Chapter 1059: AfterpartyâAfterparty?â
Quinlan mused out loud while being dragged across the halls of the Valorian Palace. His hand was very tightly gripped by a certain young lady.
The festivities had officially ended, and the nobles were currently leaving the palace, slowly trickling out its ornate doors and entering their obscenely luxurious chariots.
However, when Quinlan tried to do the same, a maid informed him that his presence was requested. It turns out the one behind said request was none other than Felicity.
âYes! You got really angry and had to teach a lesson to those arrogant nobodies, then all the other things happened, and we couldnât even chat! That was the whole point of you coming here!â
âWas it?â Quinlan chuckled amusedly. âI wasnât informed.â
âIf it were me who acted half as entitled as this annoying brat does, youâd call me a damned brat! At least a hundred times a day at that!! What gives?!â Feng cried, visibly offended.
Felicity harrumphed. âAnnoying brat?! Jiai, watch your misbehaving mouth!â
âOr what? Youâll cry for your parents?â
âThis is why youâre a clueless brat while Iâm a noble ladyâŚâ Felicity shook her head with condescension while turning toward Ayame and Quinlan.
âLady Black, Lord Black, could you please keep your overly loud child from barking obscenities in the royal palace? What will the maids think?â
âHah?!â Feng snapped, but to Felicityâs dismay, Quinlan pretended not to hear her request. He wasnât one to enter such catfights, thinking it was best to leave these matters to the ladies.
Ayame, for her part, didnât feel like chiding Feng when she agreed with the girl wholeheartedly. Quinlan wouldâve indeed called Feng a brat a hundred times over if she acted like Felicity does. Of course, Quinlan did it with warmth, greatly cherishing Feng as a person. The pairâs connection was incredibly deep, easily triumphing over whatever budding little friendship was slowly building between Quinlan and Felicity.
In fact, the alien girl from Zhenwu perhaps even triumphed over the depth of what he shared with some of his lovers.
But, perhaps exactly because of that, Feng was treated by Quin as if she were his little sister, not a royal princess he had to interact with while displaying at least a bare minimum of respect. Furthermore, he kept Feng close purely out of how much he cherished the girl, while Felicity⌠Being in her good graces was incredibly beneficial to him. Thatâs not to say he was purely using the princess for his ulterior motives, but unlike with Feng, his intentions werenât wholeheartedly innocent.
Hence, the difference in treatment. The fact that Felicity was a royal princess and they were in the royal palace didnât help Fengâs cry for equal treatment either.
But at least seeing that neither Quinlan nor Ayame sided with Felicity filled her with joy, which she wielded openly as she looked at the princess with so much smugness in her gaze that Felicity had to blink a few times. She was not at all used to being treated as such. However, the girl couldnât help but giggle in the next moment. Truly, she had a lonely upbringing, lacking in real people who treated her normally.
They quickly found themselves back in the garden where the talks before the feast took place. Tea was quickly brewed once again, and they sat in the shade.
âWhen are you giving your presents to your father?â Sera asked.
âWeâll hold a little celebration tomorrow where only we, the Valorian family, will be present! Thatâs when Iâll surprise him! Miss Elf, I canât wait to see his reaction!â Felicityâs present was going to be multiple nature accessories she made using the elven techniques Seraphiel taught her while in the grand auction.
As such, the elf wanted to know the success of the gifts as well.
âIâm sure heâll love them. Didnât he already get a prototype or something?â Aurora voiced her thoughts.
âYes, but I went all out with the real presents!â
A cold voice spoke up next. âThis is fun and all, I suppose, but I want to go back home. Right now.â
Who couldâve guessed that Iris was itching to shed her gorgeous, noble dress with its horribly revealing skirt and everything and return to the comforting embrace of her dark armor? Finally being able to stop playing the role of Quinlanâs wife (ewww!) also seemed like a truly tantalizing prospect.
âYouâve been behaving much better than I expected, truth be told.â Ayame nodded along sagely. She even reached out to pet Irisâs lush black hair.
The Skysplitter found her arm twisted and broken.
Or she wouldâve if she hadnât retracted it at the last moment.
âStop treating me like Iâm an untrained dog. I behave properly all the time.â
â⌠How can you say such a ridiculous line with a straight face?â
âAs soon as we get back home, Iâm beating you to a pulp.â
âWould you happen to mean that youâre going to get utterly humiliated in the pit? Husband, now I want to go back too.â
âAww! Miss Black!! Donât fight, and more importantly, donât leave!â Felicity protested strongly, but Quinlan slapped his knee and stood, lifting the sleeping midnight furred cat from his thighs onto his head.
Truth be told, he was itching to get back home as well and start getting prepared for what came next.
âWeâll meet again soon, princess.â
âN-no⌠You didnât even finish your tea!â
In response, Quinlan grabbed the whole jug and chugged all its contents, making the purple-haired girl pout incredibly strongly while stomping her feet repeatedly.
âHere, maybe thisâll lift your mood a little,â Quinlan said while reaching into his pocket ring and bringing out a black crystal.
âOh!!â Felicityâs eyes instantly began sparkling, completely forgetting that she was supposed to be angry right now. âNow I can call you whenever I want!â
âYes, but I wonât pick up unless I feel like it.â
âLord Black! Bad!!! Hpmh!!!!!!!!!!â
âKnowing this manâs utter shamelessness, youâll be left hanging 99 times out of a 100. Prepare your heart,â Feng nodded to herself sagely, knowing Quinlan all too well. She was absolutely right. Her words earned even more stomping and huffing from the princess.
âWell, itâs been fun. Thanks for the tea,â Quinlan said, trying to change the topic.
He turned toward the doorway leading back to the halls of the palace and toward the exit. But when he did, a sight Quinlan hadnât expected welcomed his gaze. It was a woman, but no maid.
No.
It wasâŚ
âQueen Morgana.â
The moment Quinlan spoke her name, the garden fell into silence.
Queen Morgana stepped forward from the shadowed archway. Her stride was measured, unhurried, yet heavy with a force that made the air itself stir.
Gone was the practical gown she had worn during the banquet. The ceremonial attire that, while beautiful, was cut for function more than indulgence. She shed it. What adorned her now was her true battle garb, the mageâs second flesh: an obsidian-tight weave threaded with azure.
She didnât respond to Quinlanâs words, nor to the startled gasp of Felicity. âMom?! What are you doing?â
The girl was ignored. Instead of answering, Morganaâs amber gaze burned ahead.
