Too bad,so sad,he doesnât want to marry one of Sorchaâs approved women.
âYou need Marie and Camiloâs phone numbers?â I say finally, tired of wasting time.
âWho?â
âAuric and Elitaâs assistants.â
âNooooo. That would be silly.âNo wonder the best you can be is the help, her tone says. âIâd like an appointment with Rhys.â
So you can rub yourself all over him like a bitch in heat?Just the idea makes me want to vomit. âHe wasnât even born when she was dancing.â My tone drips with faux sweetness.
âJust do your job, and let me be the judge of whether or not I need him.â
âMyjobis to manage his schedule and keep it free of unnecessary distractions. And right now, it says heâs too busy for you.â
âDonât be obnoxious.â Based on the seething in her voice, she barely stopped herself before addingbitchor something similar.
âListen, Selena. Youâre only calling me because you canât reach Rhys directly. So why not cut the attitude?â
âWhat are you implying?â She bristles. âIâve been strictly professional.â
âNot based on your behavior outside of Danicaâs.â
âOh myâ Are youjealous? We share a history.â Her voice grows provocative. âYou wouldnât understand.â
Amateur, I sneer inwardly. Lily might be a crass home wrecker, but her taunts were far superior to Selenaâs. âNor do I want to. Regardless, heâs busy unless you can make him billions. Buh-bye.â I hang up. There goes my good mood. Rhys swore he and she were over, and I tend to believe it because Iâve never seen him get re-entangled with a woman he broke up with. But that doesnât mean sheâs willing to slink away and stay low. An ex doesnât come back after fourteen years for no reason.
I get up and swiftly march into Rhysâs office. Heâs at his desk, reviewing another due diligence, most likely. He lifts his head, a smile splitting his face.
Without a preamble, I say, âYour ex just called. If she wants to see you, youâre too busy.â
The grin falters. He blinks at me once, slowly. âI am?â
âThatâs what I told her. I didnât like the way she asked. Besides, she âclaimsâ she wants to talk to you about Sorcha, but I donât buy it. What can you tell her about your grandmother anyway?â
âI dunno. Maybe how devastated Grandmother was when she learned I couldnât dance balletâŚ?â He shrugs.
Somehow, this makes me laugh. âDid she make you wear leotards when you were little?â
His face scrunches. âUgh. Donât even.â
I cock my head. She totally did.Cute. âAnyway, youâve been warned.â
âFine.â He grows serious, his eyes meeting mine unflinchingly. âI wonât meet her without your okay. You wonât have any reason to be upset. Scoutâs honor.â
Nodding, I return to my desk. Some time passes, I do a bit of work, and the initial annoyance wears off. Then:
Did I overreact?
Our relationship isnât even realâit has a firm expiration date. But Iâm reacting like I have some permanent claim to him.
My thoughts and emotions jumble together. I pick up my phone and text Ailee.
âMe: Hey, I need an objective opinion. Tell me if I screwed up:
I quickly lay out what happened with Selenaâs call, without letting her know about thefake-dating part. Thatâs a secret between me and Rhys, not something I can unilaterally decide to share, even with my best friend. Plus, until the final day comes, part of me wants to pretend itâs real.
âAilee: Wait, you already got yourself a new boyfriend, and itâs Rhys Kingswood??? I thought you hated your boss?
