"What do you mean you need a decoy man, Gray?"A soft and worried voice reached Gray’s ears. He slowly glanced up, and his vision was filled with the sight of a woman. It was Selina who was glancing at him with much curiosity.
Gray let out a sigh. He smiled at her before leaning back slightly in his seat. He ran a hand through his hair.
Selina was sitting across from him, her brows were faintly furrowed as she looked at him. Her eyes moved on their own as if she was trying to piece everything together from the minimal information he had shared so far.
"It’s a long story," he let out a sigh.
"Oh, I have all the time in this world, Gray," Selina didn’t budge. She even crossed her legs together and leaned back on the backrest, showing her totally relaxed posture..
"Hah..." Gray huffed softly at that, then glanced briefly to the side, as if organizing his thoughts.
He initially didn’t want to tell Selina anything, since he didn’t want to drag her into this mess further. But being together and knowing her, he knew that she wouldn’t just sit still.
"Alright..." He breathed out.
Selina’s eyes immediately locked unto his. There was deep curiosity in the way she looked at him. She had been waiting for this since earlier, when they started talking.
"Alistair contacted me yesterday," Gray started off. "He said he wanted to talk to me urgently, so I did."
"You just agreed to that?" Selina frowned. "Are you crazy?"
Gray sighed at that. He already knew that this would be her reaction.
"At first, I didn’t think it would get this complicated, okay?" He looked at her softly. When their eyes met, he noticed how Selina’s curiosity was now replaced by worry.
"I thought that he would just say a goodbye or something, but I didn’t know he wanted me there for my help."
"Tsk. It’s already obvious. How can you be so stupid?" Selina rolled her eyes at that.
Gray just shook his head and continued explaining.
"So he wants me to meet someone," Gray muttered, his tone turning more serious as he leaned forward slightly.
Selina’s eyes snapped at that.
"What someone?" she repeated.
"He didn’t give much detail. Just a place, a time, and instructions." He paused for a second. "And money."
"The same money you mentioned earlier?" Selina’s brows furrowed deeper.
"Yeah."
"..."A brief silence settled between them. Selina tapped her fingers lightly against her arm, clearly thinking about. The more she think, the more worried she became.
"This is dangerous, Gray."
"I know," Gray smiled, assuring her. "That’s why I’m taking my time to think this off."
Selina studied his face for a moment.
"So you want a decoy because instead of going yourself, you want someone else to take your place."
"Yup," Gray nodded once.
"Ha..." Selina let out a short breath. "Are you serious?"
"I am." Gray leaned back slightly again, his gaze drifting for a moment before returning to her.
"If I just walk in there the way he expects me to, then I’m basically handing myself over."
Selina didn’t respond immediately to that. She just stared at him, her expression slowly growing more complicated.
"So what’s your plan?" she asked after a moment of thinking.
Gray rested his arm on the table and told her what he planned to do this time.
"I need someone who can pass off as me," he said. "Maybe have the same build as me and the same height. That if you make him wear a cap, it would still look like me."
Selina raised a brow when she heard that.
"That’s not easy."
"I know."
"And what? Are you just going to send him in there alone?"
"Of course not," Gray shook his head. "I won’t ask someone for help, then leave him just alone like that. We’ll still be there to watch."
Selina’s eyes narrowed slightly. When she realized what he meant, she slowly nodded. It was not a bad plan at all.
"The whole point is to know that person. That’s all I want."
Selina leaned back again, crossing her arms now. But despite the assuring words of Gray, she still let out a slow breath, clearly not satisfied.
"You’re putting someone else in danger."
Gray’s jaw tightened slightly at that. He knew that well. That was why they needed to be careful about this.
"I know."
"And you’re still going through with it?"
"You know I have to, Selina. Gray didn’t hesitate.
Selina clicked her tongue softly, shaking her head. "Alright..." At the end, she had no choice but to do with it.
Selina let out another quiet sigh before uncrossing her arms.
"Fine, then, she muttered.
Gray immediately looked at her.
"I’ll try to find someone," she continued, brushing a strand of her hair back as her expression turned more focused. "I’d look for someone with the same height and same build. And also someone who has enough courage."
"Thank you, Selina." Gray’s lips curved into a small smile.
She immediately rolled her eyes at him.
"As if I have a choice," she shot back at him.
Gray let out a soft chuckle, shaking his head slightly.
For a moment, the tension eased between them. But that was only for a moment. Seconds later, Selina’s expression turned serious again.
The lightness in her eyes faded, replaced by something more serious. She straightened slightly in her seat, her gaze locking onto Gray’s.
"This is the last time, Gray."
His eyes glanced at her and Selina didn’t look away.
"This should be the last time you’re doing something for that Alistair," she said quietly, but there was weight behind every word. She meant her every word. "No more after this."
Gray held her gaze, and this time, there was no hesitation in his eyes. He slowly gave a small nod.
"After all of this, you have my word."
Selina studied him for a few seconds, as if making sure he meant it.
"You better keep that," she muttered.
"I will."
