Sophia’s eyes gleamed murderously as she discovered the method to counter that virus-like energy, every moment that corrosive disgusting energy ravaged through her insides, she felt a strange emotion invade her mind, finding out that it was the emotion of obsession from Axel, she used her own strongest emotion, and her strongest emotion….it was not hatred she felt at this moment, or the shock of betrayal.

Or the disgust towards the royal family of Suncrest.

But the possessiveness that always drove the core of her being. She thought of all the precious memories that brought forth the most amount of her twisted possession, for Tyler Cross, for Axel Nomrad.

And her dark desire of possessiveness rendered the effect of Axel’s demonic energy useless. At least within her body, the demonic energy could not affect her negatively as long as she was overflowing with that one emotion. Her burned skin healed, as her innate regeneration kicked in.

Her figure shot up into the sky, piercing through all the clouds and smoke, as she finally stopped holding back, using all of her strength and speed stats with no reservation. She only needed to be careful with her saint force reserves, as only about 30% of them remained after the fight with the Death Knight.

“Saint Art, Embrace of the All-Encompassing-Darkness.”

Sophia made a vertical slash as a wave of black energy shot out. Then it turned into the maw of a gigantic beast. In response to that attack, the demonic fire of Axel roared, and Axel delivered a cross-shaped attack. The demonic flames were unable to cut through the maws of the all-encompassing darkness.

Axel’s vision turned dark; darkness tried to encroach on him, like tiny ants biting on his skin. Trying to devour him, but that turned out to be useless as his demonic energy rendered those attempts immobile.

Finding himself drifting through the nothingness, he realized that he had been pulled into a mental illusion for a brief period, the effects of the Eye of Darkness, if he remembered it correctly. He blinked his monstrous demonic eyes.

The world from his viewpoint changed, seeing a scenery he expected to see, but did not want to see. He was sitting on a bench, a place between their homes and the school. The place that was both of their dearest, the place where they used to spend a lot of time with each other chatting, laughing, and smiling.

Letting out a heavy sigh, he looked to his right, and Sophia was sitting right beside him, holding his hand, looking at him in the eye, her eyes filled with heartache. Axel looked at her carefully, taking in the pink, vibrant hair, the red eyes, and an inhumanely beautiful face.

The one whom he desired with all of his heart. Sophia pleaded to him again, “Axel, please, just say that this was all a misunderstanding. We can forget all of this ever happened. Just let go, you don’t have to worry, I will take care of everything.”

“Just like I always have. Please trust me. Please…..”

Axel smiled sadly, taking in all of her existence with his sight, “Sorry, Sophia, but your cursed speech won’t work on me.”

He put his hand on her cheeks, rubbing his fingers, thinking how soft her cheeks had been back then, how vulnerable she was, back on earth, how innocent she had once been, now corrupted by age and memories and the brutality of 100,000 years and turned into an abomination.

But he loved all of her; it didn’t matter if she was a human, a monster, or an abomination.

Axel wiped the trickle of tears that dropped from her eyes. She embraced him tightly one last time, whispering in his ear, finalizing her broken heart and shattered resolution, shifting to the persona of the divine valkyrie she was supposed to be, the weapon of humanity, meant to cut down its enemies no matter what.

“Fine then… Since you leave me no choice, once all this is over…if we survive, I will turn you into my slave. I’ve had enough.”

Both of their figures, transformed into petals of a pink flower, the illusory reality shattered as Sophia made one last attempt to convince him. The final, hopeful effort– now failed.

Axel found himself back in his Demonic form, hovering in the skies, gripping the flaming sword in his hand. Sophia was only 30 meters away. Hovering at his exact height. This time, there was no adoration shown on any of their faces, only the cold and calculated desire to defeat their opponent.

VVVVVRRRRMMMM—KRRRSHHHHAAAOOOM!!!

Two massive sonic booms were heard simultaneously. As both of them vanished from their spots, the fabric of air particles stretched and ripped, unable to handle the power of the two monsters. Sophia’s two blades of darkness had turned into one long sword.

Consumed by an overwhelming amount of her saintly force emanating from her all-encompassing darkness, she appeared as a figure burning with shadowy flames of darkness. In contrast, the demon opposite her burned in red, demonic flames.

Swosh….

Bangg….

Both swords clashed in the middle, creating a shockwave powerful enough to make a vacuum in that point of space. They glared at each other. One was trying to save the other by destroying their very core of existence.

Kraaaaaaashhhhhhhh!

While Sophia was fighting for herself, to preserve herself, her own existence, even if it meant bringing doom to both of them, it was not merely a clash of two opposing forces, two opposing races, but the struggle of two wills who loved and cared for each other, in their own dark and twisted way.

Since Axel had lost his advantage, his demonic energy could not invade Sophia’s insides; she was back at her full strength and fighting him without holding back in the slightest. Like a machine of war who had been given human form, she rained down sword attacks after sword attack, relentless in her barrage, mostly if not entirely overpowering him in both technique and power.

It wasn’t that Axel was not good with wielding swords, but it was the fact that he was up against the single best martial combatant; more than that, she also overpowered him in terms of pure stats. Even with a 150% boost on his part and a 25% debuff on her, she still had 500 more stat points in each category of the primary stats than he did.

The only advantage he had was in terms of energy reserves; by now, she had probably less than 30% of her Saint Force remaining. Another advantage of his was the ability to use the concept of obsession imbued in his demonic energy.

But Axel held on with an iron will; countless gashes adorned his gray, demonic skin. Lava-like, red demonic blood flowed from his wounds, but they healed just moments after. He tried his best to hold on, using his energy sense as well as mutated runic eyes, both of which granted him a superior form of perception power than anyone else.

But Sophia was too skilled in combat, compensating with her strength and speed. Even if he knew a few milliseconds in advance which attack was incoming, Axel had no method to block multiple such strikes. The effect of the demonic flames remained minimal, barely effective against Sophia’s all-encompassing darkness.

Possession that fought against obsession was slowly marching towards its inevitable win—nothing to stop the monstrous prowess of the valkyrie. The sheer gap in their martial prowess, experience, efficiency, and talents was so significant that it was nothing less than despairing for the demon of obsession.

Overwhelmed by the endless barrage of sword attacks right on his face, Axel couldn’t realize anything. The sword of Sophia had pierced straight through Axel’s stomach.

Squelch…..

Cough…Agh….Kha….

Axel threw up a mouthful of blood, and a considerable amount of Sophia’s darkness now invaded his insides. Trying to cause a storm between two opposing forces, a struggling expression appeared on the face of the demon as he let out a pained grunt.

With a cold sneer, she announced victoriously, “You chose to become a demon to defeat me, but that was a wrong choice. Even with this debuff or your boost of power, no demon, no dragon, or any other race… on the face of this continent, could ever hope to stand on equal footing against me, in terms of individual prowess on a similar phase of power.”

“Axel… you never stood a chance.”

The demon’s pained expression vanished. Hearing that bold sentence, a bloody grin stretched across his face, as he admitted earnestly, “You’re right… I never stood a chance, especially not in terms of individual prowess.”

His smirk widened as he added, “But I never said I was alone, did I, Sophia???”

Squelch…..

Another flesh-piercing sound was heard at this moment, as the valkyrie saw that a giant sword had pierced through her back, creating a massive gaping wound. Her eyes flashed with recognition of the blade that pierced her.

Barely managing to turn her head, looking back, she looked on in disbelief, her eyes widened to the max, uttering the name of the one who stabbed her in the back, “Gareth????”
