Chapter 129: Second Interview (1)After spending his full Sunday without doing anything, Monday finally arrived for Gray.

The atmosphere in the office felt different that morning. It wasn’t tense but definitely more alert than usual. People walked in the hallway, whispers passed between departments, and even the front desk assistant seemed unusually polished and efficient.

Gray stepped into the building shortly after 8 a.m. His tie was properly set, and the folders in his hand were already organized from the night before. He had reviewed each applicant again before bed, replaying parts of the first interview in his head and mentally noting the questions he wanted to ask today.

Today was the final round for the interview.

And this time, they were doing it one by one.

Unlike the first interview, where everyone entered in pairs and took turns across a single session, today was more personal. It was more direct.

The room where the interview would be conducted remained the same. It had the same long conference table, same tall-backed chairs, same polished floor. But the layout was adjusted.

There was only a single chair now sitting across from the interviewers, pulled slightly closer than usual.

Marcus arrived shortly after Gray in the room. His sleeves were already rolled up, and a coffee sat in his hand.

"Good morning. They’ve confirmed attendance already," he said casually. "All five. HR’s prepping the waiting area now. The first one should arrive soon enough."

"Good," Gray nodded. A small smile appeared on his lips as his eyes scanned the meeting space once again.

As they settled down on their chairs, Caesar walked in next. His blazer was slung over his shoulder. He greeted the two young men with a friendly smile.

"Hello, boys! Are you ready for round two now?" he asked them, fixing his cufflinks.

Despite being older and a senior in the company, Caesar was a warm-hearted man.

On the surface, he looked like the kind of person who would make interns cry just by walking into the room. His posture was always straight, his shoulders firm, and his voice was deep and even.

During interviews, he rarely smiled, and when he did, it was the small and unreadable kind that left people second-guessing whether they said something right or terribly wrong with their answers.

But people who worked with him closely knew better.

Behind the strict expression, Caesar was a father to everyone in his department. He brought snacks on Fridays, remembered birthdays without reminders, and personally checked in on his juniors.

Even Gray, who didn’t know him personally, was surprised to know about it too.

As Caesar pulled out a chair, he stretched lightly before glancing at the others.

"All five made it today, huh?" he hummed. "I take it we’re going to argue again over which one to keep?"

"I hope not," Marcus grinned. "But that depends on how they do today."

Caesar chuckled, rubbing his chin.

"Well, they impressed us the first time. Let’s see if they still can now that they’re on their own."

The door to the hallway opened a moment later, and Ms. Lopez stepped inside.

Her clipboard was in hand as usual. She took her usual spot near the side of the room, not at the table, but close enough to observe.

She offered a brief nod to the three men.

"They’re ready," she said. "Shall we begin?"

Gray gave one last glance at the clock.

It was 9:00 a.m. sharp.

"Let’s start." He straightened in his seat. Somehow, he was looking forward to what was about to come.

Caesar chuckled. He rolled his shoulders back and placed both hands over the table. His expression was now slipping into its usual unreadable calm.

The first applicant will arrive at any moment.

The knock came just a few seconds after.

Ms. Lopez turned slightly and answered, "Come in."

The door opened, and in stepped Diana Cortez.

She was calm, just like last time. Her blazer was neatly pressed, her hair tied in a clean low bun, and a single folder was in her hand. She gave a respectful bow toward the panel before walking to the seat.

"Good morning," she greeted evenly.

"Good morning, Diana," Gray nodded. His eyes briefly flicked toward the folder she carried before meeting hers again. "You may sit."

"Thank you, Sir," Diana respectfully replied as she settled into the chair across from them.

The air in the room adjusted the moment she sat down. It shifted from casual waiting to focused attention. She sat with her back straight and hands neatly folded over her lap.

She wasn’t nervous.

Or rather, she didn’t let it show.

Gray liked that about her during the first interview. Her poise. Her ability to stay composed even when the room grew quiet.

"Before we begin," Caesar started, his voice smooth and level, "I’d like to say thank you again for returning today. We’ve reviewed your previous interview, and this round will be a little different."

"We’ll ask questions more specific to the position you’re applying for," Marcus added. "But we’ll also ask some situational questions. Just answer honestly. This isn’t about giving the perfect answer but rather what you would do if you were in the situation."

Diana gave a small nod. "Understood, Sir."

Gray gave a small nod before leaning slightly forward.

"Before we jump in," he said, his voice a little lighter than before, "How have you been since the last interview? We know it’s been a few days since then. How did it feel when you received the invitation for this second round?"

Diana’s lips curved into the faintest of smiles.

"I was relieved," she admitted. "I remember walking out of the first interview unsure if I said enough or said too much. But when I got the message from HR, I felt proud. It told me I must’ve done something right."

She paused for a second to swallow, then continued, "So, I took the weekend to review my notes, revisit some of my previous work experiences, and prepare for today. I didn’t want to come here just hoping for luck."

Gray glanced at Marcus, who was already scribbling something down on his notepad. Caesar merely nodded once, his expression unreadable as always, though there was a quiet flicker of approval in his gaze.

"You prepared," Caesar said. "That’s good. A lot of people don’t treat second interviews with the same weight."

"I think the second interview matters more," Diana answered calmly. "The first round is about making an impression. This one’s about proving that impression wasn’t a fluke."

"Well said," Marcus remarked, flipping a page in his notes. "Let’s go a little deeper, then."

And with that, the questions began.

Each one sharper than the last. Diana answered with the same collected poise, but there were moments when Gray would notice her eyes narrow in thought before she replied. It was a good sign.

That means she was thinking of her answers before saying them out loud. She was here to explain, to prove, and stand her ground.

And the interview was only just getting started.
