Chapter 108 of "One Bed with the Boss" opens presenting key developments: âBro. Donât you think you might be worthy of being chosen in spite of that?â... Read on!
âBro. Donât you think you might be worthy of being chosen in spite of that?â Xavier asks.
I stare at the plate in front of me, unable to answer. Iâd like to believe that I am, but the fear lingers anyway. âI wasnât before.â
âAre we talking Selena?â Roarke snorts. âWho cares about her? She wasnât good enough for you anyway.â
âExactly. She only came back to mooch off you.â Gideonâs tone drips with disdain. âOtherwise, she wouldnât have bothered to bid practically half a mil on you.â
Xavier nods. âTotally. Iâd drop half a million if I could get several billion in return. Thatâs a great ROI.â
I roll my eyes at my brothersâ ridiculous cynicism.
âNone of us are saying you can just sit there and expect to be deemed worthy,â Silas says. âBut have some faith in yourselfâand Max, too.â
I take a moment and process my brothersâ advice. Is Maxâs reluctance and standoffish attitude my fault? Have I hurt her inadvertently in an attempt to insulate myself from pain?
Maxâs pale face at the restaurant flashes in my mind. She looked away, lowering her eyes as though hiding disappointment and pain.
I ruined the moment by not telling her how happy I was over our baby. I shouldâve hugged her and thanked her for the precious gift.
Goddamn it.How do I salvage this?
I canât disown my parents. So Iâve got to convince her that Iâm worth the drama and bullshit named Auric and Elita Kingswood. I need to prove to her Iâll be a good husband and father to our baby. Iâll never be another Auric Kingswood or, worse, a subhuman like Trevor Loomer. âWhat can I do to get her to take a chance on me?â I mutter.
Silas shrugs like itâs obvious. âBe yourself. So she can see what kind of man you are.â
âNo.â When I was just âmyself,â I lost the woman I thought Iâd marry because of my parentsâ behavior. A depressing thought lodges in my heart like burnt charcoal. âAll I have is money.â
âDonât be stupid,â Liam says. âYouâre much more than your bank account. Youâre one of the nicest, most loyal men I know.â
âYou were the first person I called when I got into my car accident,â Gideon says quietly.
I remember that. He lost control and hit a tree not so long after he got his license. âI thought you called me after you called Jeremiah.â
He snorts. âNope. She was getting paid to care, but you were always there for me,â he explains. âI knew youâd always have my back. Youâre familyâmy brother.â
âI think we all called Rhys first when we got into trouble back then,â Roarke says.
âYup. Even Mom and Dad. Remember the love hotel incident in Japan?â Liam says.
Finn shudders. âHow could anybody forget?â
Silas turns to me. âBack to you and Max, sheâs always known your net worth. Was she ever impressed by it?â
âNot really,â I say morosely. âI almost wish she were.â
Finn rolls his eyes. âIf she were, you wouldnât have liked her. Look, forget the money. Do something personally significant for her. Maybe she likes somethingâŚyou knowâŚhomey. And, uh, emotional.â He looks to the others for help, but all he gets is squints and furrowed brows.
I heave a sigh. Heâs rightâŚbut I canât think of anything either. I love everything about Maxâand itâs killing me that I might not be enough to be part of the future she wants. She doesnât just want normalcy for normalcyâs sake. What she said about her motherâs bucket list⌠She isnât just living for herself, really.
I lift my eyes heavenward. Would her mother approve of me? Enough to entrust her daughterâs happiness to my hands? Or would she say, âSorry, kiddo, your familyâs too weird for my precious daughterâ?
Silas gives me a glass of brown liquid. âHere. Drink this. Itâs my best bourbon. My thinking drink. Itâll help.â
I look at him. âBourbon?â Silas has always seemed too staid to need alcohol to lubricate his brain.
âNo freaking way.â Roarke stares at Silas in disbelief.
âWhat? Something about good bourbon gets my brain going.â
