Maya Spencer, James Bennett, and Father Bennett were all taken aback, disbelieving that Sophia had brought Christopher Scott home for dinner. They were ready to comfort her, never expecting he actually showed up.However, Liam Spencer alone furrowed his brows, glaring at Christopher with disdain, seemingly mocking him for his lack of resolve. To be won over by Sophia like this was truly disappointing to him.
Soon, Mother Bennett approached with a radiant smile, greeting, "Christopher, youâre here! Come, come, come! Quickly come in and sit."
Christopher was embarrassed by Mother Bennettâs enthusiastic hospitality, feeling uncomfortable being treated like a prospective son-in-law but was too polite to refuse her hospitality.
"Mom, these are the cake and gifts brought by Christopher," Sophia, excitedly, handed over some of the gifts to her mother.
Among these gifts, aside from the cake which was indeed bought by Christopher, the restâbirdâs nests, tea, and skincare products for Mayaâwere all prepared by Sophia on her own.
For Christopher, this was simply a casual gathering, and he only attended as a friend; he wasnât Sophiaâs boyfriend, so there was no need to tailor gifts for everyoneâs needsâa cake was enough to show his goodwill.
Mother Bennett, looking at the items Sophia handed over, laughed heartily, saying, "Itâs good that youâre here, why buy so many things, and even bother you two to carry them over, which is quite tiring."
Christopher, hearing Mother Bennettâs polite words, gave Sophia a glance of indifference, then smiled and explained, "Auntie, youâve misunderstood; aside from the cake, the rest were bought by Sophia herself. I was just helping carry them from the car, itâs not tiring."
Christopher, though he accompanied Sophia, did not intend to go along with her plans, so he felt it necessary to clarify some things to avoid any misunderstandings by Sophiaâs parents.
Mother Bennett listened to Christopherâs candid explanation, finding it both amusing and exasperating, quickly agreeing, "Sophia just loves to joke around, indeed!"
With Christopherâs explanation, everyone understood that he was not here as Sophiaâs boyfriend, perhaps just a good friend or extending a courtesy to Liam.
On the sofa, Maya overheard Christopherâs straightforward explanation, sweating profusely, wondering what was going on between those twoâwere they together or not?
Liamâs lips curled into an indifferent smirk, thinking, he knew Christopher wasnât easy to win over; Sophia definitely wouldnât snare him so easily.
Liam also knew that Sophia, being easily distracted, shouldnât catch him too easily. Otherwise, given her speed of changing her mind, getting dumped by her would be embarrassingly awkward; if he was to be caught by her, she should truly appreciate him.
When they returned, it was exactly four oâclock, with a couple of hours before dinner. So, they cut the cake Christopher brought and began sampling it along with tea.
The men were discussing work-related topics, while the women were listening in nearby.
Seeing Maya lounging lazily in Liamâs arms, Sophia was quite envious, longing for such closeness. But every time she tried to approach Christopher, he would avoid her; later, Christopher even hid beside Maya, playing games on her tablet with her.
Beside them, Sophia pouted in anger at Christopherâs guardedness, staring at him intently.
At six-thirty, after dinner was finished, Christopher intended to leave, but Sophia clung to him, refusing to let him go, insisting he stay and continue playing.
With Maya and Sophiaâs insistence, Christopher had no choice but to stay and play mahjong with them.
Thus, the four of them gathered in the small sitting room of Sophiaâs bedroom to play mahjong.
As Sophia sat at the table, she alternated between looking around her room and at Christopher across from her, feeling incredibly happy.
Having pursued so many guys, Christopher was the first to be this close to her, making Sophia feel content.
She thought, if she could wake up to see Christopher every morning, how blissful would that be?
"Sophia, are you daft? Youâre playing a tile without picking it up, what are you trying to do?" Maya helplessly reminded the absent-minded Sophia.
Playing mahjong requires a good deal of focus; however, with Christopher sitting right across from Sophia, she appeared completely lovestruck, distracted from the game, discarding tiles irresponsibly. Maya found no joy in playing anymore, thinking the game pointless.
After two rounds, Liam pushed the tiles aside, saying dismissively, "Iâm done playing."
Playing against a lovestruck Sophia had Liam nearly losing his patience, feeling it was a waste of time, leaving him exhausted and eager to rest.
Maya saw Liam yawning repeatedly, then held his hand, asking, "Brother, are you tired? If youâre tired, take a break first."
When James was discharged today, Maya had promised to stay at his villa for a few days; if she stayed, Liam naturally accompanied her.
"Since brother is tired, you two have a rest, Iâll head home then." Christopher seized any chance he got to make his exit.
"Wait! Christopher, itâs not even 8 oâclock yet! Stay a bit longer; my mom wanted to play mahjong earlier but didnât want to interrupt us, Iâll call her to join in." Sophia was eager for Christopher to live there, refusing to let him go so soon.
With no other choice, Christopher stayed a bit longer, agreeing with Sophia that heâd leave by 9 oâclock.
As the rounds went on, Maya also found it boring and excused herself to check on Liam, making her escape.
Christopher felt delighted, thinking heâll finally be able to leave, able to escape Sophia.
However, as he put on his jacket preparing to leave, Sophia suddenly called him back, saying, "Christopher, I have a gift for you. Wait for me."
"Thereâs no need, keep it for yourself." Gifts from Sophia meant more trouble, as heâd just pass them to someone else. Itâs simpler not to accept them.
Sophia saw he was refusing her gift, quickly ran to the door, locked it, then spread her arms, blocking him, pouting unhappily, "If you donât accept my gift, I wonât let you leave."
Seeing Sophia being unreasonable, Christopher gritted his teeth in annoyance but couldnât lose his temper; this was, after all, her place, and the elders were around.
He took a deep breath, spoke angrily, "Alright, hurry up and fetch it."
Christopher was both angry and fatigued, eager to leave Jamesâs villa and get a good nightâs sleep.
Last night, he was restless worrying about todayâs dinner, resulting in a sleepless night. Thankfully, itâs nearing an end.
Sophia saw Christopher had compromised, quickly entered her bedroom, retrieved a gift bag from the wardrobe, returned to the sitting room, wearing a mischievous grin.
