When wandering over to the pheasant farm, Chen Yang happened across Heipi and his crew.
They looked exhausted, as if they had just come out of the mountains.
âHeipi, howâs the hunting been recently?
Snag any good game?â
Chen Yang asked with a smile.
Heipi saw Chen Yang and walked over carrying his hunting rifle.
âBetter not mention it, been in the mountains for two or three days, didnât even see a trace of big game, just caught some small stuff.â
Heipi said, his face full of displeasure.
Hearing this, Chen Yang glanced at the group of underlings behind him.
Almost all of the underlings were holding prey they had killed.
However, they were all small animals like rabbits and pheasants, small game that wouldnât earn much money.
âHehe, havenât they been constructing on the edge of the mountains, setting up a mining site?
Itâs normal for the larger animals to stay away with all that noise, things will settle down after a while.â
Chen Yang comforted him with a chuckle.
Heipi pulled out a pack of cigarettes from his pocket, took one out, and lit it for himself.
âSpeaking of the mining site, Chen Yang, thereâs something I want to discuss with you.â
Heipi took a deep drag and said.
âWhatâs up?â
âWell, a few days ago, you know, when you called a meeting for folks from all around to go work at the mine?
I was in the mountains with my brothers that day and we couldnât make it.â
âNow Iâm hoping you can help us out, see if you can get us in there too.â
Word about the mining site had spread all over the place recently.
Even though Heipi and his men were always roaming the mountains, they had heard the news.
Now that they happened to run into Chen Yang here today, he was hoping Chen Yang could look after them and get his group of men a spot too.
For Chen Yang, this was definitely no issue but he was a bit curious why Heipi, who was doing well as a hunter, would want to work in the mines.
So Chen Yang asked him outright.
âYou donât know?
Lately, game in the mountains has been getting harder to catch.
My brothers and I arenât getting any younger, and weâve got families to feed.
After giving it some thought, I realized we need a more stable job.â
Heipi explained.
âI see.â
After Heipi finished explaining, Chen Yang immediately nodded: âNo problem at all.
You guys are strong and hard-working, as long as youâre willing, Iâll make sure you get arranged.â
Seeing Chen Yang agree so readily, Heipi immediately expressed his thanks: âThen Iâll thank you in advance, Chen Yang.â
âThanks, Brother Yang!â
âAppreciate it, appreciate it!â
After Heipi expressed his thanks, his gang of underlings also hurried to show their gratitude.
Chen Yang casually told them not to mention it and made some more small talk before Heipi and his crew left.
They had been in the mountains for several days and just coming out now, they were eager to head back and get some good sleep.
After watching Heipiâs group leave, Chen Yang walked around the pheasant farm for a bit.
Seeing that the pheasants were doing well and looking plumper than ever, he felt reassured.
After leaving the pheasant farm, he casually locked the iron gate behind him and headed back.
He had just set foot in the entrance to the village when suddenly the phone in his pocket rang.
Chen Yang took it out to see it was Wu Kexin calling.
âWhatâs up, village chief?â
Chen Yang answered right away.
âAre you at home?â
Wu Kexin asked.
âIâm home, whatâs up?â
âThen come quickly to the village office.
Manager Gao just called, saying the mine is starting work tomorrow, and he wants us to tally up today all the people who want to work there, and also get the chefs arranged.â
Wu Kexin sounded somewhat urgent.
Upon hearing the mine was starting work, Chen Yang got excited instantly.
âAlright, alright, Iâll be right there.â
Chen Yang promptly agreed and then headed straight for the village department.
Upon reaching the village department, he saw Wu Kexin moving desks.
Moving them out from the village department building.
Seeing this, Chen Yang immediately went over to help.
âLet me do it, Village Head.â
Chen Yang took over from Wu Kexinâs hands.
Seeing Chen Yang arrive, Wu Kexin didnât stand on ceremony and handed the desk directly to him.
âVillage Head, arenât you supposed to be tallying numbers and arranging people to cook?
What are you moving desks for?â
Chen Yang asked curiously while moving the desk.
Wu Kexin dusted off her hands and said, âOf course, itâs for tallying numbers.â
âWith so many people from all around, I canât possibly go door-to-door to register them, can I?â
Upon hearing this, Chen Yang immediately understood what Wu Kexin meant.
She intended to set up a table at the entrance of the village department for people to come and register.
It was an efficient idea.
âSo thatâs it.â
Chen Yang nodded, then moved the desk to the designated spot.
Afterward, he helped Wu Kexin retrieve a stool from inside the village department building.
âWhat next, Village Head?
Do you need me to do anything else?â
After finishing these tasks, Chen Yang asked what was next.
Wu Kexin didnât answer him but went straight to the second floor and returned with two notebooks and two pens from the office there.
âNext, youâll sit here with me, waiting for those who want to work in the mine to come and register, then weâll make a record.â
Wu Kexin handed a notebook and a pen to Chen Yang.
Then she took a seat on the stool ahead of him.
Seeing this, Chen Yang immediately went inside to fetch another stool, and then sat down beside Kexin.
The notebook and pen were positioned in front of him, his back ramrod straight.
He looked quite like a veteran cadre.
Wu Kexin couldnât help but cover her mouth and chuckle when she saw Chen Yangâs posture.
âWhat are you laughing at?
Isnât this how office workers are supposed to sit?â
Chen Yang asked, puzzled.
Wu Kexin gave Chen Yang an incredulous look and laughed, âWho told you thatâs how all office workers sit?
Thatâs just a few of them; most sit normally, however theyâre comfortable.â
âAlright thenâŚâ
Chen Yang relaxed and sat naturally in the chair.
About ten minutes or so passed, and people gradually began to arrive at the village department to register.
But at this time, most of the ones registering were villagers from Liuhe Village.
Other villages were some distance from Liuhe Village, so it took a little longer for them to arrive.
Handling their own villagers, Chen Yang and Wu Kexin progressed quickly.
After all, they were both quite familiar with every household in the village.
Those who could work in the mine were arranged to do so; those who couldnât were all set up to cook.
Thus, it didnât take much time to nearly finish registering the situation in Liuhe Village.
Chen Yang had originally wanted most of the villagers from Liuhe to do the easier work, like cooking.
But everyoneâs desire to earn money was high.
Knowing that working as a miner paid more, many volunteered to work in the mines.
With such requests from everyone, Chen Yang naturally wouldnât refuse.
However, he did choose based on their strength; he agreed for the stronger aunties and for those weaker, Chen Yang would persuade them to stay and cook.
After almost all of Liuhe Village was registered, villagers from the other villages began arriving one after another.
Mostly aunties from Liuhe Village, while those from other villages were almost all burly men.
Each one robust, so Chen Yang and Wu Kexin decided to register all of them to work in the mine.
