Chapter 44: Chapter 42: It’s Just That I’m NotMaya glanced at Hannah, took a deep breath, rolled her eyes at her, and headed towards her room.

She heard the man tapping Liam’s shoulder saying, "You’re getting handsomer, kid! Must be breaking a lot of hearts!"

Maya listened to the man’s voice and thought, if only that were true, she spent all day talking but didn’t manage to take him out to break hearts.

"Maya, this is your eldest sister’s fiancé, come over and say hello." Old Master Spencer stopped Maya as she headed back to her room alone.

In the Spencer Family, Maya never tries to steal the show. She knows precisely when she can appear and when she absolutely can’t. Right now, with distinguished guests present, she should be invisible, yet unexpectedly, her father called her over.

Since someone invited her, what’s the harm in going to greet the ’benefactor’?

So she turned around and headed to the living room.

When she stopped in front of the guest, she stared at him for a moment with her big eyes, then bent down at a 90-degree angle, respectfully saying, "Hello, brother-in-law!"

Her calling him brother-in-law made Jane Spencer ecstatic; she thought, this little rascal has such a sweet mouth. She smiled and said, "Maya, it’s too early to call him brother-in-law."

"Haha! Not early at all!"

The man saw Maya’s obedient appearance and couldn’t help recalling her rudeness on the overpass; she seemed completely different.

He scrutinized her and asked, "Maya? How come I didn’t see you at the banquet a few days ago?"

"I’m an illegitimate child, not allowed to attend." Maya was straightforward.

Just as she spoke, half the family’s faces turned sour. Liam glanced at her, knowing she was in a bad mood, angry about not feeling any familial warmth in the Spencer Family, angry that everyone bullied her and didn’t see her as family.

Of course, that included him; she tried to be nice to him, yet he ignored her.

Actually, he did somewhat regard her; at least now, neither in the Spencer Family nor at school, anyone dared to bully her.

Hannah watched Maya self-destruct, feeling gleeful inside, thinking, this little demon, sometimes her miserable appearance is really satisfying.

"Maya, happy birthday in advance!" To break the awkwardness, Jane Spencer handed the birthday gift from the coffee table to Maya early.

"Thank you, big sister." Maya accepted the birthday gift, smiling and expressing gratitude.

Seeing this, Hannah immediately pulled Elia Spencer upstairs to fetch the gift she had prepared and delivered it downstairs to Maya.

She initially didn’t want to buy a gift for the little demon, but since the little demon was favored lately, she had no choice but to prepare one, and she prepared well. She gifted Maya a watch, Cartier’s latest model! With Old Master Spencer present today, she naturally sought to impress.

Maya looked at the gift bag handed by Hannah, noted the Cartier logo, and slightly curled her lips, thinking, Aunt Hannah really spent heavily today!

Even both grandpa and dad had given her big red envelopes today, but someone was empty-handed, offering nothing, leaving Maya a bit displeased.

Because at home, the gift she most anticipated was from her principal brother’s, yet there was none.

Hence, until she attended tutoring in the evening, she was sulking.

At her desk, she wore an unhappy face, propping her legs up, staring wherever Liam moved.

Though he didn’t consider her family, everyone maintained appearances, and yet he didn’t, openly dismissing her as a sister.

Maya’s displeasure was obvious; someone could sense it even with their toes, so he casually said, "Happy birthday!"

"There’s no sincerity at all; even Aunt Hannah gave a watch, but you offered nothing."

"Maya, you need to understand, if it weren’t for me, you wouldn’t receive any gifts."

Maya was stumped by his words; he was right, if it weren’t for him, no one would show her courtesy or give her presents. During New Year, everyone gifted Elia Spencer, only second uncle gave her a red envelope.

"Take a day off; go down and sleep."

"Grandpa hasn’t left, I can’t go down."

"Do you know Lillian Morris?"

"Last time on the overpass, he escorted me down, not really acquainted."

"Maya, that’s Jane Spencer’s fiancé."

Listening to Liam’s reminder, Maya exploded, immediately standing up from her chair, questioning him, "What do you mean? You think I’d seduce my brother-in-law?"

"But haven’t you tried seducing your own brother?"

"Bang!" Maya grabbed a textbook and threw it at the man; why does he always misinterpret her intentions?

Liam dodged swiftly, avoiding the hit.

Maya watched his nonchalant attitude, feeling aggrieved, fiercely kicked the desk and complained, "You’re all a family except me; you guard against me like I’m a thief. What have I ever done to you?"

This question, Maya wanted to ask everyone, what had she ever done to them? Why does everyone dislike her, even the father who birthed her doesn’t like her?

If only she knew then, why wasn’t she shot onto a wall back then, why was she brought into this world?

"I just want to tell you, Sister Jane Spencer isn’t Elia Spencer, better stay away from Lillian Morris."

In a hazy moment, Maya seemed to perceive this man meant well, but how could that be possible? He’s surely just protecting his own sister, those words he told her are just nonsense.

"Hmph!" Maya watched the man’s back as he walked towards the bedroom, snorted at him, angrily cursed, "Cheapskate."

"Have fun yourself; I’m going to sleep."

Due to the commotion Maya caused last night, he couldn’t even open his eyes, only wanting to collapse on the bed for a deep sleep.

As Maya watched his back, she rolled her eyes at him, slumping over her desk, motionless.

But as she lay there, she grew increasingly upset; tomorrow is both her birthday and her mother’s death day; she hated that murderer deeply. Why turn a celebratory day into a mournful one, why rob her mother’s life on her birthday?

Liam awoke and heard sobbing from the study. He walked in and saw Maya curled up on the chair in front of the desk, clutching her knees, quietly crying.
