Time moved forward.âTap, tap, tapâŠâ
Pandora ran out of the courtyard and onto the street, looking all around. The street was empty; there was nothing.
âSighââ
Pandora pursed her lips, tilted her head and thought for a moment, then ran towards one end of the street. She ran all the way to the end of the street and saw a carriage approaching from afar, coming closer and closer. A man in his fifties with partially grey hair, thin and gaunt, was carefully driving the horse.
Pandoraâs eyes brightened because she recognized the coachman; it was the same one Richard had introduced to her yesterday.
Pandora immediately raised her hand and waved.
The coachman saw Pandora and waved back in greeting.
As Pandora stepped closer, her eyes suddenly twinkled.
She saw the carriage, which had been moving smoothly, suddenly enveloped by an invisible force, lifted from the ground, and flew upwards.
The wheels spun âwhoosh whooshâ in the air, the horseâs hooves paddled the void, and the coachman was stunned.
Pandoraâs eyes widened.
The next moment, with a âwhooshâ, a multitude of Wind Blades swept past the carriage, chopping the coachman, the horses, and the carriage into pieces.
âWhoosh!â
The fragments of the carriage crashed to the ground, kicking up a great cloud of dust.
âPlop!â
The corpses of the horses and the coachman hit the ground; blood gushed wildly, quickly staining the ground red.
âSmackââ
Pandora stopped her approaching steps, a bit dazed and even more puzzledâhow had things suddenly come to this?
Had she seen it wrong?
Of course⊠it wasnât her mistake. Shortly after the coachmanâs death, three figures materialized from a twist in the air. Two of them were together, and the remaining one was from a different party.
The pair was Suo Men and Vasily.
The lone individual was Eisen, a Level One High Order Wizard from White Stone Tower.
Eisen was tall, around forty years old, with angular lines on his face that created a sense of sharpness and his grey hair added a deeply weathered look. He wore a brown coat over brown trousers, and a black round hat sat atop his head. In his hand, he held a gray wand, which was, in fact, a powerful Magic Wand.
Eisen looked very serious at that moment, focusing on Suo Men and Vasily, and said, âIâve found you! A bunch of rats that only know how to ambush!â
âHeh, actually, itâs us who found you, dummy,â Vasily retorted.
He was short, and seeing Eisenâs tall figure sparked an instant disdain, his voice sounding unusually sharp: âDummy, you must be thinking about how to escape and call for backup from White Stone Tower behind you, right? Heh, too bad, you wonât have that chance. Youâre going to die here, and itâll be a terrible death.
Of course, your White Stone Tower will be destroyed today as well, so you wonât be lonely. There will be many people accompanying you to the Netherworld.â
âHmph, you two rats, do you think I would believe you?â Eisen scoffed, gripping his wand tightly, âThe words you speak are less credible than the most deceitful merchant in the Underground Market!â
âBelieve it or not, dummy,â Vasily snapped back irritably, âIâm not your elder; thereâs no need to make you smarter. You just need to understand that you really are going to die. Go to die!â
As Vasily spoke, he waved his hand, releasing a large number of Wind Blades toward Eisen.
Eisen reacted quickly, striking the ground hard with his wand. A spell was cast, and the white stone slabs of the street rapidly cracked, shattered, rose up, and condensed.
âCrack!â
In the blink of an eye, a thick Stone Shield nearly one meter in diameter appeared in front of Eisen, facing Vasilyâs Wind Blades.
âSwish, swish, swish!â
The Wind Blades slashed at the surface of the Stone Shield, scarring it deeply, but failed to reach the core.
Eisenâs heart slightly relaxed.
At that moment, Suo Men made his move, flicking his arm, and a great amount of Flames appeared in the air, forming a giant flaming hand.
Next, the flaming hand clenched into a fist and harshly struck out, hitting the Stone Shield. The tremendous force of the impact made Ais back away involuntarily.
âCrack!â
Finger-thick cracks appeared on the surface of the Stone Shield.
Suo Men, without any courtesy, controlled the fiery giant fist to strike again fiercely, and with a âwhooshâ sound, shattered the Stone Shield.
âWow!â
Eisen spat blood as he was knocked back through the air.
But Eisen reacted swiftly, rolling to his feet as soon as he touched the ground. He first cast again, using a Magic Shield to block the attacks from Suo Men and Vasily, then counterattacked with an Acid Liquid Bomb to try to lessen the pressure and seize an opportunity to break through.
The battle was intensely fought.
Pandora stood dozens of meters away from the three wizards, staring blankly, somewhat at a loss.
Really at a loss.
She had just followed Richardâs instructions to check if the carriage had arrived. Now the carriage had indeed arrived, but it was chopped into pieces. How could she go back and report this to Richard?
âBang, bang, bang!â
The three wizards were blasting spells at each other, and Pandora furrowed her brows in deep thought.
Just then, Pandora heard someone quietly calling her, an old, timid, trembling voice.
âLittle girl! Little girlâŠâ
âScared?â Pandora turned her head, looked toward the sound, and saw at the end of the street in a courtyard, the gate slightly open. An old man with sparse hair cautiously poked his head out, urgently shouting at her.
âLittle girl! Come over here, itâs dangerous there!â Fearing that Pandora wouldnât understand, the old man stretched out a hand, continuously beckoning.
Pandora, puzzled, didnât understand why the old man was calling her. Feeling no ill intent from the old man, she eventually slowly walked over, distancing herself bit by bit from the battling wizards.
âTap, tap, tapâŠâ
Before long, Pandora reached the gate of the courtyard. Just as she was about to ask the old man why he had called her, the next moment, she was pulled inside by the old man.
Then the old man closed the door with a âcreakâ and, trembling, bolted it with several wooden sticks, pulling Pandora into the middle of the courtyard.
Pandora saw that many people were gathered in the courtyard, men and women, old and young. Each of them looked terrified, staring in the direction outside the yard, fearing that the wizardsâ battle spells might reach them.
Pandora blinked, and at that moment, the old man bombarded her with a string of questions: âHey, little girl, which family are you from? Where did you come from? How did you end up here? Where is your family? Why are you here alone? Arenât you afraid? I called you just now; why didnât you respond? Why arenât you talking? YouâŠâ
Pandora: ââŠâ
Originally, she was not much of a talker. When she first met Richard, she went many days without speaking. Now faced with a strangerâan old man asking her more than a dozen questionsâshe didnât know how to respond and just blinked her large eyes at him.
The old man held his forehead, turned to the people beside him, and said, âIt seems this little girl got frightened by the fighting wizards outside; let her take a moment to rest. Oh, that⊠Bottes, it seems quieter outside; could you check if the wizards have left?â
âUh, sure, Grandpa.â A golden-haired boy full of freckles, first curious, glanced at Pandora, then tiptoed to the wooden door. Peering through the crack, he cautiously checked the outside.
After looking for a while without speaking, the old man anxiously asked, âBottes, how is it?â
âGrandpa, donât rush me. I canât see any wizards right now; Iâm still checking.â
âI hope theyâre all dead, that not a single one can be found,â the old man said.
Just after his words fell, the golden-haired boy suddenly let out a loud âAh.â
âWhatâŠâ The old manâs inquiry was only half-spoken when they heard a âbangâ at the wooden door, as if something heavy had struck it.
The next moment, the old, flimsy door burst open, spewing splinters, as a nearly dead body flew inside, first hitting the golden-haired boy, knocking him down bleeding. Then the dying body crashed onto the ground, emitting heart-wrenching coughs. It was Eisen, the wizard from White Stone Tower.
The old man and others in the courtyard were momentarily stunned; then their expressions changed as they heard footsteps approaching from far to near.
