âIâm a fucking idiot,â Produrveral moaned into his palms. âJesus, what was I fucking thinking, letting him talk to me?â
Evanescia answered, her voice carrying snideness and pride in equal measure.
Her mocking words turned the Farwalker's spine rigid. He spun on her like a rusted wheel swiveling in place, and he glared at her using those shifting blue eyes of his. âI suppose we're both tools then, since he just screwed both of us over with that little stunt of his. Also, I wouldn't be in this position if you didn't stab me in the goddamn back.â
Evanescia took two steps towards the Farwalker and self-inserted into one of her many characters. Once more, she selected the towering, gangly Dimensionalist she'd first used against Shiv, Adam, and Uva in the Winter Court. An ocean's worth of spatial mana began to ebb out from her as the thin, pale creature she inhabited loomed over Produveral.
Evanescia's voice became overlapped with the snarling, ghoulish creature she now inhabited.
There was more than a hint of malice in its pitch-black eyes. The enkindled flames of Evanesciaâs heart burned in overlay with the lesser flame of her narrative slave, but the collective emotional inflammation raging within them was mirrored and matched by the building anger that lurked within Produveral. Evanescia's presence disgruntled him, but that disgruntlement was quickly evolving into something much worse. Produrveralâs words and posture betrayed a profound disrespect for his opposite. It was clear he didn't think highly of Evanesciaâs purpose, nor the fact that she kept so many people trapped within the Fairwoods with the justification of narrative design. What he did fear, however, was Udraalâs reprisalâand there was also more than a twinge of respect that sparked in his emotional core when Silence was brought into the conversation with relation to the Watchtower.
With neither of those individuals present, however, Produveralâs urge toward escalation rose in real time.
As the two Mythicâor even greaterâPathbearers stared one another down, Shiv leaned against a snoring tree a couple of meters away from them with rapt amusement on his face. The Culturist, Adam, Uva, and the strange eldritch egg that had apparently hatched from Longinus' soul were already back in the Tutorialâferried in an instant via Shiv's Severed Shadow. In the place of his Revenant form was a vessel of flesh that sported a map of brutal wounds across its body. Practically every bit of Shiv was bleeding. The only reason he hadn't slumped over dead was thanks to his Garden of Wounds and Broken Things. It exerted a subtle influence over his body, forming a protective crust made from blood and shifting injuries, thus adjusting him from a thing of pure biology to a seed of ruin.
It was that which allowed him to watch on without fear, for even if Evanescia and the Farwalker came to blows, the destruction they unleashed would feed his skill rather than deliver oblivion.

He chuckled under his breath. Truly, even on the cusp of unraveling, Harbinger of Tripartite Ruin was a masterful engineer of conflicts.
A few minutes agoâŚ
The admission was as demoralizing as it was honest. Unique Legend though Shiv was, the peek Produrveral offered at his power left matters beyond question: there was no fight to be had between them. The same went for Evanescia.
It wasn't that Shiv was entirely without options, with his Continuity Error Skill offering the possibility of fleeing from them at any moment. It was a card up his sleeve, but it wasn't the only one.
Though near sundered and unable to manifest its power in full, the Harbinger still provided insight into other beings, especially their empathetic cores. And despite their unspeakable strength, both Produveral and Evanescia were still creatures driven by emotion and thought. Their animosity toward each other was self-evident. Though it existed as dim flickers now, they could be fanned.
Right then, Shiv realized that perhaps even greater than his Unique Skills were the circumstances laid out before him. He and his friends were not mighty enough to best Mythic Pathbearers, but they could see them driven against each other.
And he didn't even need deception for that to happen. All he needed was for the Farwalker to continue insulting Evanescia and for her to grow ever more wary of this dimensional intruder.

Before schemes could fully take shape, Evanescia gestured in his direction, and Shiv, along with the others, came aglow with divine incandescence as the rewards for the Quest were given unto them. The equipment he had been stripped of when the Watchtower's flames washed over him was returned. He felt his cape furl out from his back, the dimensional shadow offering an entrance to a pocket reality where things could be stored and where a forest of alloy awaited to be harvested. His right hand was filled by the Last Morsel, its hefty presence a relief.
Then came his assorted armor pieces, and that was where things were a little different. Shivâs Voidmantid was never uncomfortable to wear, with how it integrated with his nervous system, but now it felt like he was in a glove of indulgent softness. And the new padding was most familiar. It felt like he was engulfed by bread or other fluffy pastries. The Voidmantid had been alteredâmerged with another set of armor Shiv had worn just recently.
As the radiance faded from Shiv, he looked down at his hands and found them clad in gauntlets. No longer was he just entombed in an exoskeleton of war-adapted biology; plating made from food had been interwoven with it, wrappings of bacon, lettuce, and more. It was an even more absurd sight than before, considering how his helmet had been turned into a great helm, sculpted from hardened cookie dough and sprouting a swaying chefâs hat from the top.
He was once more in desperate need of a mirror. When his Hydromancy skill recovered enough, he would shape a pool and use that to check his own reflection.
And Shiv wasn't the only one with his equipment altered.
Uva, the only person in his team still capable of combat, was now enwreathed by a dense cloud of orbiting metal fragments. Shiv recognized those fragments. They were from her shield, the one he didn't often see her use. However, the alloy of the fragments had been changed. They glittered with prismatic energy, and they rippled as if conduits to her magic. Hair-thin cracks spread between every fragment, and the taint Uva now inflicted upon mana was further imposed upon her new shield. But rather than being compromised, it was supercharged as the glinting shards of arcanite became small pinholes into the Outside. Shiv thought he saw feathered sirens and strangely colorful creatures moving behind the gaps into that place of unreality.
Cast in the glinting glow of her unformed shield was a mirageâa faint shroud of the Dragon-Knight whose mind was tied to the item. The massive warrior was little more than a shadow, but a shadow was still far more present than the formless entity of thought and ego he'd been.
And then there was the Usurper-Narrator's offering to Adamâdelivered unceremoniously as a rain of armor pieces smashed down on the unconscious Paragon. At first, it seemed she hadn't applied any additional enchantments to his armor, but then Shiv felt the presence of an empowered Magical Resistance skill.

The notification for his new armor loaded, but before Shiv could question all the details, he felt something croak inside his armor. Raucous cheering erupted in the back of Shiv's head, leaving him bereft of words. Where his food armor was bound in two fairies, now it sounded like he had an army of⌠toads hidden inside his plating?
The thought was ridiculous, but Shiv was fine with ridiculousâhis entire life had been a series of ridiculous incidents between all the horror and ceaseless violence; he certainly wouldnât begrudge some additional assistance either.
But before he could ask the toads if they knew how the skill worked, the gifts continued to flow.
