Sophia suddenly stopped bothering Maya, and Maya felt out of place, sitting at her desk practicing calligraphy, with a sense that something was missing without anyone to disturb her.Throughout this year, while practicing calligraphy, Sophia would spend half the time sitting on the sofa chattering away with Maya about Christopher. Asking whether Christopherâs recent attitude towards her was better, and if he had glanced at her a few more times at the last party.
Maya thought of Sophia, took a deep breath, immediately put down her brush, grabbed the phone beside her, and dialed Sophiaâs number. After all, Sophia wasnât Christopher, so she didnât need to keep up appearances. If she missed Sophia, sheâd just call her over to hang out!
Over the course of this year and a half, Sophia not only developed a dependency on Christopher, but also made Maya dependent on her.
After the call connected, Sophia lazily asked, "Maya, whatâs up? Calling me so early in the morning."
"You troublemaker, not bothering me for days, Iâm not used to it. Hurry and come over to bug me," Maya said angrily.
"No can do, Iâve got plans today, Iâll bother you tomorrow."
"What plans do you have?" Upon hearing that Sophia had plans, Mayaâs alertness heightened, suspecting something good might be happening.
On the other end, Sophia said bashfully and giggling, "My mom set me up on a blind date today, I have to go check it out."
"A blind date? Things are moving pretty fast, huh? Already forgotten Christopher?"
"Whether I forgot him or not doesnât matter, it wonât lead to anything anyway. Canât chat now, I have to go out. If I fancy him, Iâll bring him for you to see."
"Alright, looking forward to your news!" Maya said and ended the call.
In her room, Sophia looked at the phone Maya had just hung up, pondering Mayaâs question about whether sheâd forgotten Christopher already.
Forget? Sophia wanted to forget, but how could she? Loving him for so long, loving him so deeply, how could it be so easy to forget? She feared sheâd never forget, not in this life.
"Sigh..." Thinking about it, Sophia let out a deep sigh, her expression filled with helplessness.
Then, she lamented miserably, "If I canât marry Christopher, does it matter whom I marry?"
With that, she stuffed her phone into her bag and headed out.
Meanwhile, Maya had barely placed the phone down on the table when it rang again. She glanced at it indifferently and her heart jolted.
Though sheâd only seen the phone number once, she remembered who it wasâLillian was calling her.
Maya took a deep breath, the brush in her hand stiffly hovering mid-air, frozen. She stared blankly at the phone screen, her mind in a fog, even forgetting to answer the call.
In that moment, she didnât know how to answer the call, she didnât know how to face Lillian, she worried what if Liam found out she had taken the call? What if he got angry?
So, she stood there stupidly, letting the ringtone reach its end without making a move.
Staring at the now silent phone, Maya couldnât help recalling the diary she wrote, the memories of seeing Lillian by the sea, and the words Lillian spoke to her at the airport.
Wasnât everything so distant, as if it happened in another life? Yet this sequence of numbers made it so close, like it happened yesterday, each scene so vivid.
Maya swallowed a mouthful of saliva, looking at the missed call notification on the screen, as if sheâd done something wrong, feeling guilty and afraid.
Now, thinking of her diary, recalling her misguided affection for Lillian, Maya felt she was letting Liam down; although, she hadnât done anything.
Moments later, the phone rang again with the same number.
This time, Maya snapped out from her shock, slowly grabbed the phone.
She knew avoiding was not a solution. If she didnât answer Lillianâs call, he would surely think irrationally, assuming Liam had her locked up without any freedom.
She didnât want Liam to be misunderstood, nor want their relationship to be misunderstood. They were in love, about to get married, and she willingly was marrying Liam, not being forced by anyone.
Maya took a deep breath, swiped to answer, cautiously asked, "Brother Morris, whatâs up?"
"Maya, do you have time? Letâs have lunch together," Lillian invited, having been back for over a week, already clear about Mayaâs situation.
Though heâd heard the news that Maya and Liam were deeply in love, Lillian didnât believe it. If Liam truly loved Maya and she loved him, he wouldnât be disrupting their life.
However, Mayaâs suicide two years ago haunted him relentlessly, as did her efforts to avoid Liam five years ago, even aborting their child; and Liam using Morris Clan Group to blackmail Mayaâall these led him to suspect that Maya was reluctantly staying by Liamâs side.
Though he liked Maya, he wouldnât force her like Liam did. During these two years, he had worked tirelessly to strengthen himself, waiting for this day, when he could confront Owen Clan Group, when he was not Mayaâs weak defense, to stand up to Liam and fight for Mayaâs freedom.
He knew, after two years, Mayaâs feelings for him might have faded, yet he couldnât abandon her to suffer for a lifetime.
Lillian felt there were too many missed opportunities with Maya, times he could have taken her away, escaped from the Spencer Family, the harsh life, yet he didnât, thinking he only sympathized rather than loved her.
Now, no matter what, he wouldnât let Maya stay by Liamâs side; as for her future choices, he wouldnât interfere.
In the study, listening to Lillianâs invitation, Mayaâs heart almost broke from fear. Even though she anticipated Lillian would ask to meet before taking the call, his direct invitation still left her anxious and conflicted, unsure how to respond appropriately.
"Maya, have you decided?" Lillian pressed again seeing Maya didnât speak for a while.
Maya furrowed her brows tightly, pondering. She knew, if she didnât meet Lillian and clear things up, heâd assume she wasnât well; moreover, she had recently heard Hudson verbalizing Lillian was contending with Liam, and she wanted to persuade Lillian against acting recklessly.
So, she nodded and responded, "Alright!"
Avoidance resolved nothing, she had to face it. She believed Liam would understand her and wouldnât misunderstand; her affection for him was genuine, without pretense.
"Okay! Where are you, Iâll pick you up," Lillian said.
"Brother Morris, send me the address, Iâll go myself," Maya replied calmly.
"Alright!" Lillian hung up and sent the address to Maya.
Around 10:30, Maya spoke with the servants and left for her meeting with Lillian.
However, arriving at the restaurant parking lot, as soon as Maya parked the car, even before getting out, Liamâs call came through.
