Chapter 54 of "One Bed with the Boss" starts with: âLetâs just say itâll be a win for everyone.âMax shoots me a concerned look. She... Continue exploring!
âLetâs just say itâll be a win for everyone.â
Max shoots me a concerned look. She knows my reaction isnât a good sign, even though my parents seem oblivious. Itâs embarrassing as hell, too, to have her witness their lack of propriety and decency. I figured Iâd become immune after three years of her seeing their behavior, but the humiliation never seems to weaken.
The only reason she hasnât left me over their obnoxious behaviorâlike Selenaâis that I pay her.
âWhy donât you let the other party know Iâll be a little late?â I ask Max, desperate to get her away from this farce.
âOf course.â She nods stiffly, then leaves.
As soon as the door closes behind her, Mom turns to me then huffs. If she were a couple decades younger, sheâd be tossing her hair over a shoulder with a snort like a homecoming queen in a pique. âMuch better. I hate it when she hovers like she has every right.â
âShedoeshave every rightâcertainly more thanyou,â I say.
Dad frowns. âDonât be rude to your mother.â
âOh, Iâm used to it.â Mom sighs and dabs at a nonexistent tear. She shouldâve gone into acting. âRhys, seeing you with a decent wife and a baby will ease your grandmotherâs heart. Youâre the oldest. Sheâs worried about you.â
Iâm actually speechless. Sheâs just started worryingnow? After letting my parents run wild for decades? What nice woman would want to settle down and marry me? Even if she did, would she stay after seeing my messed-up, ridiculous parents?
âYou donât have tostaymarried. Just long enough to make it look respectable. Then divorce the woman and keep the baby,â Dad says. âYou have no idea how much your birth kept your grandmother occupied. It was fantastic.â
âIt was terrible when the effect wore off. But, of course, one can always have another child. That was the main reason we decided to keep Liam.â
Dad nods sympathetically and pats Momâs hand.
What have I done to deserve this torment?âSo what makes you think sheâll suddenly care about an eighth baby?â
âBecause itâll be her firstgreat-grandchild. Something new.â Dadâs tone says I must not be very bright to not realize that.
âSo, marry someone, get her pregnant, then divorce her and keep the baby, which in turn will keep Grandma occupied and off everyoneâs backs. That about it?â
Dad and Mom both nod, pleased that weâre finally all on the same page.
âNo. Iâm not going to be heartless toward some innocent woman,â I say, not bothering to hide my disgust. âEspecially not in response to a scandal Iâm about to rip into pieces.â
âWhat scandal?â Dad looks genuinely confused.
âThe âhigh school seniorâ? Except sheâs really twenty-six? And supposedly pregnant with my child?â
âOh, that,â Mom says with a light laugh. âSheâs a stripper, too. Totally not in high school. I donât know why they reported it like that. Very unfair to you.â
Dread starts burning in my gut. âHow do you know all that?â
Dad leans forward. âOkay, you canât tell your grandmotherâŚbut it was reallyme.â A hint of bone-deep satisfaction glints in his eyes, like a teenage boy admitting to finally kissing a girl he has a major crush on.
âWhat thefuck? Did you pay her to lie?â
âDidnât have to. I just told her my name was Rhys.â
Oh my freakinâ God. âWhy?â
âBecause she invited me to a threesome. So, I was a little drunk at this nice strip club,â Dad says, warming to his story. âIâll take you later if you want. Anyway, by the time I realized what was going on, it turned out that the threesome was with only one girl, which Iâve never done before. Because, you know, Iâve always been with two girls, but this time there was this other guyââ
TM-fucking-I. âYou shouldâve walked away!â
âOh, I never give up a chance to try something new. Anyway, she asked me for my name, and I was about to tell her. But thenyour grandmotherâs disapproving face popped into my head andâŚwell, your name just sort of slipped out.â
âIt justâŚslipped out. Like a fish from a net.â
