Chapter 69 - Nightkin

Hours passed, and the night deepened. Around midnight, the brahmin began to stir, their hooves stomping against the dirt. A soft, eerie wind brushed through the pen.

Suddenly, ED-E let out a quiet warning beep, and Six saw it: a shimmer in the air, like heat waves distorting the space around it. Boone's grip on his rifle tightened.

"There."

He whispered, eyes locked on the distortion.

Then, as if out of thin air, a massive figure materialized—a Nightkin. Its dark blue skin gleamed under the moonlight, and it clutched a bloody bumper sword in one hand, dragging it behind like a predator ready to strike. In the other hand, it wielded a minigun, the barrels already spinning slowly, eager to spit death.

The creature lunged toward one of the brahmin, its sword slicing through the air in a brutal arc. The animal's head hit the ground with a dull thud, and the Nightkin snarled, preparing to slaughter the rest.

"Now!"

Six shouted.

Boone's rifle barked first. The bullet hit the Nightkin square in the chest, staggering it for a moment but not dropping it. The creature growled in fury, its red eyes flicking around, trying to pinpoint the source of the shot.

Rebecca's Punisher spun to life with a deafening roar. The .50 caliber rounds tore through the air, peppering the Nightkin's body. One shot struck its jaw, ripping off the lower half of its face in a spray of blood and shattered bone. But even that wasn't enough to stop it.

Raul grinned.

"That's one ugly bastard."

The Nightkin stumbled but recovered quickly, roaring in rage. It raised its own minigun, but Boone fired again, this time aiming for the head.

The bullet pierced the creature's skull, staggering it once more. It swayed, disoriented, as Rebecca let loose another barrage. The bullets shredded its torso, sending it crashing to the ground in a heap.

The dust settled, and all that remained was the lifeless body of the mutant. The faint whir of ED-E's sensors cut through the silence. Boone lowered his rifle, scanning for any additional threats.

"It's down."

Six approached the corpse, nudging it with the tip of his boot.

"These things are tougher than I thought."

He muttered.

"It's not just about hitting them. You have to knowwhereto hit."

Rebecca yanked the smoking Punisher from her hip, flashing a grin.

"That waswaymore fucking dangerous than I thought it'd be, chooms."

"But, See? Told you I could handle it."

Raul chuckled.

"Remind me never to get on your bad side, chica."

Dusty McBride opened the door cautiously, shotgun in hand, but quickly lowered it when he saw the lifeless body of the Nightkin in the pen.

"You... you actually got it."

Dusty whispered his voice a mix of relief and astonishment.

Alice clutched her husband's arm, tears in her eyes.

"We don't know how to thank you. That thing killed half our brahmin. If it weren't for you, that thing would've taken everything. I didn't think anyone could stop it."

She looked over at Rebecca's massive cross-shaped weapon with something approaching awe.

"You must be the toughest folks I've ever met."

"Just another day."

Rebecca replied, nonchalantly brushing dirt off her weapon.

Six gave a small nod.

"Just glad we could help."

As the Nightkin's mutilated body slumped to the ground, they stood in the cool clouded night air, Six couldn't help but feel a gnawing sense of unease.

The Nightkin was dead, the beast's blue skin streaked with blood and bullet holes, but it had taken far more punishment than any ordinary enemy should have. Its lifeless, disfigured face, now missing a jaw, was a grim reminder of how dangerous these mutants were. But this was only the beginning. If there were more of these creatures at REPCONN, they'd need better weapons, more planning, and a hell of a lot of luck to make it through alive.

Raul gave a low whistle.

"Damn thing almost made me shit myself. Almost."

He nudged the creature's massive bumper sword with his boot.

"Ugly bastard could've taken out the whole town if we hadn't been here."

Boone knelt beside the corpse, inspecting it for any remaining threat.

"We'll run into more of these at REPCONN, won't we Six."

His tone was flat, but Six knew Boone well enough to catch the unease beneath it.

"We had trouble with just one. There'll be dozens out there."

Boone glanced at the crew, who gave a silent nod of understanding. They were heading into dangerous territory—and if they weren't careful, they might not come back.

Six holstered his weapons, jaw tight with thought. Boone wasn't wrong—the Nightkin were nothing like the rabid, mindless ghouls they had prepared for. If this creature's toughness was any indication, they'd need to bring theirvery bestgear to REPCONN. And even then, it was going to be brutal.

He crouched next to the beast, observing the cracked skin and oversized muscles.Invisible super mutants that hit like Deathclaws. This world really has it out for us.

As Six stood under the quiet cloud-covered night sky, the adrenaline slowly fading, he allowed himself a moment of satisfaction. For now, the McBrides' brahmin were safe, and that was a victory for Six. In the Mojave, sometimes that was enough.

Dusty shook Six's hand, the grip firm and grateful.

"We don't got much to offer, but if you ever need anything—anything at all—you let us know."

Alice gave Rebecca a quick hug.

"You saved us tonight, all of you."

She smiled warmly, though the exhaustion in her eyes was clear.

"If you hadn't come, I don't know what we would've done."

Raul tipped his hat with a grin.

"Well, if it means we don't have to babysit more of those big fellas anytime soon, I'll call it a win."

Boone remained silent, his gaze lingering on the dead Nightkin. He didn't say much, but Six knew what was going through his mind. One less monster out here, but there were always more. And every step forward meant getting closer to dealing with the ones at the REPCONN Test Site.

Dusty shook his head.

"I can't thank you enough. If it had taken the rest of the herd, we'd be done for. This whole town would've been in trouble without the milk and meat."

Six gave a curt nod.

"Glad we could help. But listen, this is bigger than just a few dead brahmin."

He gestured toward the carcass.

"There are more of these things holed up at the REPCONN Test Site, and they won't stay there forever. If they start wandering out, places like Novac won't stand a chance."

Dusty's expression darkened.

"You're saying this ain't over?"

Boone spoke up, voice low and grim.

"Not by a long shot. If we're going to clear them out, we'll need better equipment and backup."

Alice clutched her husband's arm, her face pale.

"You really think they'll come back?"

"Hope for the best, plan for the worst."

Six said simply.

Rebecca slung her Punisher over her shoulder and turned to Six with a smirk.

"Why are you scaring the old loving couple, big guy? That wasn't so bad. Just a little mutant problem."

Six chuckled, shaking his head.

"If that waslittle, I'd hate to see what big looks like to you."

The group shared a rare moment of levity, the tension finally breaking. But as they walked back toward Novac, Six's mind was already turning toward what lay ahead—more Nightkin, more dangers, and bigger battles to come.

Back in the War bus, the crew gathered around the holographic table. Six leaned back in a chair, his mind racing through strategies.

"We can't just roll into REPCONN and start shooting. We need to know what we're dealing with—numbers, layout, choke points, everything."

"Agreed."

Boone said.

"We can't afford surprises, not with more of those invisible bastards waiting."

Rebecca popped a bubblegum bubble, sitting cross-legged on the table.

"Maybe we let 'em come to us. They get cocky, wander into the open... we light them up."

Raul chuckled.

"Smart. But what if theydon'twander into the open? What if they stick to their hidey-holes like cockroaches?"

Six drummed his fingers on the table, thinking.

"ED-E can scout ahead—stealth field and all. We'll need all the recon we can get."

Boone grunted in approval.

"I'll check my ammo and switch to armor-piercing rounds. Regular bullets won't cut it."

Rebecca grinned.

"I'll bring thePunisheragain. Those freaks won't know what hit 'em."

Raul gave her a sidelong glance.

"You sure that's a good idea, chica? What if there's a whole pack of them?"

Rebecca's grin widened.

"Then I just hold down the trigger longer, choom."

Six stood and looked over his crew.

"We'll rest up here tonight. Tomorrow, we gear up and move out for REPCONN."

He glanced at the Nightkin corpse he brought to dissect to figure out their weaknesses.

"Whatever's waiting for us there... we hit it hard and fast. No mistakes."

Boone nodded, expression as unreadable as ever.

"We finish this."

Raul sighed, stretching his arms.

"Guess I'm not retiring any time soon."

Rebecca smirked.

"We didn't bring you so you could retire, old man."

Six shot her a warning look, though he couldn't help but smirk.

"Alright, let's get some sleep. We've got a long day ahead."

Later that night, as they bunked down in the War bus rooms, Six found himself staring at the ceiling, mind racing. The Nightkin had reminded him just how fragile life was out here. A mistake, a misstep, and everything could end in an instant. He knew he couldn't afford to lose anyone—not Rebecca, not Boone, not Raul, or his children.

This mission would be the hardest one yet. And if they failed, it wouldn't just be their lives on the line—it'd be the future of every town in the Mojave.

Six closed his eyes and exhaled deeply, forcing himself to relax. One battle at a time. Get through REPCONN first... then figure out the rest.

For now, though, he allowed himself a moment of peace. They'd won tonight. And in the Mojave, sometimes a small victory was all you could ask for.
