âSilas: Wait, youâre going to skip work to play hooky with your girlfriend?
âGideon: Sounds like youâre sick. Like, terminal cancer sick.
âXavier: More like terminal pussy-on-the-brain.
âMe: Iâm healthy, no cancer in the family, you know that. I just want to prep Max before Czarina learns about my new relationship status.
I need to get her battle ready before Czarina summons us. Max doesnât tolerate bullshit and can probably hold her own against Grandma, but itâd be remiss of me not to equip her properly first.
Chapter Thirty-One
Max
âLetâs go, Max.â
I look up from my laptop as Rhys comes over to my desk. âYour next two meetings are Zoom calls,â I remind him in case he forgotâor didnât pay attention because he was too busy staring at my boobs. He probably picked the scoop-neck dress exactly for that purpose.
âItâs fine. Finnâs taking over.â
âSince when?â I say, checking emails and the interoffice messenger. Not a peep about the switch.
âSince now.â
âWhy?â Rhys is acting strangely. âAre you okay orââ
âNo cancer. Healthy as a horse. But we have an appointment. Canât go if Iâm on Zoom here, can I?â
âWhat appointment?â
âOneImade. Letâs go.â He gestures.
I have so many things to say, but nothing I can utter when there are so many ears. I press my lips together until they hurt. Suspicion bubbles in my mind, but has to wait until weâre private.
Once weâre alone in the elevator, I turn to him, my eyes narrowed. âAre we playing hooky? The rated-X version? The one you wanted to do this morning?â
Rhys taps his chin thoughtfully. âNow that you mention it, wecouldââ
âRhys, we need to take our work seriously. I donât want people to think Iâm slacking off.â
âNeither do I, but I also take my girlfriend seriously.â
I rest my hands on my hips and glare up at him. âWell, yourgirlfriendsays you should do the meetings like a big boy, not foist them off on poor Finn.â
âPoor Finn? Ha!â He snorts. âI think my girlfriend needs some nice clothes and shoes after seeing her sad state this morning. Why make yourself miserable by wearing something that doesnât make you happy?â
My hands drop limply. âOh.â Embarrassment burns my face. Although my exes usually made time to be with me mainly to get laid, I shouldnât assign the same motivation to Rhys. After all, he has shownâso farâthat he isnât like any of my exes.
âI want my girlfriend to look the part,â he says. âThe right clothes and shoes and everything else. Itâs very important, because my grandmother will never believe weâre dating if you continue to wear whatever you bought while stressed about your insurance payout. It wonât be you spending your money, since, like you said, your account isnât unlimited, and our relationship benefits me, too.â
I nod, grateful at his explanation. Heâs never this patient. For him, most things are self-explanatory. If you donât get it, itâs your problem.
Then something else occurs to me. âYou never bought things for your exes, though⌠Or did you? You were always working too many hours to shop, but youâre making time to takemeshopping.â
âThis is different.â
âHow? You feel like you have to pay for me because weâre faking our relationship?â If so, Iâll be more disappointed than I want to let on. Even if we arenât genuinely boyfriend andgirlfriend, Iâd like to think we are doing this together because we at least like and respect each other.
âNo. Just because itâs fake doesnât mean itâs a monetary transaction.â He takes a deep breath, his brow furrowed. âItâs hard to define. LikeâŚsome of the companies weâre looking to acquire. Some are worth the investment and some arenât.â
