"Is everything taken care of?""Yes, Gray. We already took care of everything. You should calm down for a moment. You look like an anxious kid." Mara couldn’t help but chuckle as she saw Gray’s current expression.
Gray was frowning deeply. He was repeatedly looking at something on his phone. His lips were twisted, and there was an unexplainable look on his face.
"Hah..." Gray took a deep breath at that. He tried to calm down, but he couldn’t do it.
His heart was loudly pounding against his chest. His gaze kept flickering between his phone and Mara. His phone was currently showing the location of the man they hired.
They immediately went with the plan just 2 days after Selina found a person. They briefed the guy and told them the plan. Fortunately, the man was smart enough. It was easy to talk to him.
2 days ago, they were able to form a plan. And today was the day that they’re going to do it.
Seeing Gray’s seriousness over it, Mara just leaned forward and took a peek at the location tracker. In it, she saw that the man was already near the place.
"So that’s why you’re nervous, huh?" Mara raised her brow before eventually retreating back. She slowly shook her head.
Instead of pouring her attention on Gray’s reaction, she reached out to the earpieces in front of them instead. She turned it on and made sure the connection was there between the two sides.
They used a connection between phones since they’re naturally miles apart. It was nice that technology was way more advanced now, so they could do these things way more easily.
A few more minutes passed after that. All the time, Gray’s eyes were just glued to his screen. They waited patiently and quietly until a faint static sound suddenly broke the silence.
Mara’s hand immediately froze. At the same time, Gray’s head snapped toward the earpieces on the table.
Another sound followed and they knew it was finally the signal.
"He’s on," Mara said quickly.
Without wasting another second, both of them reached out to the earpiece at the same time. Gray grabbed one earpiece and slid it into his ear, while Mara did the same.
For a brief second, they couldn’t hear anything but just a brief static sound. It stayed for hours before they finally heard a voice.
"Can you hear me?" A man’s voice came through on the other end. It was slightly distorted but clear enough for them to hear.
When they heard that voice, Gray and Mara couldn’t help but look at each other. They swallowed deeply and nodded.
"We can hear you," he answered the question in a calm voice despite his fast-beating heart. "Report."
"I’m at the location now," the man replied. "I just arrived. There aren’t a lot of people around."
Gray glanced at Mara for a split second before looking back at his phone. The dot had indeed stopped moving at the entrance of the place.
"Good," Gray said. "Don’t move too much. Stay natural."
"Got it."
Mara pressed her lips, listening carefully.
"Do you see anyone suspicious?" she asked, her voice was calmer compared to Gray’s.
"There are a few people," the man answered slowly as if he was counting on his own. "But nothing obvious."
Gray’s brows furrowed slightly.
"Alright. Take care."
"Understood."
"Anyway..." Gray took a slow breath, forcing himself to stay composed.
"Listen carefully," he continued. "Just follow the instructions. The men to protect you are just everywhere. You might not see them, but they will be there."
Aside from putting on a decoy man to replace Gray, they also need to take further security measures. A few days ago, they set out men to go to the private lounge that Alistair mentioned.
They found out that it was a gambling den. It was packed with people at night, so it was easy to infiltrate the location without sounding.
The trusted people played there day and night, so that they would be a familiar face to the staff around. It was also to ensure safety since having too many faces in one go would definitely be suspicious.
"Yes, Sir. I will go in now."’
"Alright." Gray nodded even though he couldn’t be seen.
"Stay on the line," Mara added too. "We’re monitoring everything."
"Got it, Ma’am."
The other line became quiet for a moment. Gray and Mara could only stay quiet as they listened in anticipation. They might not see the place in their own eyes, but they hope that this plan will succeed.
From the man’s side, the air was filled with thrill and anxiousness.
Just like what they were looking for, his build was exactly the same as Gray’s. They have the same height, the same hair, and even the same facial features.
The man adjusted the cap slightly on his head.
’Stay natural.’ He talked to himself. His heart was beating loudly on his chest, but he was already here, so he couldn’t do anything more.
"Alright," he muttered under his breath before moving.
Just like the information given to him, the entrance to the place didn’t look like anything special from the outside. It was just a normal casino where people took their time to waste money and have fun.
The moment he stepped closer to the entrance, a man in a neat uniform immediately approached him.
"Good evening, Sir," the staff member greeted politely, offering a small bow.
"Good evening," the man replied, keeping his tone casual.
The staff’s eyes briefly scanned him from head to toe.
"Sir, I’m sorry, but no caps are allowed inside."
"...!" For a split second, the man stiffened. His fingers instinctively twitched at the brim of his cap.
’Uhhh...’ His heartbeat spiked.
"It’s fine," But Gray’s calm voice sounded at the other end through the earpiece. "Go on. No one knows you’re there."
The man swallowed.
"...Right. My bad," he said, letting out a small laughter afterwad as he removed the cap. He ran a hand briefly through his hair, as if fixing it, then gave a small smile.
"Didn’t know the rules were that strict."
"We try to maintain a certain standard, Sir." The staff smiled politely.
"Fair enough," the man nodded.
The tension from earlier slowly eased as he adjusted his posture, forcing himself to relax.
"Are you here to play, Sir?"
The staff stepped slightly to the side.
"Yeah." The man met the staff’s gaze and nodded.
Then, without hesitation, he reached for the bag he was carrying.
He unzipped it and took a stack of cash.
"I plan to have some fun tonight."
The staff’s expression shifted almost instantly when he saw the money.
"Of course, Sir!" the staff’s eyes lighten almost immediately. "Right this way to enter."
