Chapter 97 of "One Bed with the Boss" begins with suspenseful moments: âI see.âA tall, lanky blond guy steps onto the stage, his tie undone in insouciant... Donât miss it!
âI see.â
A tall, lanky blond guy steps onto the stage, his tie undone in insouciant rebellion. The emcee, a young woman in a golden dress, goes on and on about all his positive attributes. He isnât badâif you like the cyclist type with lean, ropey muscles and an overbleached smile. I might be tempted if I werenât already dating Rhys.
âStarting at ten thousand,â the emcee says with a wide grin that screams,Big money, big money!
Three womenâtwo brunettes and a redheadâfight fiercely for a date with him, throwing out numbers and raising the bid to ninety-five thousand in no time at all.
âGoing once. Going twiceââ
Suddenly, a tall blonde butts in. âOne hundred thousand.â
The three glare at her like sheâs the scum of the universe. She merely shrugs. âBeat the bid orâŠâ
From the confident smirk, she already knows she won. The emcee says, âDo I hear a hundred and ten?â
The trio stays mute. But their eyes do not.Bitch, you bitch!they shriek silently.
I lean over. âIs that guy really worth one hundred thousand?â
âWell, some women think so, although I donât think heâs worth much of anythingââLiam gestures at himselfââas long as thereâs meâŠâ
I laugh. âModesty your strongest suit?â
âAlways. Modestly confident, thatâs me.â He grows serious. âBut to answer your question, Phil isnât bad.â He gestures at the stage. âNot as accomplished as Rhys, but most people arenât. If he werenât my brother, I might not like him for being so damn perfect.â
âYou think heâs perfect?â This ought to be good.
âOf course. Heâs good at his job, very strict with himself. Not only that, he takes care of everyone. He takes care of our parents, which sounds strange. But if you know anything about my family, which you do, you know thatâs just how it is. When they made a mess in Japan and France, heâs the one who sent people to clean up after them. And he made sure to keep them away from us, to stop them from hurting us so much. I think heâs more in pain than I am every time Mom and Dad say that I really didnât do much for them. That they thought it mightâve been better if I hadnât been born at all.â
Thatâs justâŠawful. What heâs saying is horrible enough to slash at anybodyâs heart and pride, but his tone is so blasĂ©, like heâs discussing clouds in the sky. His parents mustâve said it openly and repeatedly over the years for him to just accept the situation and decide to live with it.
I feel like I should console him, but Iâm not sure what to say, especially when his reaction is so indifferent. âIâm so sorry,â I manage after a few moments.
He shrugs. âI was an accident. Mom didnât want to have more than three kids.â
âStill, itâs horrible.â
âYou get used to it.â
He shrugs again with a carefree grin. But I know better than anyone that a smile doesnât mean youâre okay. It can hide unimaginable pain.
The blonde claims her prize, and the next bachelor takes the stage.
Suddenly, Liam scoots closer. âHey, can I ask you a question? Somethingâs been bugging me, and I donât know what to think.â
âSure.â Hopefully this wonât have to do with his parentsâ cruelty, because thatâs one thing I canât help him with.
âWhy would a smart, confident woman let her fiancĂ© treat her like shit?â
I tap my fingers. Unexpected, but heâs looking at me, his eyes earnest. I choose my words with care because it might be somebody he likes. âMaybe sheâs not as smart and confident as she appears.â
He shakes his head. âGive me something less obvious.â
âWhy do you think sheâs confident and smart?â
âItâs hard to explain.â He frowns. âItâs just the way she carries herself. The way she speaks. Shoulders straight, never avoids eye contact. You know, stuff like that.â He rolls his wrist. âPlus, we were in some of the same classes in college. She was the one who always broke the curve.â A hint of admiration glimmers in his eyes.
âBut she lets her fiancĂ© treat her badly? She doesnât protest or do anything about it?â
