Chapter 1136: Warp Gate is a CheatFrom atop a writhing hill of stone and soil, Quinlanâs gaze stayed fixed on the chaos in the distance, taking it all in from his vantage point. The battlefield churned and boiled before him, yet his attention lingered on one specific point of interest: her.
Kaede Fujimori.
He had expected her to come charging the moment she spotted him. His head alone was worth a two-thousand-point bounty, probably more than every other target in the stronghold put together.
She could have roused her warriors into a frenzy by pointing them straight at him. It wouldâve been more than okay to even abandon the siege entirely. If she secured his bounty, then she would be far ahead of the competition for the duchy of Greenvale.
With Morgana and Lilith seemingly allied to the woman, she could hunt an Obsidion Circle Member or two and have already won.
Thatâs why she could send this giant army at him with her at the front, cutting through everything. Especially with her portal skills, she could probably appear right next to him unless her spell faced limitations he wasnât aware of.
And yet⌠she stood motionless. A lone figure framed by the sun, her blade sheathed, her posture still like a statueâs. Watching. Waiting.
Quinlanâs lips curved in a grim line. Strange. Too strange.
âJust what are you thinking, you weird womanâŚ?â
Before he could dig further into the thought, a voice slid into his mind.
Lucilleâs singsong tone carried that dangerous edge he knew too well. He didnât even pause to consider. His hand lifted, and a tear of blackness spread open in the air.
From the portal, Lucille burst through with blood dripping from her axe. Indeed, now that some of the strongest of the Fujimori vanguard rushed back to meet the sallying forces of Captain Rynne, the girls could finally do more than just deflect projectiles.
It was still a hit-and-run tactic, yes, as there were still many incredibly strong soldiers doing their best to protect their flanks, their supplies, their siege weapons. When one such soldier got too close, that was the time to dip.
But now they could begin getting some kills of their own while supporting the war machine formed by the joint effort of him and Sylvaris.
Beside Lucille came Vex, blade just as wet, if not more. Both women landed lightly with mad grins plastered on their faces.
Quinlan turned his head slightly.
Next to his standing form sat Sylvaris, Seraphielâs mother.
The moon elf resembled pure divinity even now, poised atop a throne he had sculpted from the earth itself. Her silver hair clung to her cheeks with sweat while her long lashes trembled from sheer effort.
The gorgeous and utterly serene elf sat with her eyes closed and chest that rose and fell evenly, even though her breathing was strained thanks to every ounce of her will being spent toward guiding the silver constructs where to aim and supplying their next barrage with her precious mana, which was depleting quickly.
Seeing her sight, Quinlan reached down to lay his hand on her shoulder. âIâll have to ask you to keep going for me just a little longer, mother-in-law.â
A serene smile touched Sylvarisâs lips. She did not open her eyes, but her words were firm, not showing any signs of trembling. âI had no intention of stopping, no matter what you said, Prodigious Son. My daughter and her friends are relying on me.â
Quinlan smiled at this stalwart mother and tightened his grip on her shoulder for just a moment in a silent gesture of support and gratitude.
Lucille twirled her axe as the hill shifted beneath her and vex, reshaping itself into a new moving platform of rock. Vex blew Quinlan a kiss while bright red eyes glittered with pure glee as she watched Sylvarisâs constructs form next to them again.
The three of them, his berserker, his witch, and his serene mother-in-law, made a great combo.
Ayameâs voice rang in his head.
Quinlan saw it as well; the glaive wielder with mad eyes kept the chase up even as most of his fellow high-level allies rushed to meet the sally attempt.
And just like this, the General missed his devastating strike, which cut the entire hill in half and even had enough strength to send a shockwave further out. But no blood was shed by his attack, as Ayame and Iris appeared next to Quinlan and Sylvaris.
âPhew, that was close,â Ayame sighed, watching the destruction of the hill she had stood on just a moment ago. âMy heart is thundering.â
The glaive-wielding General snapped his head their way.
Ayame gasped, âOh, he is coming.â
His veins bulged, his wild eyes locked on Quinlan, and he bellowed like a beast denied its prey. âARGGHHH!! What the fuck is this spell?! Iâll kill you!â
Mana flared violently around him before he spat a guttural chant, his body blurring as he launched into a mad sprint with terrifying speed. Dirt exploded in his wake as the ground itself broke apart under the sheer force of his steps. He looked less like a man and more like a rabid warhound.
Quinlan did not even blink. With Sylvaris still seated in deep concentration and too consumed to stand, he slid one arm under her knees, the other behind her back, lifting her effortlessly. As soon as the Generalâs distorted figure came within range, which only took a single second, the air in front of them split apart.
They vanished.
The Generalâs glaive slammed into the empty hill, shattering it in an eruption of dust and earth.
âWRAAAGHHH!!!â
His roar was savage, his entire body thrashing as he searched for them, frothing.
On the other side of the portal, the group stepped out onto fresh ground that soon rose to become a new watchtower of Quinlan. He set Sylvaris gently down.
Ayame leaned on her katana with her lips curling as she watched the General rage like a wild dog. âHe hasnât changed one bit since I last saw him. The elders and my father, as well, always hated his guts. They called him a mad dog who was too dangerous to those around him. I was always so scared to be in his presence; I mustâve trembled all the time.â
While Ayame was busy reminiscing, Iris wrinkled her nose. âWhy was I teamed up with her again?â
Ayameâs laughter rang bright. âI might not like your guts one bit, so much so that I would love to see your arrogant mouth humbled, dearest Iris, but I must admit that we have some synergy between the two of us. Iâm like a gorgeous, elegant, and beyond-skilled blademaster while youâre my rabid beast frothing at the mouth whose chain I unleash if I need some brute strength.â
ââŚâ Iris was about to snap when Quinlan chuckled as he shifted Sylvaris more comfortably against her newly formed earthen seat. He then looked at the raven-haired, gorgeous woman, âBecause you wanted to compete with her, no? What was it you said again? Ah, yes⌠âToday is the day I butcher the ugly slut.'â
Ayameâs laughter cut off instantly.
Irisâs eyes blinked with disbelief, having never expected him to betray her. Up until now, he was always so trustworthyâŚ
Quinlan only smiled in response, one that was wide and utterly unrepentant. The shine of his eyes told the woman all she needed to know. âWhat, you thought you could call my women names and not pay the price? Dearest Iris, thatâs not how the world works.â
But, instead of being shy about it, in the next moment, Iris scowled and spun back toward Ayame. âI donât care, I stand by what I said. Today is the day.â
Ayameâs glare deepened, the corner of her mouth twitching upward with lethal amusement. âItâs good to dream, but you should set yourself some realistic goals if you donât want to live a miserable life. Oh, wait, thatâs your specialty. I forgot.â
