Chapter 65 - Dinky the Dinosaur

The Command Vehicle rumbled along the snow-covered highway as the sun dipped beneath the nuclear winter sky, casting a gloomy twilight over the landscape. Raul, keeping a sharp eye through the frosted windows, suddenly caught sight of movement up ahead.

His ghoul-keen senses tingled, with suspicion as a flicker of bodies shifted between the trees and rocky outcroppings near Ranger Station Charlie. Raul leaned forward from his seat, narrowing his eyes.

"Hold up."

Raul muttered, leaning closer to the window.

"Boss, we got company—Viper Raiders settin' up an ambush."

"Looks like those Vipers are itchin' to put some holes in us."

He muttered.

Six, calm and methodical, nodded and tapped a series of commands into the Command Center's control console. The onboard holographic map flickered to life, projecting a detailed, real-time display of the surrounding area.

The vehicle's systems synchronized with a network of Eyebots patrolling the region, giving Six a full picture of what lay ahead. Within moments, the map displayed the scene in real-time, showing several Viper raider groups moving into ambush positions along the narrow stretch of the highway.

Rebecca leaned over Six's shoulder, chewing on a piece of gum.

"Looks like they're tryin' to get cute. Thinkin' they got us pinned in."

The Eyebots zoomed across the snowy terrain, capturing detailed footage. The raiders had set up kill zones along choke points with crude barricades and were armed with a mix of assault rifles, pipe bombs, and energy weapons scavenged from old military depots.

The drone feed also revealed a large camp nearby, tucked within an abandoned cabin and surrounding cliffs, suggesting more reinforcements could arrive if they weren't dealt with swiftly.

Six tapped his chin thoughtfully.

"They're dug in good. But they don't know who they're messin' with."

Raul cracked his knuckles, his weathered face twisting into a grin.

"So, what's the plan, Boss? We roll through 'em, or we give these fools a little surprise?"

Six's mind raced through formulating a strategy. The crew, besides Raul, would take the fight to the ambush, hitting it hard before reinforcements could regroup.

Rebecca donned her modified X0-1 Knightmare power armor, wielding her Punisher with a devilish grin.

"Sounds like a blast. I got dibs on the first one dumb enough to pop their head out."

Six nodded, gripping the controls of the Command Vehicle.

"Raul, take the high ground with the Command Vehicle and pick off anyone who thinks they're clever. Let's clear these Vipers out for good."

As the convoy rolled forward, Six and crew launched their X0-1 Knightmare power armors with their landspinners into the fray, toward the raiders' flanks. The sound of gunfire and explosions—drawing part of the ambush force.

Meanwhile, the B1 Battle Droids disembarked from the side panels of the Command Vehicle. Their robotic voices echoed through the cold air:

"Roger, roger. Engaging hostiles."

The droids advanced on the raiders' camp positions, blasters lighting up the dark landscape. The Vipers—caught off guard—scrambled to return fire, only to be overwhelmed by a withering hail of plasma bolts.

From the turret hatch of the Command Vehicle, Rebecca opened fire, raking the barricade with her Minigun 50 Cal. rounds. Raiders screamed as they dove for cover, their ambush dissolving into chaos.

With the ambush collapsing, Raul pushed the Command Vehicle forward, crashing through the barricades with the attached snow plow.

"Raul, you're up."

Six called over the comms.

Raul positioned the Command Vehicle on the ridge overlooking the Viper camp, picking off key targets with the turrets. One by one, the Viper guards fell, their bodies crumpling in the snow before they could raise the alarm.

Rebecca jumped from the moving vehicle, charging toward the camp with her Punisher blazing.

"Surprise, jerks!"

She shouted gleefully, dropping the first raider with a point-blank blast.

Six followed close behind, plasma rifle in hand, firing precise bursts at any raider foolish enough to stand in their way. The remaining B1 droids flanked the camp, storming the ranger cabin and clearing out the Viper reinforcements.

Within minutes, the Viper camp was reduced to smoldering ruins. The few remaining raiders either lay dead or had fled into the wilderness. Six inspected the aftermath, collecting weapons, supplies, and armor, which were quickly stored in the dimensional inventory.

Among the loot, they found maps and encrypted data logs, potentially pointing toward other Viper outposts in the Mojave.

The freed hostages—grateful but half-frozen—were offered supplies and transportation to Wolfhorn Ranch. Some accepted, while others took their chances on the highway.

Rebecca dusted snow off her jacket, her breath visible in the cold air.

"Not bad. But next time, let me take out more of 'em."

Six chuckled.

"We'll find you another fight soon enough."

With the Vipers neutralized and the road clear, the convoy pressed on toward Ranger Station Charlie. The nuclear winter winds howled, but their spirits remained high. This was just another step in their journey—and with every threat dealt with, they were one step closer to reclaiming the Mojave.

As the Command Vehicle rumbled forward, Raul gave a satisfied nod, lighting a cigarette.

"Y'know, boss... If we keep this up, the Mojave's gonna start lookin' downright friendly again."

Six grinned.

"Friendly enough to take over."

Rebecca, leaning back in her seat, gave a playful smirk.

"I call dibs on running the bar."

And with that, they disappeared into the snowy wasteland, leaving behind nothing but scorched ruins and broken raiders.

Continuing their journey, Six made Raul passed Ranger Station Charlie and arrived at Novac. Rebecca jumped out like an over-hyperactive child who had just consumed sugar.

"Wow, that's a giant dinosaur."

Cassidy chuckled and informed Rebecca,

"It's also a store and a sniper's nest."

"We need to get one of those too, big guy."

"Rebecca, you've already had me build a statue of you in Goodsprings... I'm not constructing your squad until you have your own caps for it."

Said Six crossing his arm

Rebecca pouted dramatically, crossing her arms and turning away in mock indignation.

"Boo! Cheep steak... You're no fun."

She huffed.

Raul, who was leaning on his rifle with a bemused grin, chuckled. "

You two remind me of an old married couple—oh wait, youareone."

Rebecca shot him a playful glare.

"Watch it, grandpa. I'll sick the Command vehicle on you."

Six smirked and gave her a teasing nudge.

"Don't threaten him unless you're ready to back it up."

Before Rebecca could retort, Cassidy waved them over toward the dinosaur's entrance.

"Let's get inside and see if Dinky's store has anything worth buying—unless y'all just came to sightsee."

They followed her intoDino Bite, where a wiry man with an eye patch named Cliff Briscoe greeted them.

"Welcome! Looking for a souvenir? Maybe a toy T-Rex for the lady here?"

He gave Rebecca a friendly smile.

Her eyes lit up.

"Absolutely!"

She immediately grabbed one from the shelf, hugging it like a prized treasure.

Six gave her an amused look.

"I thought you wanted the real thing."

Rebecca hugged the tiny dino tighter, grinning ear to ear.

"I'll start small and work my way up."

Raul snorted.

"It's good to have goals, kid."

Meanwhile, Six's eyes scanned the shop, looking for anything useful. His gaze landed on Cliff.

"You wouldn't happen to have any unique weapons for sale, would you?"

Cliff perked up.

"Funny you ask—just got my hands on aService Rifleused by NCR boys, but if you're looking for something special, Manny upstairs might know. He runs sniper duty in the mouth of the dino."

Rebecca was already halfway to the staircase before anyone could say anything.

"Let's go meet him! Maybe he'll sell me his gun, too!"

Six sighed.

"You've got your hands full."

Raul muttered with a grin.

Six gave a weary nod, following after his wife.

"You have no idea."

As they climbed the creaky staircase, the sounds of the bustling store faded, replaced by the quiet ambiance of the dinosaur's interior. The mouth of the giant dinosaur opened up to a vantage point overlooking the road ahead, where the late afternoon sun cast long shadows over the wasteland.

Manny Vargas was perched in the mouth of Dinky the Dinosaur, scanning the horizon with aHunting Rifleresting against his shoulder. His bandana was pulled down just enough to reveal a rugged face adorned with a slight smirk as they approached.

"Well, if it isn't a couple of travelers."

He called out, lowering his rifle.

"What brings you to my perch?"

Rebecca practically bounced on her toes.

"We heard you might have something special for sale! Like, I don't know, a cool sniper rifle or something?"

Manny raised an eyebrow, clearly amused.

"Got a taste for the big guns, do ya? Well, I might have something that tickles your fancy."

He gestured to a worn case beside him, opening it to reveal a sleek, customized sniper rifle with a matte black finish and a scope glinting in the light.

Six stepped closer, his interest piqued.

"What's the story behind that one?"

Manny's eyes sparkled with pride.

"This beauty used to belong to a legendary sniper in the NCR—one of the best. It's been modified to improve accuracy and has a silencer for those stealthy shots. But it's not cheap."

Rebecca leaned over the case, her eyes wide with excitement.

"How much?"

"About 5,000 caps."

Manny replied casually, watching her reaction.

Rebecca's excitement faltered momentarily.

"Five thousand?! I don't even have half that!"

Six crossed his arms, contemplating.

"And you have plans for that statue of yourself, right?"

He couldn't help but tease her again.

She shot him a glare, but her expression softened into a playful grin.

"Okay, okay, I'll work on that later. But I want that rifle, and I will find a way!"

Raul leaned against the wall, chuckling.

"You'd better start scavenging. Or get good at poker."

Manny folded his arms, leaning back.

"I hear the casinos in New Vegas have some high-stakes games. Might be worth checking out."

Rebecca's eyes lit up.

"New Vegas, huh? I've always wanted to see the Strip!"

She glanced at Six, her enthusiasm infectious.

"What do you say, big guy? Let's go win some caps!"

Six sighed but couldn't hide his smile.

"Alright, let's go to New Vegas, but we're coming back for that rifle."

Manny nodded, clearly amused by the couple's banter.

"You better get a good plan together, then. New Vegas can chew you up and spit you out if you're not careful."

"Don't worry."

Raul said, straightening up.

"We've faced worse than a city full of gamblers. Besides, we'll keep an eye on her."

With a playful wink at Rebecca, he turned back to Manny.

"Thanks for the tip. We'll be back for that rifle."

As they descended the stairs, Rebecca bounced with energy.

"I can't wait! New Vegas is going to be amazing!"

Six chuckled softly.

"Just try not to spend all our caps at once."

"I make no promises!"

She replied cheerfully, leading the way out of the store with Raul and Six close behind.

Before stepping outside, Six turned back to Manny with a sly grin.

"You know what? I'll take that sniper rifle after all."

Manny's eyebrows shot up in surprise.

"Really? Just like that?"

"Yeah."

Six said, trying to sound casual.

"You got a deal?"

"Sure thing! Just give me a moment to wrap it up."

Manny replied, clearly impressed by the sudden change of heart.

As Manny busied himself securing the rifle, Six glanced over his shoulder to make sure Rebecca was still exploring the dinosaur's tail end, blissfully unaware of his plans. He couldn't help but smile at how excited she was; he wanted to keep that energy alive for as long as possible.

Once Manny handed over the rifle, Six slipped it into his pack, careful to hide it from Rebecca's view.

"Thanks, Manny. I'll keep it quiet for now."

He said, giving him a knowing nod.

"Just make sure she doesn't start looking for it too soon."

Manny replied, chuckling.

"That enthusiasm of hers is hard to miss."

With a final wave, Six headed back outside to join Raul and Rebecca, who was now examining a neon T-Rex souvenir.

"What did you buy?"

She asked, eyes narrowing suspiciously as he approached.

"Just some ammo."

He lied smoothly, hoping she would buy it.

"You know how it is out here."

"Boo! Lame!"

she retorted, rolling her eyes.

"I thought you'd get something cooler than that."

Six fought back a grin.

"You'll just have to wait and see what I have in store for you."

Rebecca's curiosity was piqued, but she quickly shrugged it off.

"Fine! Let's hit the road! I'm ready to see New Vegas!"

Raul chuckled as they made their way to the battle bus, a feeling of excitement swelling among them. As they climbed aboard, Six couldn't shake the satisfaction of having snagged the rifle as a surprise for Rebecca—a perfect present for when the time was right.

"Let's roll!"

He called out, starting up the engine. The sound roared to life, drowning out any lingering doubts as they set off toward the shimmering lights of New Vegas.
