.
That had been months ago.
Theyâd wanted names.Locations.Protocols.How to bypass systems heâd built.Which officers could be bought.Which couldnât.
Kol stopped speaking on day three.
Not because of fear.
Because silence was the only thing they couldnât take from him.
