Chapter 538: Chapter 207 Clover Hunting TeamApart from the group of strong sheep monsters lingering around southwestern valley, rated around a magnitude of seven, there was also a powerful demon with a magnitude of nine detected not far to its east.
Zhan Shichen, the Right Aide of the Queen of Hearts Q, hoped that while his queen was dealing with the sheep monsters, that demon of magnitude nine would be sensible enough to clear off, or at the very least, mask its demonic aura as if it didnât exist.
However, he didnât expect Joan to deal with the sheep monsters so quicklyâthe speed was so fast that the other demonâs energy source barely seemed to move.
Not only did it not move its nest, but the demon of magnitude nineâs aura became even more intense. Despite being miles away, the sharp, potent demonic energy could be distinctly feltâlike a pack of hyenas marking their territory during mating season.
The conspicuous demonic reaction caused the compass needle in Zhan Shichenâs hand to shake violently within Tianchi, as if it were about to jump out at any second.
"I feel like I wonât need this thing at all today." The Right Aide of the Queen of Hearts Q put the compass back in its box and stuffed it into his pocket, sounding a bit disappointed.
"Indeed you wonât." Luke glanced at him and emphasized, "I didnât bring out the Godspeed Talisman for you to take it easy on the road. Canât you learn from Big Footboard and stick closely behind our team leader?"
He was referring to Ani Black, the Wandering Hunter of the Queen of Hearts Q.
As a member of the renowned Black Family, his hunting skills and expertise were exceptional. Thatâs why, after their swift discussion, he was the only one in the hunting group who could keep up with the deer.
This left Luke, who trailed behind them, feeling a bit restless.
"Not everyone has Big Footboardâs ability to run," Zhan Shichen joked, in an attempt to lighten the mood.
He quickly added in response to Lukeâs disapproving look, "Plus, heâs wearing the âBoots of Hermesâ, the latest upgrade from Martin Tuo Alchemy Company. Theyâre said to allow a speed of up to a hundred and sixty kilometers an hour... You canât expect much from these few talisman papers tied around our legs."
Luke snapped his lips closed, reemphasizing, "...If we donât speed up, weâll end up like just now."
"But... Isnât that a good thing?" Hunter Peter, worriedly looking at the half-burnt talisman on his leg, mumbled, "If we can get admission tickets to the âAcademy Cupâ just by cleaning up the battlefield, I wouldnât mind cleaning for an entire term..."
"We are a HUNTING TEAM!!" Luke angrily shot a glance at the short wizard, forcefully put more effort into his stride.
"Who... who disagreed with that... right?" Peter, who was nervously watching the receding figure of the Left Auxiliary, turned to Zhan Shichen for reassurance.
"So, letâs pick up the pace... I have a terrible feeling about the result of the divination just now." The Right Aide of the Queen of Hearts Q also finally dropped his jovial demeanor. He scratched his head anxiously and sighed deeply.
Past the valleyâs riverbeds and a couple of nearby small hills, the view abruptly expands.
Laying before the eyes of the members of the Queen of Hearts Q hunting team was a slice of lush grassland scattered with sparse trees. Thorny shrubs and windmill vines grew together with low-checkered grass and other short grass species underfoot. Overhead towered the mighty baobab trees.
The river took a turn at the end of the grassland, violently bending backwards leaving only a refreshing silhouette. In between the river and the grassland lied a strange, narrow, and highly pressurized air belt, leaving a field that would usually be saturated with water vapor in a constant state of thirst. Consequently, the grassland vegetation seemed wiltish and malnourished.
Regardless of whether itâs in the realm of humans or nature, those undernourished often found themselves at the bottom of the food chain. For example, those marsh grasses didnât even have the energy to grow taller to enjoy a little bit more of the sunâs caress.
Those slightly taller thorny shrubs, vine plants, and scattered baobab trees that dotted the grassland looked a lot more spirited compared to the marsh grass.
But they were still not the masters of this grassland.
Among the middle of this sparse tree grassland, there was a peculiar tall tailless monkey-like creature, fur shiny and sleek, climbing up the branches of the tallest baobab tree. Showing their teeth and snarling at the uninvited guests, trying to intimidate them.
These monkeys with glossy fur and nimble bodies were exceptional, save for their bloody red eyesâ If it werenât for these eyes, Luke believed he wouldnât mind feeding them some nuts to ease the tense atmosphere.
The witch who had arrived early was sitting cross-legged on the broad back of a moose, her back facing everyone, staring in silence at what was before her.
Her long sword lay across her lap, its deadly aura confined within its sheath.
This wasnât typical of the queenâs style.
Luke was confused in his heart, hastening his steps to approach the witch.
The moose, seeming to hear his footsteps, flicked its ears, cast a sidelong glance at Luke, twisted its body to point its butt towards him, and continued leisurely nibbling on the tough grass underfoot - for someone who enjoyed tender leaves, the grass here was disappointing.
Lukeâs face stiffened, and he halted his steps.
He was unsure whether the mooseâs posture was the witchâs doing, or the foolish animalâs own idea.
Fortunately, there were other members of the hunting team who had arrived earlier.
"Whatâs the situation?" he asked as he moved a few steps to Ani Blackâs side.
"Look at that group of demon monkeys," the wandering hunters didnât immediately answer his question, but instead hinted, "Their main guard is not towards our position..."
Luke immediately understood.
He looked up at the Baobab tree.
As expected, most of the adult monkeys in the demon group were looking in another direction, showing their fangs and roaring loudly. Only a few female monkeys and their offspring were facing the direction of Hearts Q hunting team.
Following the gaze of the monkey group, not far from the Baobab tree, stood an out-of-place boulder.
The stone was long and vertically embedded into the ground, like a rough imitation of the Leaning Tower of Pisa.
At the top of the boulder, a white-robed male sorcerer was seated.
Like Joan, he also sat cross-legged, but he had no sword on his lap.
The sorcerer was resting one hand on his cheek, leaning on his legs, while the other was laid lazily on his knee. His head was lowered as though he was asleep, but he might just be watching the ants crawling around the boulder.
Four figures sat or stood on either side of the boulder.
"Three-leaf clover team!" Luke muttered through gritted teeth, his face grim as he eyed the figures beside the boulder.
This was about the worst news possible.
Among the hunting teams participating in todayâs round-robin competition, the only one that could pose a threat to the Hearts Q team was the three-leaf clover team, which consisted mostly of members from the Alpha academy.
In the original strategy of Hearts Q, the two teams should not interfere with each other, with the final verdict being a fair competition based on the number of demon kills. Luke had thought that both sides implicitly agreed to this line.
However, clearly, things had taken an unexpected turn.
"All familiar faces." Zhan Shichen took a few steps forward, peering at the hunting team opposite on his toes, and said in a mumble, "Indeed...they are the real enemy."
