Inside the car, Liam Spencer finished the call, feeling like heād just fought a battle. He had never been this exhausted, his whole body trembling, even his heart was quivering. In November, S City was still quite cold. He wondered if Maya Spencer had caught a cold already, if she was crying, if sheād been frightened into a panic attack.
Just the thought of Maya Spencer made Liam Spencerās body tremble even more intensely.
Eventually, he pulled over to the roadside to take a brief rest.
Maya Spencer hadnāt been rescued yet; he couldnāt afford to fall apart, nor did he dare.
Meanwhile, in the pitch-black warehouse, Maya Spencer awoke from unconsciousness.
She was disheartened to find that upon waking, the nauseating smell of mixed gasoline and diesel hadnāt dissipated. Her mouth was taped shut once again, and her body was bound to the chair without the ability to move.
"Mm... Mm..." Maya Spencer made two nasal noises, trying to call for Arthur River and have him turn on the light.
She was terrified, afraid of being trapped in such a vast, dark warehouse, and she was so cold, shivering, with her head throbbing painfully.
Maya Spencer knew she had a fever; her body was reporting back that it couldnāt take such a dreadful environment and was nearing its limit.
After calling out a few more times, there was still no response in the warehouse, only her own echo.
"Sob sob sob..." Suddenly, Maya Spencer started to cry. She was so scared, she missed Liam Spencer so much, she wanted to get out quickly, and no longer wanted to be tied up.
However, her cries didnāt draw Arthur River out, and not until the sky gradually brightened did she squint, looking outside through the open skylight atop the warehouse.
She saw gray clouds, saw the sky wasnāt bright enough yet. She had never closely observed the morning sky, yet now found it infinitely beautiful, making her yearn to be closer.
But the faint light also seemed glaring and uncomfortable.
She looked up at the outside for a while, feeling miserable, her throat sore, her head growing heavier, making her utterly exhausted.
So before the sun came up, she fainted again.
In her dream, she dreamt of playing around with Liam Spencer, dreamt of picnicking on a green lawn, dreamt that while sleeping in a tent, a gust of wind blew through making her chilly, instinctively burrowing deeper into Liam Spencerās embrace.
Later, she dreamt of a storm, the wind blowing the tent away, rain unapologetically drenching her and Liam Spencer, as if someone were dumping water on them with buckets.
Though Liam Spencer held her tightly in his arms, she was still soaked by the rain, drenched from head to toe, shivering with cold.
"Maya Spencer, wake up," she then heard Arthur Riverās voice, his angry shouts directed at her.
She struggled to open her eyes and saw Arthur River holding a basin of cold water over her, making her bones feel chillfully cold.
Maya Spencer laboriously lifted her head, forcing her eyes open to stare at Arthur River intently, as if to tell him that she was awake and to stop splashing her with cold water.
Arthur River saw that Maya Spencer was awake, so he tossed the basin aside, untying the rope from the pillar and then the rope binding her to the chair.
Only then did Maya Spencer realize that after fainting yesterday, she had been tied to a pillar again.
When Arthur River lifted her from the chair, her legs were so numb she couldnāt stand, collapsing onto the floor with a thud.
Seeing this, Arthur River immediately grabbed Maya Spencer by the hair and dragged her up from the ground, scolding, "Donāt waste my time, or Iāll leave you to die here."
From his words, Maya Spencer could tell that he intended to take her somewhere, and she pretty much guessed where.
After receiving that video yesterday, Liam Spencer must have gone to see their uncle, and the two surely set up a trap for Arthur River, making him go to the airport for a hostage exchange, so Arthur River was taking her to the airport now.
Maya Spencer couldnāt imagine what kind of nightmare last night must have been for Liam Spencer; how heād react upon seeing her distress video, whether heād be driven to madness.
She took a deep breath, and while being dragged by Arthur River, she stumbled and fell again.
At this moment, Maya Spencer was sore and weak, unable to muster any strengthāeven walking was difficult. Her legs, tied up all night, had lost sensation, her head felt unbearably heavy, and her vision was blurred.
Seeing her fall again, the man thought Maya Spencer was deliberately defying him and angrily kicked her leg with his right foot.
Though he promised Aron Hanson he wouldnāt hit Maya Spencer anymore, almost going mad, how could he possibly keep such a promise? His words to Aron Hanson were merely perfunctory.
The manās shoes were heavy and solid, and when he kicked Maya Spencer, she felt her bones crack, hurting so much that tears burst from her eyes, curling up on the ground, clutching her leg motionlessly.
Seeing her not getting up, Arthur River squatted down immediately and harshly tugged her hair in warning, "Maya Spencer, do you still think youāre the Hanson Familyās young lady? Do you expect me to listen to you now? Are you moving or do you want me to break your leg?"
Upon hearing his warning, Maya Spencer placed her hands on the ground and slowly climbed up, wanting to tell him it wasnāt that she didnāt want to move, but that her body couldnāt sustain her, hoping heād give her some time to recover.
But her mouth was taped shut, unable to utter a sound, so she could only endure the discomfort and limpingly follow him.
Every step made Maya Spencer feel like she was stepping on cotton, ready to fall at any moment.
Fearing that if she fell again, the man might resort to violence, she summoned 200% of her willpower, painstakingly taking one step at a time, exhausting all her energy to walk out of the warehouse.
She believed that if Liam Spencer saw her in such a wretched state, heād surely kill Arthur River on sight.
As she left the warehouse with Arthur River, and he tied her to a pillar outside, a black SUV pulled up from somewhere.
While Maya Spencer was fixated on the SUV, Arthur River got out of the car, untied her from the pillar, dragged her by the hair to the back of the vehicle, stashed her behind the rear seats, and blocked her with a partition board.
Before closing the car, he warned her not to make a fuss, or heād leave her dead on the outskirts.
Maya Spencer nodded vigorously to indicate she wouldnāt make trouble.
Shortly after the car door was locked, Maya Spencer felt the vehicle start moving, crammed into the confined trunk, curled up and feeling utterly uncomfortable.
Moreover, the road outside the warehouse was rough and difficult to traverse, her head and back were constantly being jolted; the bumpy ride not only made her body ache but also made her want to vomit, yet the tape over her mouth denied her the chance to breathe deeply.
