Because of the rising tension throughout the borders of Suncrest, it seems the head of the Vex family, who was a 5th phase powerhouse, was ordered to be stationed in the borders of another region, the borders with the most significant amount of land near the minor kingdoms.
Not only that, but a few of the elders with the highest runecrafting ability were also called to the various borders to provide support with weapons. The king ordered the same thing to all prominent first-grade forces. It seems the tension was at an all-time high, and an all-out war with the minor kingdoms would erupt at any given moment.

Not only were two of the most talented young generation members of the Vex family killed in recent times, but many small attacks have been happening in many of their small facilities for the last few months, starting right after the academy massacre.
Now with most of the top powers having been deployed on the borders, being in charge of everything was a headache-inducing task for Balen. Though he had much confidence in the forces of his family accumulated over the years, and countless defensive rune formations built all around the most critical facilities, he didn’t worry that anything too bad could happen.
Especially with him so alert, as Balen had mobilized the many powerful seekers the Vex family had gathered over the years due to their unmatched runecrafting capabilities. Their most potent rune tools that could significantly increase the combat prowess of an individual Seeker were not up for sale; only the experts who served the family would receive those rune tools.
Balen, at this moment, was in the middle of a meeting with the remaining Elders of the family. They were discussing which bastard dared to target their powerful family. Some even said the family head might be thinking too much, making everyone so alert.
Though Talon’s death was indeed a shocking matter, it did not necessarily mean that the hidden killer or their forces would actually be able to do anything to the prominent family, filled with experts.
After a while, Balen dismissed them all, his face filled with annoyance as he muttered in displeasure, “These damn brainless old geezers. They have lost their minds. Do they think that the family head is a fool or something? Naturally, the family head has some clues that a dangerous force is indeed after our family. The death of Talon and Taser was merely their way of testing the waters.”

Balen looked to the side and said, “What do you think, Fanzo?”
The grim-looking muscular knight nodded without surrogating his words in the slightest, “Indeed, these Elders have become too senile. They underestimate the intuition of a 5th phase being. After staying in positions of power for so long, it’s easy to forget how disgustingly powerful experts from the other races are.”
Fanzo added after a moment of pause, “Besides, if you think about it from the perspective of your enemy, it’s quite natural for the ghost race or humans of minor kingdoms to target our Vex family and the Vanelis family sneakily. If a war occurs, these two supporting forces would be the maintaining pillar for the army of soldiers.”
Balen nodded with a grim expression. Fanzo said it all very straightforwardly, without being polite, though some may think of it as rude for a subordinate to speak boldly about the family elders. But Balen appreciated Fanzo’s honest gestures because every word he said was a bold truth that others in his family might not even dare to think about.

It was a bitter truth, he had to admit. Thus, with increased vigilance, he asked Fanzo one more time, “With the defenses we have already deployed, do you think it would be enough?”
Fanzo, at this moment, showed a bitter smile and said with some lingering hesitation, “If it’s the worst thing we are fearing, I’m afraid no amount of preparation would be enough.”
Balen’s face instantly blackened, “Do you always have to be so demotivating? If those damn old geezers are too optimistic, then you, on the other hand, are too pessimistic.”
Just as Balen was rebuking Fanzo in annoyance, a guard arrived in the empty meeting room with a map in hand, his face filled with worry as he spoke in haste, “Sir Balen, there’s emergency news.”
Balen’s expression turned serious. “Speak.”
“The westernmost underground hidden facility has been attacked, not only that, but three more of our most hidden research centers have also been attacked, simultaneously,” relayed the guard in one breath. Somewhat panicked.
Balen’s face sank instantly, “How??? How can that be? They are our few most hidden rune research facilities. How could they know of it?”
He slammed his hand on the table, almost making it crack. But as it was a rune artifact with self-repairing capacity, the crack receded slowly. But the rage and fear in Balen’s eyes did not disappear.
Balen shouted, “Hurry up and call the Guard leader.”
