After Sophia Bennett slowed down the car, she maintained a speed of about 60 km/h to drive home.Even though Sophia promised Christopher Scott that she would get home safely, Christopher still couldnât let her go home under such circumstances, so he followed her all the way to make sure she got home safely.
As Sophiaâs car drove into the driveway at the side entrance of the villa, Christopher followed her in.
Sophia, caught up in her amusement, did not notice that she was being followed by Christopher.
When she parked her car in front of the villa and opened the door to get out, she saw Christopher also stepping out of his car.
At the moment their eyes met, Sophia quickly hid the smile at the corner of her mouth, pretending to be calm and indifferent, she asked, "Why did you follow me?"
"I wasnât at ease," Christopher shrugged, indicating his helplessness.
Sophia listened to Christopherâs concern for her, and noticing his deep gaze, she became a bit shy. She tucked her short hair behind her ears with her right hand, smiled awkwardly, and said, "Iâm home now, you should head back!"
After saying this, she walked toward the steps of the villa, fearing that if she stayed, she might make a fool of herself by being overly nervous; so she decided to avoid Christopher and find some quiet to calm herself down.
Seeing Sophia trying to avoid him, Christopher immediately caught up, gently grabbed her wrist, and said warmly, "Sophia, there are too many misunderstandings between us; letâs talk."
Feeling Christopherâs warmth, Sophia quickly pulled her hand back, and hastily explained, "Well, I still have something to do, Iâll head home first, we can talk another day."
Sophia was acutely aware that whenever Christopher touched her, her heart rate would increase, her mind would become a whirl of heat, making normal communication impossible; she had to escape.
She didnât realize that if she had just leaned into Christopherâs arms and acted a bit spoiled, she could have easily won him over.
However, this silly girl only thought about running away, only about calming herself down.
Seeing her making excuses to evade him, Christopher again took her hand and pleaded, "Sophia, please donât avoid me, letâs have a proper talk, okay?"
Seeing this, Sophia struggled to free her hand and quietly explained, "Christopher, donât be ridiculous. Youâre just not used to me not chasing you for now, after some time youâll get accustomed to it, let go of me."
As for Christopherâs symptoms, Sophia couldnât find any other excuse except to think he was simply unaccustomed to being âabandonedâ by her.
Even if her guess was right, in the past she wouldnât have minded, as long as Christopher was willing to accept her, she wouldnât care whether or not he really liked her. Feelings can always be developed over time, after all!
But, after deciding to give up on Christopher, her mind became clearer than before. After Christopher expressed his feelings, she contemplated more, considering more seriously whether he truly loved her. At the same time, her desires grew stronger. She wanted not only Christopherâs presence but his heart as well.
Listening to Sophiaâs reassurance, Christopher frowned deeply. He could clearly sense that he wasnât holding onto Sophia simply out of habit, but out of affection.
If it were merely out of habit, since he hadnât contacted her or met her for dozens of days, he shouldâve gradually forgotten about her; but that was not the case. Instead of forgetting Sophia, his longing for her grew deeper.
Wherever Sophia wasnât present, no matter how fun the activity, it felt meaningless; whereas with Sophia around, even the most boring things felt fun, like tonightâs turtle drawing.
He liked to watch Sophia up close, liked when she obediently stayed in front of him; it wasnât just habit, it was affection.
Habits donât leave one so desolate; love does, it drains the soul, making one feel extremely lonely and lost.
At this moment, with Sophia standing in front of him, he felt as though he had the whole world and was not at all lonely.
He didnât agree with Sophiaâs opinion, nor did he wish to forget her; he wanted to hold her, to have her.
Therefore, he paid no heed to her struggles, pulling her into his embrace, whispering tenderly by her ear, "Itâs not a habit, itâs affection; Iâm an adult, I know the difference."
"Swish!" Instantly, Sophiaâs face turned redder than a cherry, nearly fainting from excitement.
Christopher actually confessed to her, saying his attempt to win her back wasnât out of habit, but because of affection, because of affection.
Sophiaâs emotions were on the verge of breaking down. Leaning into Christopherâs embrace, she almost burst out laughing, she was practically over the moon with joy, the happiest moment in her 24 years had indeed arrived.
Just as Sophia was about to burst into laughter, Mother Bennett suddenly appeared, frowning, and looking at the two tightly hugging each other, she asked in confusion, "Sophia, youâre home, why havenât you come inside?"
Sophia, hearing her motherâs voice, quickly pushed Christopher away, awkwardly explaining, "Christopher, Christopher said he was cold."
Hearing Sophiaâs explanation, Mother Bennett chuckled out loud.
She looked the pair over from head to toe and deliberately said, "Itâs only September and you two are already cold, what about winter?"
Hearing her motherâs teasing, Sophia immediately dashed inside the villa, still saying, "Mom, Iâm going inside first."
Christopher watched as Sophia fled in haste, placing his hands on his hips, shaking his head in resignation.
Though Sophia ran away, when he hugged her just now, she didnât push him away. Instead, her small hand even tugged at his clothing a bit, so it seemed Sophia enjoyed being close to him.
He thought, if Mother Bennett hadnât appeared and interrupted them, maybe Sophia wouldâve conceded to him.
However, the future mother-in-lawâs timely appearance spoiled his moment, and he dared not protest, only managed to force a smile and greeted, "Hello, Auntie."
Mother Bennett, observing Christopherâs politeness, recalling how he held Sophia just now, couldnât hide her smile, warmly said, "What are you standing outside for, come in and sit!"
Though Mother Bennett wasnât happy it took Christopher this long to notice her daughter, she was satisfied now that the two kids had finally come to fruition, and she held no grudges!
In the living room, when Mother Bennett led Christopher inside, she didnât see any trace of Sophia.
Hence, she pulled aside a servant and asked, "Where is Miss? Have her come down to accompany her soon-to-be-fiancé." Mother Bennett was quite unabashed, already addressing him as a son-in-law.
Following behind, Christopher felt pure joy upon hearing Mother Bennettâs reference to him as soon-to-be-fiancĂ©, thinking to himself that with Mother Bennettâs approval, Sophia couldnât keep hiding from him!
"Madam, Miss just went upstairs as soon as she came in, Iâll go get her for you at once." The servant, also, dropped the âsoon-to-beâ from her response.
Upstairs in the bedroom, Sophia thought about being caught hugging Christopher and turned beet red, but the corner of her mouth still carried a trace of a smile as she recalled Christopherâs confession.
"Miss, Madam is calling you downstairs to accompany your fiancé." At this moment, a knock came at the door.
