Chapter 427: Chapter 427: The Method to See Through GhostsOn one side, Wan Yunrong and Miao Yu followed Wu Xiaonan, while Xu Huo and Chu Yuan were in charge of checking the corridors since there were so many rooms in the lab. Zhu Rumin could be hiding in any one of them.
Chu Yuan used chewing gum, which was actually a prop, to stick the illumination lamp on the ceiling of the corridor. "This way, if someone passes by, they might be exposed by their own shadow," he said.
Xu Huo did not express agreement or disagreement, simply cooperating with his actions.
"How did Gan Qing figure out that Zhu Rumin was the âghostâ?" asked Chu Yuan. "The five of us staying together couldnât tell."
"It might be because of the glass window," Xu Huo suggested. Last night, he and Chu Yuan had seen the Ghost Shadow through a window, whereas Gan Qing, who had chased Chang Chengyong out, just happened to stand behind the door, separated by a pane of glass.
"Whatâs the rationale behind that?" Chu Yuan said incredulously, "Do you have to be behind a glass window to see a ghost? Canât you see it even with glasses on?"
Xu Huo glanced at him. In fact, when the players were together, they simply couldnât see it.
"Then do you think what I saw yesterday was Chang Chengyong?" Chu Yuan couldnât help but say, "No, I need to ask Gan Qing what the ghost he saw looked like."
Before they could go to find Gan Qing, Gan Qing found them first, "Did you catch Zhu Rumin?"
"If we had caught her, we wouldnât be here," said Chu Yuan. "What about you?"
"Chang Chengyong ran too fast. I followed him around twice, and at last, I saw an elevator going down to the third basement level. I was afraid of a trap, so I didnât go down. When I turned my head back, Qiu Xiangdong was gone too," said Gan Qing. He shook his head after asking the others, realizing that
This was interesting. Judging from Chang Chengyongâs behavior, he knew early on that he was the âghostâ, hence why he fled out of guilt. Zhu Rumin, who was also a âghostâ, was caught off guard by Wu Xiaonan, and even if Gan Qing hadnât identified her, she still had to try to complete the task in her room according to earlier discussions; she couldnât escape either.
The fact that she didnât try to flee but instead returned with the group could suggest two scenarios: first, she didnât know she was the âghostâ, or second, she was confident that the trial method wouldnât reveal her identity as the âghostâ, and she couldnât clear the level anyway.
If it was the second scenario, then she was sure that capturing the âghostâ in the game wouldnât lead to clearing the level. Xu Huo had a suspicion, but it hadnât been confirmed yet.
The first scenario could also split into two possibilities: either the player randomly selected as the âghostâ wasnât aware of their status, or they were selected by someone else.
Gan Qingâs face held Xu Huoâs gaze for a few seconds. He opened the door beside him and looked out through the glass at the two people outside but saw no so-called Ghost Shadow.
"The âghostsâ are too few. If there were more âghostsâ today, it would be easy to verify whether you need to look through glass to see a âghostâ."
Ge Pan and the others returned without having found Zhu Rumin.
"I have some bad news," Gan Qing said, "Qiu Xiangdong has disappeared."
The players didnât have much affection for each other, but having someone disappear right under their noses made them feel anxious.
"How did you see through Zhu Ruminâs identity?" Ge Pan asked the same question.
Gan Qing repeated his explanation and added, "I donât understand why either."
After pondering for a moment, Ge Pan said, "It could be the glass."
"In some films and TV shows, ghosts that canât be seen directly by the naked eye can be captured with a camera. Maybe this game follows the same principle."
It sounded absurd, but it was the most plausible explanation they had at the moment.
"Since Chang Chengyong and Zhu Rumin have run away, the rest of us just have to wait until tomorrow to use glass to find the two new people whoâve turned into ghosts," Wan Yunrong said.
"Hopefully this time no one will just run away," Wu Xiaonan said.
"We were unprepared earlier," Ge Pan coughed and added, "That wonât happen tomorrow."
The group didnât go back to the room they had just left but instead chose a nearby room and stayed awake until the lights came on.
"The lights came on later than usual," Xu Huo noted as he checked his watch.
"The lighting here should be smart-controlled; it shouldnât be delayed. It might be that the lab itself had a special routine last night," Gan Qing explained.
The others didnât say much and left the room to search for the three missing people.
Two people stood at the ends of adjacent horizontal corridors to watch the common areas, while the rest entered the rooms in the same row to check.
After a thorough search that neither flushed out Zhu Rumin nor found Qiu Xiangdongâs body, they discovered the dead Chang Chengyong in the washroom.
Chang Chengyong had also died from suffocation.
The players reacted differently upon seeing his body.
Chang Chengyong must have been the one who drew the ghost card on the first day.
"If he ran, it means Peace Chunsheng wasnât killed by him; otherwise, he would have reverted to human status and wouldnât have needed to run today," Miao Yu said. "So it was another player who killed Peace Chunsheng. I didnât expect Chang Chengyong to have also suffocated to death."
Chu Yuan looked around at everyone, "Then was it Zhu Rumin who killed Chang Chengyong?"
"Not necessarily, there could be others," Ge Pan said.
"You mean Qiu Xiangdong?" Wan Yunrong asked, perplexed. "If it was him, why would he hide after killing Chang Chengyong?"
Killing a "ghost" should be considered acceptable behavior in the game.
"Itâs not necessarily him," Mao Wei interjected. "Last night, someone said that Chang Chengyong went to the third underground level."
All eyes turned to Gan Qing, who said irritably, "I only mentioned that I saw the elevator go to the third underground level; Iâm not sure if Chang Chengyong went down, and even if he did, couldnât he have come back up?"
"Besides, if I had killed Chang Chengyong, why would I hide it? He was supposed to be a ghost anyway!"
"Maybe youâre the ghost," Wu Xiaonan retorted. "If you killed Chang Chengyong, you could have turned back into a human, right?"
Gan Qing clenched his fists but relaxed them the next second, placing his hands behind his back.
"It wasnât him," Wan Yunrong spoke up at this moment. "He didnât go out for long last night, and it doesnât match the time Chang Chengyong died."
"You can tell with the naked eye?" Wu Xiaonan raised an eyebrow.
Normally, determining the exact time of death for a body required more detailed examination.
"Thatâs my special ability," Wan Yunrong claimed.
After a silent standoff between the two, Ge Pan said, "Then it still could be Qiu Xiangdong and Zhu Rumin. If one of them is a âhumanâ and the other a âghostâ, either of them could have killed Chang Chengyong, who drew the ghost card, without issue; yet theyâve chosen to hide."
"After all, having killed someone, they would face more suspicion upon returning. And if they turned into a ghost through the random selection, itâs likely they would become the target of everyone."
This could be considered a reason. Alternatively, both of them might be injured, and returning would make them the primary targets for the next player who became the "ghost."
Continuing the search with the same momentum, they searched the second floor after the first, and, surprisingly, still didnât find the two missing individuals.
"It seems they went to the third underground level. Are we going down?" Xu Huo prompted everyone at the right moment.
"Go down my ass!" Chu Yuan snapped. "If they donât want to come up, thatâs their problem. Iâll seal the elevator door and see how they manage to kill anyone!"
"It would be interesting if Qiu Xiangdong randomly became the ghost today," Wu Xiaonan said with a chuckle.
