Chapter 7
Chapter 7 of "His Silent Vow" opens revealing: Not because he was louder, or more overtly cruel. But because he lingered. He came less often,... Keep going!
Not because he was louder, or more overtly cruel. But because he lingered.
He came less often, but when he did, the room seemed to contract around him, the air thickening as if bracing. He spoke to her as if they were having a private conversation, his voice low and patient. He used her name too frequently, rolling it as if he had a right to it.
âEliza, youâre not like the rest,â he told her once.âYou understand systems.Order.Youâll see why this was necessary.â
She learned that he was not her buyerânot directlyâbut that he answered to him.Adjusted routines and punishments based on instructions received elsewhere. When she was hurt, it was because someone wanted her softened. When she was given food, it was because someone wanted her functional.
Someone was waiting for her.
The knowledge lodged heavy in her stomach, a constant presence she couldnât outrun.
On the seventeenth day, they brought her a laptop.
It was old.Scrubbed.Locked down. But it was a tool, and they knew she would use it.
âFix this,â they told her, sliding a file across the table.
She did.
Slowly.Carefully.
She corrected errors that would pass unnoticed.Made changes subtle enough to look organic. As she worked, she memorized everythingâthe account numbers, the routing paths, the inconsistencies that pointed to coercion instead of collaboration.
She understood then what they were doing.
They werenât laundering money.
They were laundering people.
On the twenty-first day, the man who lingered leaned close, breath warm against her ear.âHeâs asking about you,â he said softly.âWants to know when youâll be ready.â
Eliza kept her eyes on the screen.
Her hands did not shake.
Inside, something hard and cold settled into place.
She was not ready.
She was not finished.
If someone believed they owned herâif someone thought a payment had erased her choicesâthen she would survive long enough to make that belief very, very expensive.
Three weeks was a long time to disappear.
But she was still here.
And she was watching.
