Chapter Forty-Nine
âMe: Iâm going to marry the woman of my dreams.
âCzarina: What does that mean, exactly?
âMe: It means Iâm marrying Max.
âCzarina: She doesnât fit into our world.
âMe: Why? Because she doesnât reduce me to a monetary calculation like the women you chose?
âCzarina: Donât be crude.
âMe: The woman you like mostâSelenaâdumped me fourteen years ago because she felt embarrassed to be associated with Mom and Dad, even indirectly. She only came back because she wants my money, but if she finds someone richer, she wonât hesitate to leave. Because it was never about being with me, just having what benefits her.
âMe: Max isnât like her. She wants to be with ME. She doesnât care about anything else. Besides, sheâs carrying my child.
âCzarina: How could you have been so careless? Youâre going to beget a child with just anybody?
âMe: At least the kid wonât be inbred. If you want to come anywhere near the baby, much less hold it, you better start treating Max with respect.
âCzarina: Iâm your family!
âMe: As of this moment, so is Max. And her happiness matters the most. I hope you understand.
Chapter Fifty
Max
Two weekends later, a charcoal grill is delivered. Rhys looks at it taking up space in the backyard, then nods with satisfaction.
âItâs the size of a pickup truck,â I say. âAre you inviting everyone from the firm?â
He shudders. âPerish the thought. Itâs just for two of us and, of course, my brothers. Barbecue parties are more fun with more people. And Iâve got to show Liam Iâm capable of cooking.â
âWhat did he do?â
âHe always acts like Iâm going to kill myself if I try to cook something.â Rhys presses his lips together.
I shake my head, trying not to laugh. To be honest, I canât imagine Rhys cooking either, but I donât want to hurt his feelings. âWell, thatwasnât nice of him.â I manage a censorious tone.
âRight? I might just give him the bad burger if I mess one up.â Rhys starts the grill.
I watch him for a moment. Iâm still unsure whatâs gotten into him, but whatever. Worst case, he whips up something inedible and weâll have to eat out.
Within half an hour, the brothers start to arrive. A vague concern crosses Gideonâs face as he studies the grill. âWeâve never had a gathering that involved food here,â he says.
âSilas brought the coleslaw and sides, so maybe itâll almost be like one of his parties,â Liam says, pasting on a smile thatâs more pained than happy.
âThis grill is the star,â Rhys says.
Gideon still stares at the patties dubiously. âCanât decide if I should be nervous orââ
Xavier slaps his shoulder. âYou have life insurance. Youâll be fine.â
âChildren, behave,â Rhys says. âI have studied under a master.â
âReally?â Roarke couldnât sound more skeptical.
