Chapter 54 - Picnics and Plans

Betty and Viktor exchanged knowing glances as they sat on the porch of their home in Goodsprings, the sounds of children playing nearby mingling with the warm breeze. It had been a while since they had enjoyed a peaceful moment, yet the absence of their grandchildren was palpable.

Tanya, August, Levi, Mikasa, Sasha, and little Lambo had been spending more and more time with their parents, leaving the elderly couple feeling a bit neglected.

"It seems like our grandkids have forgotten about us."

Viktor mused, shaking his head with a chuckle.

"All they want to do is run around with their mom and dad."

Betty sighed, a playful smile crossing her lips.

"Well, can you blame them? Six and Rebecca are filled with tales of their adventures."

Viktor laughed, the sound rich and warm.

"I suppose they have. It's not that I mind them wanting to be with their parents, but I'd like to spend some time with them too. It feels like just yesterday they were all tiny babies in our arms."

"They'll come back around."

Betty reassured him.

"Once they tire out from all that excitement. Besides, we have to admit, it's nice to see Six and Rebecca so happy together. They've really built something special."

Viktor nodded in agreement.

"You're right. They've got a strong family bond, and that's what really matters. And who knows, maybe they'll bring the kids over later. We can have a big family dinner like old times."

Just then, they heard the unmistakable sound of laughter approaching. The children burst onto the porch, their faces lit with joy. Tanya was leading the way, followed closely by August, Levi, and Mikasa, with Sasha and Lambo trailing behind.

"Grandma! Grandpa!"

Tanya shouted, her little voice ringing with excitement.

Betty's heart swelled as she opened her arms wide.

"There they are! Come here, you little rascals!"

The children rushed forward, diving into their grandparents' embrace, bringing laughter and energy back into the house.

As the chaos of the children's chatter enveloped them, Viktor caught Betty's eye and smiled.

"Looks like we're not forgotten after all."

"No, indeed."

Betty replied, her heart full.

"This is exactly what we needed."

The warmth of family surrounded them, a reminder that despite the busy lives of their children and the wild adventures they all undertook, love would always bring them back together.

-Hours later-

Betty and Viktor exchanged glances, their expressions a mix of frustration and amusement as they watched their grandchildren play outside. Tanya, August, Sasha, and Lambo were all energetic bundles of joy, but their insistence on spending time with their parents made it challenging for the grandparents to have their own moments of bonding.

"Seems like we've been demoted to backup babysitters."

Viktor sighed, leaning back in his chair.

Betty chuckled, shaking her head.

"Well, they are all quite smitten with their parents. Six and Rebecca have been busy, to say the least."

Viktor smirked.

"Breeding like rabbits, you mean. It's a wonder they have time for anything else."

His eyes twinkled with mischief as he added.

"Maybe we should send them a notice: 'Your kids miss you!'"

Betty laughed, then grew serious.

"It's great they're so devoted, but I do miss those family game nights. We should find a way to get them to spend more time with us."

Viktor nodded, pondering the idea.

"Maybe we can plan a family day? A picnic, something outdoors where everyone can enjoy themselves and we can lure Six and Rebecca away from their... activities."

He raised an eyebrow, grinning slightly.

"Exactly! A day in the park, perhaps? We could set up some games, and maybe that would coax them out of the penthouse for a bit."

Betty's mind raced with possibilities, envisioning a day filled with laughter and games, where the family could reconnect.

As they strategized, the sounds of their grandchildren's laughter drifted into the room, reminding them of the joys and challenges of parenthood. It was a reminder that despite the busyness of their children's lives, the bonds of family remained strong and essential.

Betty and Viktor continued to discuss their plans, each idea accompanied by the joyous sounds of their grandchildren playing outside. The laughter echoed like a warm embrace, wrapping around them and momentarily pushing aside their frustrations.

"I can't help but think about how different things are now."

Betty mused, glancing out the window at the playful scene.

"When Six was younger, we didn't have half of this. We were always on edge, just trying to survive."

Viktor nodded, his expression thoughtful.

"True, but look at him now. He's building something incredible, and he has a family to protect. I couldn't be prouder."

He chuckled softly.

"Even if he does have a habit of getting into trouble."

"Just like his father."

Betty teased, poking his side playfully.

"Remember when you tried to build that crazy machine in the garage and ended up blowing a hole in the wall?"

Viktor laughed heartily, a glint of nostalgia in his eyes.

"Ah, yes! And I thought I could fix it before you noticed. I was young and foolish."

"More like reckless."

Betty replied, shaking her head.

"But it's those wild moments that make life worth living. Just look at our family now. All those trials brought us to this point."

As they watched the kids play tag, the siblings giggling and chasing one another, Betty felt a surge of warmth.

"We should make this picnic happen soon. I want them to know how much we love them, even if their parents are monopolizing all their time."

"Agreed. Let's gather supplies and make it special."

Viktor said, determination in his voice.

"It'll be a day to remember."

The couple stood, inspired, ready to put their plans into action. They gathered supplies from the pantry, packing sandwiches, snacks, and plenty of water. As they worked, the laughter of their grandchildren filled the room, reminding them that no matter how chaotic life became, family remained the heart of their world.

"Alright, let's do this."

Betty said, glancing at Viktor with a smile.

"We're going to show Six and Rebecca that family time is just as important as all those grand plans they have."

With their hearts full of love and excitement, they prepared to reclaim their day, ensuring that the bonds of the family would continue to grow and flourish amidst the adventures and challenges of the Mojave.

As Viktor and Betty were busy preparing for a family picnic, Tanya, ever the disciplined strategist, gathered her siblings in a circle for a serious meeting. Her stern face commanded attention, even from the more mischievous among them.

"Listen up, younger siblings!"

Tanya barked, sounding more like a military officer than a six-year-old.

"We have an important situation on our hands."

The other siblings—August, Levi, Mikasa, Sasha, and Lambo—stood around, waiting for Tanya to explain.

"At this moment, our parents are... well, they've locked themselves in their penthouse, and we all know what that means. Will have another sibling soon."

Her small face flushed slightly as she glanced toward the penthouse.

Mikasa, arms crossed, gave Tanya a cool nod, understanding completely. Levi simply shrugged, unbothered. August looked indifferent as always, more focused on the Power Armor and machinery.

But Sasha and Lambo, on the other hand, reacted quite differently.

Lambo's innocent voice piped up.

"Yay! Lambo is going to be an older brother! Now Lambo will have someone to boss around!"

He jumped up and down with excitement, clearly missing the more subtle points of the conversation.

Sasha, wearing her usual mischievous grin, rubbed her hands together.

"Oh great! While Mom and Dad are busy fucking, this is the perfect time to sneak into the food storage."

Her eyes sparkled with excitement.

"More for me! I'll finally get my hands on those hidden brahmin steaks."

August, who was listening quietly, shook his head.

"You shouldn't steal from the storage. Grandpa Viktor works hard to make sure we have enough food for everyone."

Sasha rolled her eyes.

"Relax, Auggie. It's not stealing if I leave some for later, right?"

Tanya sighed, clearly losing patience with Sasha's constant focus on food. But she wasn't about to get sidetracked. Tired of their antics, Tanya slammed her tiny fist onto the table, commanding everyone's attention again.

"Focus, Sasha. This isn't about your next stolen snack. While our parents are busy, we have responsibilities."

"What's 'fucking'?"

Lambo suddenly asked, his wide, innocent eyes blinking up at Tanya.

The room went silent. Tanya closed her eyes and sighed deeply, pinching the bridge of her nose as Lambo's innocent question echoed through the room. She hadn't exactly planned to give him "the talk" right now. Sasha, on the other hand, burst out laughing, clearly enjoying her little brother's confusion.

"Fucking is something adults do when they're... very close, like Mom and Dad are doing...its adult things."

Tanya explained stiffly in a matter-of-fact tone, glancing at the other siblings for support, clearly uninterested in diving any deeper into the subject. Levi and Mikasa avoided eye contact, both pretending to find something interesting about the ceiling. August kept his calm, serious expression, while Sasha snorted into her hands, barely containing her laughter.

"That's all you need to know for now, Lambo."

Lambo tilted his head, clearly not fully understanding but accepting it for the moment. He grinned wide.

"Okay! Lambo will just keep bossing around his new sibling when they come!"

His cheerful innocent excitement filled the room, making even Tanya crack a small smile.

Levi, leaning back with his arms crossed, raised an eyebrow.

"What exactly do you want us to do, Commander?"

Tanya straightened up, giving him a sharp look.

"First, we maintain order. We make sure the adults don't notice anything's off. No one mentions anything about their...activities."

She paused, her piercing gaze falling on Lambo.

"Especially you."

Lambo saluted with exaggerated seriousness.

"Lambo won't say anything, promise!"

"Good."

Tanya continued, satisfied.

"Second, we stick to our usual training. No slacking off. Just because they're distracted doesn't mean we get lazy."

Levi and Mikasa nodded in agreement, unfazed. August stayed silent but attentive as usual. Sasha, however rolled her eyes, already thinking about her next raid on the kitchen.

"Yeah, yeah. Just don't expect me to let the food sit there untouched."

"And finally."

Tanya concluded, crossing her arms,

"We keep an eye on things. If anything goes wrong, it's on you to report to me so I'll fix it with those in charge before the other notice. Got it?"

The siblings all nodded in various degrees of enthusiasm. Lambo giggled, clearly just excited to be part of any plan, while Sasha rubbed her hands together, muttering about her food mission.

"Good. Meeting adjourned."

Tanya said firmly, dismissing them all.

As the siblings dispersed going their separate ways, each with their own tasks or schemes, Sasha sneaking toward the kitchen, Levi and Mikasa heading off to train, and August keeping an eye on the Power Armors. Tanya couldn't help but feel a swell of pride of her little army.

Even if they were just kids, they were far from ordinary. And they were ready for anything—whether it was sneaking snacks, keeping order, or just dealing with the chaos that always seemed to follow their family. With their parents "occupied," it was up to them to hold the fort, and Tanya wouldn't let them fail.
