As Auren ends the call, he trembles with rage.âFuck this! I didnât provoke the damn Troupe! I even paid those fucking Elders millions of Jenny! These greedy bastards will pay for this!â
He storms over to the crew. âGet me ropes. Sleeping pills. Anything useful. We need to make absolutely sure our hostage doesnât escape! If she dies or runs off, everything weâve fought for is gone!â
âUnderstood, Vice-leader!â
âRight away!â
âWeâll handle it!â
Moments later, the crew returns with thick ropes and restraints. They tie Pakunodaâs arms, legs, and torso securely, taking no chances.
âSheâs tied up tight, Vice-leader. And weâll keep at least two people watching her at all times,â one of the crew members informs him.
âGood⌠she needs to stay alive and unharmed. But if she tries to escape, youâre allowed to do whatever it takes to stop her!â Auren replies firmly.
He draws Eternity and takes a seat on a bench directly across from her, blade aimed straight at her unconscious body.
Hours pass.
Eventually, Pakunodaâs body begins to move. She groans softly in pain, blinking as her eyes open. She looks around, disoriented.
Auren doesnât say a word. He watches her in silence.
â...Monster. No wonder the Elders sent us to interrogate you,â she mutters.
He remains quiet, eyes fixed on her.
âJack⌠is he dead?â she asks after a moment.
Auren shrugs. âDo you honestly blame me for that?â
Pakunoda shakes her head slowly. âNo⌠itâd be hypocritical. He acted recklessly, against our orders. We were never supposed to engage in combat. So⌠why am I still alive? I joined the attack too.â
âLucky for you, your group has something I want,â Auren replies coolly.
He holds up her phone. âNow. Tell me the code to unlock it.â
â7262,â she says without resistance.
Auren types it in and dials Nobunaga.
âThis is Nobunaga speaking,â the voice answers sharply.
âYour member just woke up. Iâm holding the phone in front of her. You can talk freelyâbut Iâm listening in. If you try to trick me, donât bother,â Auren warns him.
He holds the phone close to her face, careful not to touch her.
I canât touch her. She might activate her Hatsu and read my thoughts!
âPakunoda⌠are you alright? Whatâs your condition?â he hears Nobunaga ask.
âIâm okay⌠I was injured, but the wounds were treated. Sloppily, but theyâre no longer bleeding. Iâm tied up, but otherwise in good condition.â She pauses briefly, then adds, âItâs our own fault. If you need to abandon me, so be it.â
âHey!â Auren snaps at her.
âDonât worry! We wonât abandon her,â Nobunaga cuts in quickly.
In the background, Auren catches a muffled voiceâsomeone speaking faintly.
âOkay⌠Pakunoda. Tell me what happened,â Nobunaga asks next.
âWe approached the target after the match. During the conversation, the target insulted Jack, who lost control of his emotions and attacked with his usual technique,â she says quietly. âI joined in.â
âThatâs enough,â Auren interjects. âNow I want to speak with your hostages.â
ââŚFair enough,â Nobunaga replies. âHere. Take the phone.â
âAuren? You managed to kill a Troupe member and capture another? Hahaha, Iâm so proud of you!â he hears a familiar voice speaking in joy.
âBuno⌠whatâs your status? Are you both okay?â Auren asks, tension visible in his face.
âNot exactly. I lost a couple fingers, and Bunu lost an eye. But weâll live,â Buno says, his voice steady.
â...Did anything happen after the fight?â Auren demands, his fists clenched tightly.
âNo. All the damage happened during the battle. Weâre getting treated now,â Buno assures him.
âLet me speak to Bunu,â Auren says.
âWeâre fine, Auren,â Bunuâs voice replies. âThese wounds are nothing serious.â
They know I can heal them when I get the chance. Good⌠Iâll accept that.
Nobunagaâs voice returns on the line. âAre you satisfied?â
âIf they get tortured or further injured, you wonât like my reaction,â Auren says, his voice cold as ice.
âThey wonâtâŚâ Nobunaga replies.
âIf theyâre under the influence of Nen in any way, expect the same response. Donât test me. We have more ways than you can imagine to find out!â Auren shouts, his tone sharp and rising.
âThereâs no need to worry,â Nobunaga answers calmly.
âWeâll stay in contact,â Auren says, before ending the call.
Turning away from Pakunoda, Auren quickly types a message, documenting everything saidâby the Troupe, Buno, Bunu, and himself. He also notes that it seems like someone else may be issuing commands to Nobunaga.
The long journey toward Yorknew begins. Auren spends nearly all his time training, never leaving Pakunodaâs side. Eternity is always conjured, always ready, his vigilance unbroken. He trains hardâbut never to exhaustion, always stopping short of total fatigue. Every day, he personally escorts Pakunoda to the toilet, allowing her to wash, blade drawn and sharp, giving her no opportunity for tricks.
The rest of the crew all know Nen. They arenât masters, but theyâre more than enough to keep her from escaping.
âWhy are you training this hard?â Pakunoda asks one day, watching him curiously.
Auren sneers. âHard? This is just the bare minimum. If I didnât have to worry about you escaping, Iâd show you what real training looks like.â
âThat didnât answer my question,â she replies plainly.
âStrength is everything,â Auren says. âWithout strength, weâre all prisonersâtrapped by limits, by fear. But with enough strength⌠Iâll be truly free. No one will be able to stop me.â
He pauses, then adds, âSince Iâve answered your question⌠how about you answer one of mine? Why do you let yourself be used by those greedy Elders? I thought the Phantom Troupe stood for something more. Something free. Youâre just lackeys now. Henchmen for corrupt old men. I have to say, I am truly looking down on you, after that little stunt.â
ââŚWeâre not henchmen. And we donât follow orders from the Elders,â Pakunoda answers, eyes fixed on him. âWe help them now and then, thatâs all. As for this situation⌠someone took interest in you. The Eldersâ request was just a bonus.â
ââSomeone,â huh? Let me guessâyour little boss?â Auren says with a grin. âIâve heard the rumors.â
ââŚYou are from Meteor City after all. Of course you have heard rumors. Your story is well known to us as well. People still talk about youâhow you tricked Lidor, killed him, and took everything he had,â Pakunoda replies.
Auren grins wider. âFunny. If those rumors were taken seriously, whyâd your boss send you and baseball boy after me? He was a Conjurer, and youâre clearly not a frontline fighter as well. You both paid for underestimating me. It served you right!â
âJack wasnât weak⌠though yes, he was among the least strong of our combatants. But donât fool yourself. Just because you beat himâand meâdoesnât mean you stand a chance against our top fighters, much less our boss,â she says, voice steady.
Weâll see about that, wonât we?
A few days later, the airship lands in a remote field deep in the Gordeau Desert. The location is isolatedâan enclosed basin surrounded by steep cliffs. A single odd-looking tunnel cuts through the rock, offering the only clear path in or out.
As the ship descends, Auren spots Rakshala, Grunah, and an elderly man approaching the landing site. Despite his age, the man stands tall and solidâthick muscles visible beneath his shirt.
Auren recognizes him instantly.
That tunnel⌠heâs the one with the earth-shaping Hatsu.
He instructs Pakunoda to get up and follow him outside.
âAuren, Iâm glad you made it,â Rakshala says as he disembarks.
âIâm sorry for dragging all of you into this messâŚâ Auren replies, his tone sincere.
I really created a mess⌠no. Not me. Fuck these Elders⌠they WILL pay.
âWhat a mess, indeed,â the old man says with a slight frown. âAnd our two Elders got captured so easily? Disgraceful.â
âIndeed, though you canât blame them⌠they were up against the Troupe after all,â Auren says, nodding.
âThis is Elder Rein,â Rakshala explains. âLeave the rest to me. Iâve already handled the negotiations and arranged a deal.â
She steps toward Pakunoda, her tone diplomatic but firm. âI expect your cooperation, Miss. If you comply, I can guarantee your safety.â
Pakunoda doesnât answer. She simply gives a small nod.
âNow, Auren,â Rakshala says, her tone serious, âas much as Iâd like to give you time to rest⌠the deal happens tomorrow. It will take place inside this small areaâmore like a prison carved out of solid rock.â
She turns to the crew. âLead her away!â she orders, pointing to Pakunoda.
âWait,â Auren says, stepping forward and gently pulling Rakshala aside.
âI think she can read thoughts⌠she kept trying to touch me. Multiple times,â he says quietly.
âTruly? Iâll take that into account,â Rakshala replies with a satisfied nod.
A few hours pass.
Auren now sits inside the tunnel systemâsimple chambers carved into the rock, sparsely furnished with beds and basic supplies. Time passes slowly in the stillness. Auren closing his eyes, relaxing.
I love this atmosphere⌠once this is over, I might return for a few months of training.
Ten hours later, the preparations for the deal begin.
Auren watches as Elder Rein manipulates the landscape by just touching it. The older man alters the tunnel structureâsealing off the original entrance and forming a new, narrow path that winds through the cliffs and leads into the center of the rocky basin.
Eventually, Auren stands with Rein, Rakshala, and Grunah in the middle of the open space. Pakunoda is behind them, restrained but calm. All around, positioned on the cliffs overlooking the basin, are thirty Nen usersâstrategically placed, ready for anything.
Multiple airships are hovering above the basin, modern weaponry prepared to fire.
Auren fixes his gaze on the newly formed tunnel with focused interest.
Multiple figures begin to emerge.
He spots several people walking through the passageâbut one in particular draws his attention.
A man in a large, dark fur coat.
He has black hair, slicked back. He walks with perfect calm, seemingly unbothered by the situation he is in.
