With the staff leading the way, the man stepped fully inside. The moment he successfully went in, he noticed that the atmosphere of the place had changed. Compared to the bright exterior, the interior was warmer and dimmer.
"Right this way, Sir," the staff said, guiding him toward a counter near the side.
The man followed the staff without hesitation. As they walked, his eyes moved naturally as he took everything in.
There were lots of tables all around. Some were filled with players who were concentrating, but there were other tables with people laughing a lot.
Every table had its own dealer to initiate a game.
"This, sir, would like to exchange some chips," the staff said politely.
The man nodded and stepped forward. He opened his bag again, this time to fully take out a bundle of cash in his bag. He slowly placed it on the counter. The cashier didn’t react and just nodded before she began counting the money quickly.
Within seconds, she was done. After confirming how much it was, she took a stack of chips and pushed them toward him.
"Your chips, Sir."
"Thanks," the man muttered before gathering them calmly as if this was something he did often.
Once done, the staff gestured again.
"Please, come now."
They walked deeper into the casino this time. The further they went, the more exclusive it felt.
"Would you like me to give you a quick tour, Sir?"
The man shook his head lightly.
"There’s no need for that. I prefer to look around myself."
"Of course," the staff nodded. He bowed his head and was about to leave, when the man stretched his arms to stop him.
"Right," he said casually, as if it just came to mind. "Is your boss here?"
"Our boss?" The staff acted clueless at first. He pretended as if he was confused about it.
"We don’t have a bo—"
"Carrence." The man muttered the name that made the staff pause. He was just about so say that they don’t have any boss here. However, seeing that the man knew their boss, then that means they must know each other personally!
The staff let out an awkward laugh to mask his mistake. He swallowed before nodding.
"Our boss will arrive later, Sir.
"What time?"
"Around 9 PM," the staff answered. "It’s still a bit early."
The man slowly nodded at that.
"Alright. Innffrm me once he’s here."
’I will, Sir."
"You may go now," the man waved off his hand as if dismissing the staff.
The staff immediately understood it. He nodded, and he finally stepped away, leaving him alone.
For a brief second, the man just stood there. He was holding the tray of chips in his hand. His heart was beating loudly against his chest. He was really nervous.
"What do I do now, Sir?" He simply whispered.
"You can play first." Then Gray’s voice came through on the earpiece. "It’s still an hour before nine."
"Alright," the man muttered. He adjusted his posture slightly, then turned toward the nearest table.
It was time for him to blend in.
The man stepped up to one of the tables without hesitation. In there, they were playing a card game called Blackjack. It was a simple game that most people know.
He placed a few chips down as he sat.
"Are you joining?" the dealer asked.
"Yeah," he nodded.
The dealer smiled at it. After the current round ended, he was able to join the game.
The game started not long after. At first, the man kept his movements simple. The dealer slid the cards across the table. He picked it up and acted normally after.
Fortunately, he knew this game, so it wasn’t that hard. He played for a few rounds, letting himself get lost in time. He really looked like someone who was good at casinos. But inside, though, he was really nervous.
From time to time, he would glance to the side to see if the owner of the place had arrived already. But it was just other players coming in.
Time passed quickly until it turned into more than an hour. He was already getting bored and his nervousness had lessened.
He was able to win a few rounds here and there, so his chips remain good. Even if Gray and Mara told him in the earpiece that it was fine to lose that much, he couldn’t bring himself to lose money that’s not his.
’When will the man arrive?’ he was growing impatient.
Then, all of a sudden, the door of the entrance opened. A man stepped into it. He was about to just ignore when he noticed the staff’s reaction had changed.
The man was middle-aged. He was well-dressed. There was a cigarette between his fingers, with smoke trailing lazily into the air as he walked in like he owned the entire place.
The moment the staff saw him, they immediately lowered their heads as a sign of respect.
Gray’s decoy gripped his cards, tightened slightly when he saw that scene.
That was not normal at all.
His gaze followed the man discreetly. He noticed that even the guards near the entrance also lowered their heads without a single word being spoken.
The man slowly placed his cards down on the table.
"I think I found the person we’re looking for, Sir." He covered his mouth as he whispered those words.
"..." It took a few seconds before he heard a response on the other end. Like him, Mara and Gray should be getting impatient, too.
"Really?" Gray’s voice came through.
"Yes, Sir." He said in a low voice that only he could hear.
"Good. You can proceed with the plan now."
"...Understood." The man inhaled slowly. Then he looked down at his cards one last time.
"I fold," he muttered calmly before placing them face down on the table.
The dealer gave a small nod, immediately moving on with the round.
The man pushed his chair back slightly.
"I’ll sit this one out," he added as if he had simply grown tired of the game.
No one questioned him since that was just normal after playing multiple rounds consecutively.
He gathered the remaining chips in front of him, stacking them quickly before placing them back onto his tray. He smiled at everyone at his table before standing up.
It’s time for him to approach the man and introduce himself as Gray, Alistair’s friend.
