(II) Hunger
Chapter 52 of "Path of the Deathless" begins with suspenseful moments: 28 (II)HungerâI know about your mother,â Shiv said suddenly, breaking the silence. He didnât know... Donât miss it!
28 (II)Hunger
âI know about your mother,â Shiv said suddenly, breaking the silence. He didnât know an easy way to start, so he got it out: blunt, direct, honest.
Uva stared up at him as she lay against his chest. She hummed. âI saw in your thoughts. You have a skill for thatâForeshadowing.â
âYeah.â Shiv chuckled. He turned to face her as they rested. âItâs like the System wants me to be a voyeur. But maybe it also wants me to survive.â He shook his head, remembering Marikos. âThat damn dragon. I was just trying to get into Weave.â
She laughed. âDonât curse him.â
âWhy?â Shiv narrowed his eyes. âHe burned me alive. That didnât feel that good either,â he admitted. âIt was a six out of ten.â
âStop numbering your agonizing deaths. Itâs strange. But also⌠if the Dragon-knight hadnât slain you, we may have missed each other.â
Shiv thought she was right.
âWell, hereâs to Marikos and his stupid tantrum.â Shiv raised an imaginary glass. âSo that we can be here right now.â
He sighed in contentment and scratched Uvaâs head. She made something of a pleased noise. A few days ago, life in the alcove had seemed greatâit was an adventure. But this⌠this was something else. This might just be a perâ
In the corner of his eye, he caught sight of something atop the sole remainingâonly partially destroyedâcabinet. The bedroom light was destroyed, and without his new cloak, he couldnât sense well in the dark. When he realized what it was, though, Shiv tensed and cursed. âAh, shit. Ah, SHIT!â
âWhat?â Uva asked, lifting her head in alarm.
Shiv covered his face in shame as he pointed at the dagger heâd left on the tableâand forgotten in the throes of lust. There, The Cage of Valor Thann lay, unguarded. Uva immediately recognized the dagger too, and her reaction was even more severe. âOh, oh, Composer⌠Oh goddess⌠oh, no.â
She covered her face, and the dagger coughed. Valor said.
âNo, no,â Shiv interrupted, shuffling awkwardly to his feet. âThis is...â He looked at Uva; she hid her face in her hands. âGodsdammit.â
Valor sighed. â,â the dagger replied, sounding genuinely unbothered. â.â
âUh, that kinda sounds like a threat, ValorâŚâ
Uva started coughing violently.
Valor said nonchalantly, totally unoffended.
âI have no words to convey my shame,â Uva whispered.
Shiv did have words. âUh⌠sorry.â And those were his words. âYou want to go outside and sit with Adam for a while?â Shiv asked.
At the mention of his name, the Young Lord cried through the closed door, âif either of you come out holding that dagger, I will shoot you! Youâve already deprived me of a full nightâs sleepâwhat is wrong with you two? I live here as well! Other people live here! I went out for a felling walk! A SIX-HOUR WALK! I came back and YOU WERE STILL GOING!â
âMaybe I should just pull the memories out of his mind,â Uva murmured.
âElf! If you touch my mind, I will shoot you in the head!â Adam cried from outside.
Shiv blinked as he looked at Uva. âYou can do that?â
âWell, people forget things all the time,â she replied.
Shiv smiled slowly. âYeah. Yeah, they do, donât they?â
They maintained eye contact for a while longer before both of them dropped the ruse.
âYeah, I donât think I really want to do anything in Adamâs mind,â Shiv admitted.
âOh, good, how of you two!â Adam wailed. âIf you can hear meâif you arenât doing things to each other right nowâI despise the two of you. And I think the rest of the building does as well.â
âHe sounds genuinely upset,â Uva observed.
Shiv sighed. âHe probably misses his fiancĂŠe. Heâll feel better when I make him breakfast in the morning.â
âIt better be damn good breakfast!â Adam shouted. âIt's already morning, you monsters. You're lucky I found that key! It is morning! What in the godsââ
âThis is damn good breakfast,â Adam said, moaning as he took another bite of Shivâs omelette. The Deathless yawned slightly as he observed the Young Lordâs satisfaction.
From nearby came soft snoring. Uva lay sleeping on the couch thanks to the that befell the bed and the bedroom. Her mana field was still strained, and at some point sheâd simply drifted off. Shiv had made sure her food was covered and protected from Adamâs ravenous intentions.
Every few seconds, Adam eyed the guarded plate like a falcon spotting a rabbit in a meadow. âI still havenât forgiven you,â he said to Shiv, trying to hint at his intent.
âThatâs hers,â Shiv insisted. âIâll make you a bigger lunchââ
âI think I have⌠just the thingâŚâ Adam mockingly murmured in a husky tone, doing Shivâs voice.
âWaitâyou heard that too?â Shiv asked.
Adam stared as if Shiv had brain damage. âShiv, how many times do I have to tell you how high my Awareness Skill is? I can hear and sense whatâs happening in practically every room on this level. I can sense it. And considering you were right next doorâand you two have no inhibitionsââ
âOkay, okay,â Shiv said hurriedly. âIâm sorry. Sorry I messed up your sleep, Young Lord. Iâll make it up to you later. Wait⌠Didnât you go to an academy? There were a lot of people our age there too, right?â
âYes. And It was hell as well. My Awareness has always been my highest skill, which means short of an insulated, well-warded room, I learn things that I donât want to all the time.â Adam rubbed his temple. âGod, I miss Isabella. I need to get home.â
âWeâll get back there,â Shiv said. âWe just need the Composer to let us know where that gate is and how to use it to get back to the surface.â
Shiv then remembered something. âThere was a failure condition in the Quest to stop Harkness from bombing Passage⌠The failure condition was the closing of a Compact gate. I think thatâs the one weâre taking back up to the surface.â
âA Compact gate?â Adam looked puzzled. âWhatâs Compact?â
âI think theyâre one of the four Abyssal nations,â Shiv said, trying to recall. âThe faction focused on dimensionals and demons, apparently.â
âDemons?â Adam flinched. He openly invoked the protection of the Auroral Council.
âI wouldnât worry yet,â Shiv said. âI donât know the situation surrounding this gate or Compact as a whole. Maybe we can use it without subterfuge or open conflict.â
âMaybe⌠And maybe the heavens will open up and bestow upon us Blessings of infinite favor and absolute power,â Adam scoffed.
Shiv considered the Young Lordâs flippancy. âI wouldnât say I quite got that, but I think my odds are good if thatâs our standard.â
Adam was about to declare his hate again before swallowing the last bite of his omelette. âSoâwhatâs our plan in the meantime, until the Composer calls us? I expect a parade in our honor and a formal ceremony declaring us heroes.â
Valor said,
âA Blessing?â Adam sounded intrigued and worried. âA blessing from an Abyssal goddess? I suppose⌠even if sheâs a spider-woman-thing, she seems nice enough. She hasnât tried to eat us yet.â
âYeah,â Shiv agreed, hiding a wince. He thought back to how the Composer casually mentioned killing Adam if he threatened any of her subjects. âSheâs nice enoughâas long as you talk to her well and donât lie. Donât lie to her. She gets mad.â
âI will keep that in mind,â Adam said. âSo. Your plans?â
âWell, I think Iâm going to do some reading in a while,â Shiv said, âthen go outâsee the city, maybe stop by Cradle again, maybe try some restaurants tonight. Training. Practice. I think thatâs what Iâm going to go for. What about you?â
Adam hesitated. âI was thinking Iâd leverage my newfound respect and find a patrol to go on.â
âA patrol?â Shiv asked.
âYeah,â Adam said. âI donât like being cooped up in the city. Thereâs a lot of noise and chaos. I think Iâd be more useful outsideâŚ
âBecause you want to scout the Abyss? Find the gate or some other way up? Canât blame you.â Shiv sighed. âBut we go together. Do not run off on your own.â
Adamâs tone hardened. âWhile we enjoy our lives as heroes of the Abyssal Faith, our people are dying.â
Shivâs voice matched his. âI have people there, too. Iâm not giving up on them. But if we rush back blindly, weâll just die. Well. just die.â
He was about to emphasize how he couldnât convey how dangerous the actual Abyss was, but his recent intimate education with Uva taught him a few simple truths. âTrust me,â he beganâthen, without warning, formed a spell of intent and reached into Adamâs mind. He warded his recent experiences away, so Adam wouldnât be overwhelmed, but fed him a few of his own deaths: at the hands of the weavers in the Umbral Wilderness, at the flames of Marikos, against the high vampire.
As each moment flashed through Adamâs mind, he flinched until he nearly fell from his chair. âStop! Stop making me experience your deathsâgods!â
Shiv ended the visions. âSorry. I just wanted to show you.â
âShow me the enemyâdonât show me you dying.â Adam gasped. âI told you yesterday, I donât enjoy watching you die. Why would you give me that firsthand?â
âBut you understand now,â Shiv said quietly. âI donât want you to go out on your ownâyou donât get a second chance. With people like Marikos flying around⌠I donât think Harkness would be running openly without a care in the world.â
âWell, she does have a Legendary Skill capable of blunting a godâs attacks,â Adam said, âand I could see her trying to mentally enslave a dragon.â
âShit, youâre right,â Shiv muttered.
âBut I need to do ,â Adam insisted. âI need to be of use.â
Valor said, drawing both mensâ eyes to the dagger beside them.
âThatâs good for you,â Adam said, âbut Iâve already been to an academy. More education isnât what I needâI need practical experience.â
,â Valor said without offense. â.â
Adam frowned. âThank you for reminding me.â
Valor replied. â.â
âAlright,â Adam said with a sigh. âSo what do you have to teach?â
Valor laughedâa deep, arrogant laugh earned through power and pain. ââ
âYeah,â Shiv said.
âThe what?â Adamâs voice trembled. âYou donât mean that disgusting book bound in skin and layered with teeth, right?â
âOh, yeah.â Shiv smirked. âIâve been looking forward to that one for a while.â
âYouâre⌠absolutely certain?â Adam pressed.
âYeah,â Shiv said.
âYou are insane,â Adam reiterated.
Shiv passed Uva on the couch and tucked her blanket around her. Then he pulled from under the table the largest, ugliest book he had boughtâthe . He stared at it; the foul eyes on the book stared back. With his Psychomancy field, he jabbed at the mind magic spell placed on the book and found himself overwhelmed by its complexity.
âGuess that explains why youâre so expensive,â he murmured.
Without further ado, he opened the pagesâand felt himself drawn in mentally. When he surfaced next, he was strapped to a medical gurney, a group of vampires standing over himâtheir eyes blood-red, their clothing fine, but with pale, stained aprons around them.
âNow, my dear students,â a strangely elderly vampire said as he leaned close, âlet us begin our first lesson on the mechanics and dynamics of circulation and the fundamentals of .â
Shiv regarded the vampires as they licked their fangs. That was threatening, but the topic also seemed very interesting. âHuh. That sounds kind ofââ
And then one of the vampires lost control and sank their bladed teeth into his supple neck. Pain flared. Shiv choked. The next thing he knew, he was in another body being wheeled to replace the last person he occupied while the elder vampire chided his student for losing control during a class.
â-Shiv finished.
