"It’s all thanks to you, Lady Seraphina, and your men from Azure Vales," Eugene said, his voice laced with a warmth that bordered on flirtation. He stepped closer, the ghost of a smile playing at his lips.

Seraphina arched a brow, her expression unreadable beneath the dirt and sweat streaking her face. "You jest, Ser Eugene," she replied, flicking her wrist to send the last links of her whip snapping against the ground. "We merely provided support. Morgen’s forces held the line long before we arrived."

Eugene exhaled, his chest tight with emotions he couldn’t—wouldn’t—voice. In another life, another world, Seraphina had been his. Seraphina paused, her fingers stilling on the hilt of her whip. She regarded him with narrowed eyes, as if sensing something unspoken in his words. "You’re bold, Ser Knight," she said at last. "Bordering on reckless."

Eugene chuckled, the sound rough with exhaustion and something softer—something like hope. "Call it a calculated risk."

A moment passed between them, charged with the unspoken. Then, with a slow smirk, Seraphina turned to her men, raising her voice. "You heard the man! We move at dawn!"

As the soldiers cheered, Eugene allowed himself a small, private smile.

This time, he had sworn to save the world.
