Chapter 1139: Annoying FliesThe purple sheen along her blade deepened until the air around it shivered. Mana flowed into the steel like venom into a fang. When she answered, the words were soft but absolute. âYou do not understand. You never will. You are incapable of doing so.â
Her blade hummed with a venomous hiss, the sound of which set teeth on edge. The purple aura spilled outward in a thin mist that tasted of iron and old graves. Soldiers nearest the front heeded Elder Chizuruâs words as if they were orders of the Goddess herself, bolting far away from the confrontation.
Black Fang did not move; she only leveled the point of her sword at Chizuru and Kaede.
âYou mistake my hostility for an old grudge stemming from what youâve done to an innocent infant all those years ago. But I remember nothing of those years; I remember only the life I carved from nothing. I owe no debt to blood or house. Your claims of kinship are irrelevant to what I have become. The reason you perceive me as hostile is simple; when insects buzz incessantly, I grow an urge to kill them.â
In the next moment, Black Fangâs head tilted sideways. The motion was entirely unnatural, making anyone who saw it flinch involuntarily. The porcelain calm of her eyes broke, and an electric madness unfurled there.
âThat may have been true before. When you only buzzed at the edges of my life, I tolerated you with only mild strikes, so you scurried away, and peace was restored. Your histories and your offers were background noise, easy to ignore.â
The swirling of her mesmerizing purple eyes intensified. âBut you marched into my house, you attacked my disciples, you desecrated the one place that held memories of what I had become, and now the noise you make no longer matters. Now the insects will find no peace, even if they were to fall silent. I will hunt them down until there is nothing left of them.â
Chizuruâs lips trembled at the sight of this Fujimori girl teetering on madness when she shouldâve been guided safely by their elders, raised among them as their cherished member.
The old woman had fought through centuries and seen more cruelty than most, but even her face could not hide the softness beneath the grief. She let out a long sigh. âIâm weary of the past⌠We did what we believed necessary, but in the process, we ruined such a capable youth. You shouldâve become our clanâs great pride, not our venomous hunter.â
Black Fangâs expression shifted.
The doll mask she wore for so long slid, and for the first time, a raw, human edge shone through not only in her eyes but in her entire existence.
âYou call it ruination, I call it liberation.â
She smiled. It was a curve of her lips that lacked any and all warmth, a smile that spoke of madness and a desire for bloodshed.
âNow⌠die.â
She moved instantly. The purple haze surrounding her katana thickened, coalescing. Her hands traced an intricate sigil, and the aura of her presence warped reality itself around her.
The sky above them shuddered right before black spikes materialized, laced with venomous darkness, crashing back down right toward Chizuru and Kaede.
Chizuruâs eyes narrowed. She grunted, muscles straining, and her voice boomed: âKaede! Iâll back you up! Go all out!â
Kaede didnât hesitate. Her blade shimmered with silver and moonlight as she stepped forward, weaving her technique with Chizuruâs guardians.
The two moved as one thanks to the experience of the old woman. While Kaede acted as a vessel of raw power capable of immense destruction, Chizuru ensured to back her new clan leader up by acclimating her fighting style to Kaedeâs, making both of them stronger.
Chizuruâs bronze-and-flame hounds leapt into the sky, slashing and biting at the dark tendrils, while Kaedeâs blade streaked like a comet, cutting through it all.
The three women danced death around one another.
Black Fang moved both like the most graceful woman to have ever graced Thalorind with her presence and like a rabid dog all at once. Every strike of her katana was a whip of venom, every step calculated yet feral. Giant serpents of death coiled from the ground at her command, snapping and lunging at Chizuruâs guardians.
Kaede cut through them like moonlight through night, making silver arcs shred fangs and shadowed flesh. Chizuru barked orders, her aged hands guiding the hounds with force, every leap and bite timed to perfection.
Blades clashed. Purple haze met silver streaks. Venom hissed as Kaedeâs edge met Black Fangâs. Black Fang lunged, twisted, took damage, and struck again. She was the personification of relentlessness, willing to risk even life itself to land a killing blow.
The serpents writhed, snapping at anything living, while the guardians countered with bronze and flame. Kaedeâs strikes were unstoppable, a hurricane of lethality, while Chizuruâs mastery kept the battlefield moving in their favor, each move a counter to death itself.
For every creature Black Fang summoned, Kaede and Chizuru cut it down. For every strike Black Fang landed, they bent and twisted, barely avoiding fatal blows, retaliating with the kind of force that could sunder mountains.
The air was thick with venom, fire, and steel. Every clash was a moment away from death, every movement full of brutality.
There were three forces of war: Kaede, raw and lethal; Chizuru, experienced and strategic; Black Fang, a terrible, untamed predator who would fight until the last drop of blood.
Quinlan whistled softly as he watched the battle from a great distance.
âHuh⌠so thatâs Black Fang. I finally see what this mysterious woman is all about: a blend of bloodlust, madness, and stubbornness all packaged into a heavenly bombshell of a female body,â he murmured.
His eyes glimmered with awe as he whistled, âNo wonder Yoruha kept bolting in the opposite direction instead of confronting her. It was absolutely not worth the risk.â
He let the whistle trail off. Even from this distance, the display was⌠breathtaking.
âDamnâŚâ he whispered under his breath as Black Fang blocked Kaedeâs strike but got hit by Chizuruâs guardian dogs, suffering a wound. But as if it never even registered in her brain, the woman kept fighting.
âFar too badass. Far too lethal. At first, when I heard her home was overrun and she called me for extraction, I thought she might not be as big of a deal as I expected⌠But now I know better. Kaede, Lilith and her Scarlet Lilies, and the elders of the Fujimori were simply too much to deal with. And, to be fair, only Raika and Orianna were defeated; Black Fang was greatly injured but could continue fighting. She probably only made a run for it because her disciples wouldâve been killedâwell, killed for good in Oriannaâs case. If not for them, I imagine she wouldâve kept on going.â
This was when a serene voice that carried a strong undercurrent of scolding in it could be heard coming from right next to him.
âProdigious Son, this humble mother-in-law speaks with respect when she says she thinks you could spend your time more wisely than watching that woman fight. Especially because this humble one hears you calling her names like âbombshellâŚâ Does the Prodigious Son realize that we women are more than beautiful flowers to ogle and wombs to carry his seed? Instead of watching new women, he should help his family kill their enemies.â
Quinlan smirked at the gorgeous moon elf whose usually serene tongue carried a lot of bite today.
âHeh. Graceful and tender elf? You? I canât believe I allowed myself to think such nonsense was true. You carry more bite than your cheeky daughter; youâre just too good at hiding it. But you are right, boiled dumpling mother-in-law of mine. Letâs go.â
